Sigh, I clicked through it all and half of them sucked. Missing many true heavyweights (Blaine Capatch, Sydney Battle, Brooks Otterlake, Cullen Crawford...). To say nothing of Richard Dawkins getting as many placements as dril You (and our) Boy dril made the Washington Post. About time.

Shower curtain rings are now obsolete has to be one of the oddest conclusions from a standard "Count the ways a pre-internet & smart phone made movie set in its own time would no longer make sense if remade in the year 20XX" article. Half the comments appear to be people trying to puzzle out what the author possibly was thinking. I'd also add that even in 1987, expecting to get from Midtown Manhattan to any of the three airports within an hour of your flight during rush hour would have been unrealistic. We had to go to the three airports all the time in the 80's just to drop off or pick up either my grandfather or my older brothers and even going from the Bronx to LaGuardia well after rush hour we needed to allot way more time than that.

It is very odd. I have the same set of rings I bought 15 years ago, even though I've changed the shower curtain itself 3 times. I've needed them in all 5 places I've lived during that time.

Things still regularly done on the regular:
1. Checking watches (though yeah Martinâs Piaget is pretty out of style) 2. Paper tickets (Iâm surprised you see this so often too, but having recently traveled yes a lot of people still use them) 3. Getting a cab at the airport is pretty easy now in my experienceâdepending on the city getting Uber/Lyft might still be harder than the security line 4. I feel like getting assigned the wrong class seat was pretty common back then, thus the humor 5. Theyâre right about ânot finding a roomâ being unlikely but come on an AirBnB booking situation would be worse than the one here. This is starting to read like a list of millennial cliches than the informed analysis of a frequent traveler. 6. Overshooting Chicago by a hundred miles was improbable back then too, which is probably why the line was cut.
I have to admit that Iâm not a big PT&A guyâitâs a bit too schmaltzy for me. Thanksgiving movieâs an odd thing, like Thanksgiving song, it doesnât really work (sorry Gene Belcher). All I can think of are:
1. Broadway Danny Rose [disqualified] 2. Football game where the Packers lose 3. Bobâs Burgers Thanksgiving episode marathon 3. Miracle on 34th St. 4. Random good movie 5. Some other good early Christmas movie

Some other good early Christmas movie I still do paper tickets, since up until last week, my phone was over 3 years old and I wouldn't know if the battery would last through my first flight to the connecting flight, while I watched a movie. And the charging port didn't work, so even if the plane had a usb port, I couldn't charge my phone unless I used my wireless charger.

I felt a twinge of nostalgia today when I saw some comments by "Reformed Agouti Gerbil" in the Zoe SaldaĂąa article. I miss the old gimmick accounts, even some of the psychos. Not all, but some.

I went over for the first time in months solely to try to find their Top TV of 2022 list. Which is, of course, a slideshow. But, like.... every article is "Best Christmas Movies on [streaming service]". These are all slideshows. (I presume.)
I guess I should just be happy that they allow you to click to simply show the complete list. But yikes.

Just saw something about how there should be more restrospective articles about TV using an eleven year old TV Club Classic article as an example.

Man, at first I thought this Babylon review was written by one of TOC's twentysomething scabs, but apparently this is an established, widely (virtually) published film critic: Imagine writing the phrase "desert-like soils" and thinking "ah, yes, I am a writer. This is my craft."

I read that review and grew more and more incredulous as I read. What on earth? The first thing that grabbed my attention was when she described Chazell as "Among the most fiercely talented filmmakers working today" in the second paragraph.
Really?
Also, she lives in NYC. Remember when they fired everyone who wouldn't move to Los Angeles? Good times.
Edited to add: I also noticed that someone in the comments called her out on misusing the phrase "skin-deep" to mean something actually deep. She then edited the piece.

Steven Spielberg would like to profusely apologize to sharks for JawsSince the 1975 release of the film, research has since shown that Jawsâ bloodthirsty portrayal of the mammal (and major commercial success) had a hand in the population decline of sharks around the U.S.Why do I do this to myself, still mindlessly giving this garbage my clicks?

It seems that every month or so, The Old Country changes the behavior of its video ads just to annoy me. I regularly visit the "latest" page. Last month, videos on that page automatically played, with sound, even if they were not visible on the screen. That stopped after a couple of weeks. Maybe they got complaints. I've gotten into the habit of being ready to pause any video I see. Now, if I pause a video playing to the side of an article, it doesn't pause; it rewinds. For months, when reading the site on my phone, a video ad would appear in the middle of an article and cover half the screen while I was trying to read. The only way to get rid of it was to scroll quickly to the end of the article, then scroll back up to where I left off, hoping I didn't trigger the video again. Now the video has a clickable tab that will stop the video and anchor it to the page, so it doesn't follow you. Yay! But it also turns the ad into a bigger ad that covers at least two lines of text in the article. Argh!

Blatant spoilers in a video HEADLINE on the main page (and an active TWEET to their followers) right under an article that says 'hey maybe don't read this if you haven't watched the episode' less than 24 hours after an episode that aired on a fairly major family holiday for a lot of people where many people are doing family dinners and not watching prestige TV.
I'm not even a Succession watcher and this finally made me stop following them on twtitter.

What's annoying is they ripped off at least two other outlets with their fake serious obituary bit so they weren't even being original with their spoiler assholery. I'm hardly a spoiler hardliner either--complaining that someone spoiled a trailer for you? fuck off--but it's common courtesy to at least avoid including spoilers in headlines for at least a couple of weeks.

There's an article up saying Richard Madden really wants us to think he's playing Bond, with them mystified as to why Stanley Tucci is there. The blindingly obvious interpretation, at least to me, is that they're making another Kingsman film (a series Tucci is part of) with Madden as a fake Bond in it, but maybe that's just me.

It's so depressing to see an article like this one and being happily surprised by the vitality of the comments, maybe even given a moment of hope, only to notice that is actually a reprint from 2008. Why must you torture us AVC?

One of the Barsanti-dunkers is named âThe Cat from Sans SoleilââI donât remember the name but I hope they were around in the golden age because itâs just too good a name.
Coincidentially Iâve been reading some of Tashaâs old Book vs. Film columns from around the same vintage of @flyoddbarberâs inventory and I was actually surprised there were commentsâI forgot how late I was to actually commenting and how long I stuck to the âdonât scroll downâ rule I used on other websites.

I don't know why I still go back to the J/O media sites -- habit, I guess, and The Onion is OK -- but over at TOC, I read two articles, and they were both terrible in the same "the author thinks they're way cooler than you but they're really not" fashion, and they were both by the same dude, so I guess Matt Schimkowitz is TOC's newest* shitty author, though I haven't seen him go into the comments to defend his terrible takes like Jesse Hassenger yet.
Yet.
* Maybe he's been there a while, I neither know nor care
