I didn't even nominate it, but The Mountain Goats album, Beat the Champ, is the best paean to late 70s early 80s wrestling ever! Also I used to have a recurring dream where John Darnielle and I were detectives investigating supernatural crimes like Mulder and Scully from X-Files, only it was more like Law & Order because we'd arrest a Yeti or whatever and then there was a trial.
The choice is clear...vote for Yetis behind bars...vote for The Mountain Goats' Beat the Champ!
Paid for by the Nocturnal Friends of John Darnielle...

Car Wheels was the best country album of the decade, and one of the very best of the decade in any genre. So while it appears unlikely to win, I strongly recommend it to anyone who hasn't heard it.

You have inspired me to vote for Beat the Champ. [cheesy thumbs-up, freeze-frame, cheerful "Foreign Object" intro plays]

Vote for FFS! That's the new collaborative album between Franz Ferdinand and Sparks, and what I've heard sounds great. You, you eighth and ninth people - use your second votes for FFS.

DID YOU KNOW?
Devo's "Whip It" began as a tongue-in-cheek anthem for 1980 presidential candidate Jimmy Carter. Let's celebrate his failed campaign with another as I encourage you to vote for Freedom of Choice!

John Carpenter. Music that sounds like his film scores. I gotta draw you a picture?
If not that, then FFS, ffs.

Deafheaven is the most essential album in this poll that is also the least listened to. It deserves your attention, not only for its lush and impeccably crafted soundscapes, but also for the juxtaposition of the vocals with the instrumentation. It is one of the most heartfelt, ambitious, and beautiful albums recorded in recent memory, with a backing of universal critical acclaim (excepting a 3-star review by Rolling Stone, who still ended up slotting it at #1 on their year-end list). I love Bowie too, but there's no better time for Sunbather than now.

[pisstake/]Unless you're in the Southern Hemisphere where it is winter, presuming your conclusion has to do with the season (where it is unseasonably hot in the PNW this go 'round the earth) [/pisstake]. But, not-so-pedantically, I voted for Deafheaven and Bowie. I've only listened to Deafheaven in pieces.

To be fair, I enjoy the album both in the dead of winter and the scorching heat of summer (fellow PNWers unite!). It's moody enough for the doldrums of December but still emphatic enough for the sweltering July heat. I've seen them at a small club in winter and they fucking crushed my soul, and then I saw them later at the Sasquatch! music festival in the sun and they lifted me up. They can do anything.

I listened to half and changed my vote. The Loud Thread devotees are going to have to rally to upset Bowie now.

I've tried sooooooo hard to get into Deafheaven. I feel like it's got to be me at this point. Most people whose opinion I respect in music love it. it has all the elements that usually turn me on. Why is it just not sinking in with me? Do I give Sunbather a 5th listen? A 6th? I even play it all the way through!! I feel like I'm missing something.

I ain't even mad, once I saw Bowie was nominated I knew it was gonna be an uphill battle. That we got within one vote impresses me. Thanks to everybody who tried to push Sunbather over the top!
If it was gonna be any Bowie album, I'm glad it's the one heavily influenced by krautrock.

I tried really hard to get into Sunbather. I really did. The fact that I could not get into this album made me feel really old. I kept thinking of that episode of South Park where Randy tried to get into the music the kids were into even though it sounded like a bunch of farts. I didn't want to be that guy, so I tried again.
And again.
And again.
I guess what I'm saying is hurray for Bowie.

Yeah, when I was about a quarter of the way in I thought, "This sounds like something I would be super into if I were 16 and a different person."
