Early to start this thread, but after reading this great NYT interview with Trevor Noah, I had to share. He seems like a really cool guy, he's dramatically upped the diversity of the staff, he's going to do more international news coverage, and if you're still worried about his old tweets, he opens up/owns up about those tweets.

Ron Howard Voice I'm honestly quite excited, he seems charming and I think the international news spin could give the show more of a Last Week Tonight feel (if not obviously as routinely in-depth as Oliver's comedy journalism.) I guess we'll see.

More international coverage is definitely something that I wanted from the "old" Daily Show (easy as it is to lampoon US politics), so color me excited!

That interview has me way more optimistic than I was before I read it.

That was OK, though unsurprisingly similar to the regular format. The only difference was the new correspondent who didn't do the usual bit.
I like Jon Stewart a lot, now I hope the show never mentions him again. Lionizing anyone that much just gets old.

To repeat a joke I tweeted Spielbergo an hour ago...
Trevor? I don't even Noah!

I liked it more than I expected, having not been a fan of Noah's few appearances before the announcement. This had a good energy about it, and plenty of room to grow as he gets comfortable. Some of the jokes were kind of lame. Hacky.

I liked Trevor Noah's earlier appearances on the show better than this - thinking mostly of his first appearance where he deadpanned about his South African friends telling him not to go to New York because of all the ebola. And yeah, some jokes definitely did not land.
But overall I liked it, especially the Jordan Klepper bit.

It'll get there. Give it a few weeks/months, probably.
He does have a harder time landing some of the punchlines without grinning like crazy.

I think Jon had more difficulty maintaining his deadpan as time went on. It's like he lent it to Colbert for "TCR" and Colbert never gave it back. I, like DRC, thought he did a pretty damn good job for the first night.

I watched the first 15 minutes or so - I was neither horribly disappointed nor overly impressed. He was comfortable in front of the camera, some of the jokes were fine but some were lame. I didn't see what I later heard was the best part, with the new correspondent, but I'll probably keep watching on nights I feel like staying up for it.

Good correspondent piece with Klepper and Wood Jr. last night. Sure, it reeked a little of trying to recapture the magic of those Oliver/Wilmore joints back in the day, but accepting that we'll never get that, I liked this for what it was.
Interestingly, our evening routine has returned to The Daily Show followed by Colbert, even though both of those things are now pretty different. We only watch through the 2nd segment on Colbert most nights. I could care less about the interviews.

Jordan Kleppper's been doing this sort of thing for a while now, at that - he was quite good with Michael Che for the five minutes Michael Che was a correspondent, and he also did a bit with Jessica Williams (speaking of, my understanding is she is still a correspondent, so hoping she shows up soon - thus far the old correspondents sticking around have been Klepper, Minhaj and Madrigal.) I don't really have a routine anymore. It's Daily Show/Nightly Show before or after Colbert now, and how I order it depends on how the day's going.

His smile bugs me for some reason. He has a shit-eating grin, and the way his ears stick out kind of elfin-like add to the effect. It doesn't bug me, but I can see why it would bug others.

I don't really have a routine anymore. It's Daily Show/Nightly Show before or after Colbert now, and how I order it depends on how the day's going. I noticed I felt a certain hesitance about both TDS and Colbert returning to TV, and it took me a moment to realize this was because I would feel somewhat stuck watching them every night (because I do want to), while we were able to get a lot of other TV watching done those months they were gone. Like finishing up Defiance, for instance. I also realize that this is very #firstworldproblem and a complaint entirely of my own making.

LazBro I do feel like on some extent I'm watching all three of these shows more out of obligation than enjoyment - and I consistently enjoyed the Stewart/Colbert two-fer of 2014 and years prior to that. Last Week Tonight is the exception here - it already completely won me over last year. And I do get the desire to watch other stuff too - especially with October and a whole new slate of programming I want to dig into (or catch up with.)

Once there was a time when if I couldn't stay up I would actually go back and watch both TDS and Colbert online the next day, minus the interviews of course, but that was over five years ago. I'm not doing that for anything derived from that brand now except Last Week Tonight.

Nice to see Maddow back on the show, although it was apparently because she has a Thing coming up (moderating a candidate forum); Jon Stewart sometimes had her on just because she'd be a good guest to discuss Recent Events with (like after Osama bin Laden was killed.) Still, was good.
Also: Knew it'd be Kasich.

Douay-Rheims-Challoner, have you heard about some recent controversy about a racism monologue Trevor Noah did that some say is quite similar to an old one from Dave Chappelle?

The Prighlofone I had not, although reading over the two monologues subsequent to your comment I can see how they were similar.

Ok, I feel like I gave it a good long trial, I'm thinking I might bail though.
First, as I've said before, he inspires the occasional chuckle, but has not done much to illicit a belly laugh out of me these last few months.
Secondly, he laughs at his own jokes, A LOT. Stewart would bust up occasionally but usually it was at something so ridiculous that you couldn't help but laugh along with him. Noah seems like he laughs every other joke and some of them aren't all that funny (see previous complaint)
Third, he does a really annoying voice, usually when he is taking on the persona of a really young person, though it also seems interchangeable with "nerdy white guy" that drives me up the wall.
Finally he just seems to be operating on a pretty shallow level. A recent story was about the Facebook emoji changes for example. Then he does an Apple vs FBI piece and the best he could do was to compare rash national security decisions with eating street food when drunk and how it leads to diarrhea. Har har!
I was excited about a young voice, the diverse cast, etc, but Mark Twain he is not. I haven't quite given up, its perfectly fine treadmill viewing. But lately I've started to find myself hitting fast forward more often and chuckling less. I can appreciate he may take time to get his legs underneath him, but I may have to come back to him at some future date.

To this I'd like to add one more thing that was extremely unfunny which I forgot to mention in my above post. In the FBI/Apple story he made a joke that you didn't need some super hacker to break the phone's code, just give it to the guy's girlfriend. He then mimicked the gf looking at the phone, cracking the code, and asking "Now, who is this Cindy?" First off, not all that funny. Even less so when you recall "the guy's girlfriend" is dead after helping to kill innocent people in the shooting spree. Kinda takes the funny out of it don't you think?
