40 years ago, on the week ending Nov 6, "Africa" moved up to number 61 on the Top 100. That week, after only one week at the top, "Who Can it Be Now" fell to number 2, and was replaced at number 1 by the duet "Up Where We Belong" by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes from the movie "An Officer and a Gentlemen". Both songs which entered the top 100 ahead of "Africa" remained ahead, with Supertramp's "It's Raining Again" moving up to 29, and "Dirty Laundry" moving up to 55. One new entry, the Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney duet "The Girl is Mine" entered the charts above "Africa" (and "Dirty Laundry") at 45.

Meanwhile, on the UK Singles Chart for the week of 31 October - 6 November, 1982, Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" spent it's third week at #1. This was its eighth week on the charts. Here's a fun fact about the song "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" that you may not know. In 2005, a cover of the song by the German group Blue Lagoon was a hit in several European countries. I don't know much about Blue Lagoon, but they do have their very own German Wikipedia page which you can read yourself, provided you are literate and understand modern German. Pretty interesting, right? But at this point, I'm sure you're all audibly speaking out loud to your laptop, or desktop computer, or e-reader, or tablet, or smartphone, or iPod Touch, or Zune device, saying "This is all well and good, rando, I'm genuinely appreciative of these good Culture Club facts; they are surely enriching my life. But what of 'Africa'? Where was Toto's 'Africa' on the UK Singles Chart for the week of 31 October - 6 November, 1982?" To which hypothetical but soon to be actual queries I have audibly replied, speaking aloud the following words to my laptop: "All in good time, people. Have patience, and soon I will tell you what position on the UK Singles Chart 'Africa' by Toto held for the week of 31 October - 6 November, 1982. The answer is, the song had yet to chart. Yet another week where the pop culture phenomenon that is Toto's 'Africa' had not graced the UK Singles Chart."

I do understand music theory, but I didn't find much of that to be all that interesting. I kept reading this going, "Elton John was doing this a decade prior", and then near the end, the article mentions that this is similar to what Elton John did.
There are plenty of pop songwriters who use mode mixing and chord inversions to make catchy songs.
And it is hard to take this over-the-top praise of the harmony writing for the backing vocals when Brian Wilson is a person who exists. (Not to mention the entirety of classical music.)
I don't know, Stereogum. I don't find this a compelling argument. The dude just used music writing tools that many other people have used to make a catchy song.
Of course, I don't like this song, so there is probably nothing that could convince me that it is good. #1 on the chart doesn't mean anything to me. There've been a LOT of terrible songs that hit #1.

40 years ago, on the week ending November 13th, "Africa" moved up to number 50 on the charts. "Up Where We Belong" remained at number one for that week. "It's Raining Again", "Dirty Laundry", and "The Girl is Mine" all remained ahead of "Africa" at 25, 32, and 36, respectively. No new songs entered above "Africa" this week, with the top new entry being Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's "You Got Lucky" at 58.

It seems, like Blue's Traveler's 'The Hook' technically good, which we all know is the best kind of good. But you might be in a good position to answer this - as a 'non-singer', Africa is fun to sing along with - it kinda 'bounces' up and down a bit, and there's some quick, tongue-twistery bits before you hit those longer sustained choruses. Is it fun to sing, as a professional singer?

Sure. It has very simple voice leading, there are no unusual intervals. Uses some notably sing-songy intervals. (3rds) It's easy to sing. Has the modulation going into the chorus. I mean, it is catchy.
That whole music theory article was just a long-winded way of saying, "This dude used music writing tools to make the song catchy!"

40 years ago, on the week ending Nov 20, 1982, "Africa" entered the top 40 for the first time, at number 37. "Up Where We Belonged" remained at number 1. "It's Raining Again" moved up to 22, "The Girl is Mine" to 14, and "Dirty Laundry" to 13. I had no idea that "Dirty Laundry" was such a big hit. The top new song that week was "I Do" by the J. Geils Band. I don't remember this song at all, and I owned a J. Geils Band Greatest Hits cassette tape at one point in my life.

40 years ago, on the week ending Nov 27, 1982, "Africa" moved up to 33 on the Billboard charts. "Truly" by Lionel Richie replaced "Up Where We Belong" as the number one song, as the Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes duet fell to number four after two weeks at the top. Speaking of duets, "The Girl is Mine" by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, jumped to number nine, while "Dirty Laundry" rose to 11, and "It's Raining Again" rose to 14. The top new song that week was "Heart to Heart" by Kenny Loggins, which entered the charts at 59.

40 years ago, on the week ending Dec 4, 1982, "Africa" moved up to number 27 on the charts. "Truly" remained at number 1. In fact, the top 5 songs all had one word titles. Number Two was Laura Brannigan's "Gloria", three was Toni Basil's "Mickey", four was "Maneater" by Hall & Oates, and five was "Heartlight" by Neil Diamond, a song which itself would be a good subject for a different Hatesong thread. (If it wasn't for "Gloria", I'd have to wonder if that was among the worst set of top 5 songs of all time, but "Gloria" is a certified banger, and I can appreciate the nostalgia for "Mickey", even if the song itself is not that good). "The Girl is Mine" rose to number 8, "Dirty Laundry" to number 9, and "It's Raining Again" to number 13. The top new song that week was "Bad Boy" by Ray Parker Jr., yet another song that I do not remember at all (other than Ghostbusters, I wouldn't be able to name any of his songs). Also, I did not realize this last week, but Men at Work's "Down Under", which entered the charts the week after "Africa" did, leapt over "Africa" the week of Nov 27th, to place at 31, and for the week of Dec 4th, was number 19. Let the battle of the songs about continents begin.

I'm angry that I'm made to remember that Dirty Laundry exists. Not enough to write a Hatesong about it, but yo, fuck Don Henley.

40 years ago, for the week ending December 18, 1982, "Africa" rose to number 16 on the Billboard Top 100. At the top of the chart that week, "Maneater" by Hall ft. Oates replaced Toni Basil's "Mickey", which fell to number 2. "The Girl is Mine" rose to number 4, while both "Dirty Laundry" and "It's Raining Again" lost momentum and remained at 7 and 11, respectively. Meanwhile, in the battle of the continents, "Down Under" remained ahead at number 12. The top new song that week was "Shame on the Moon" by Bob Seger ft. The Silver Bullet Band at number 40.

The top new song that week was "Shame on the Moon" by Bob Seger ft. The Silver Bullet Band at number 40. Shame on the Moon is pretty solid, and outside of early covers, one of his few hits that were written by someone else (Rodney Crowell - who had also produced Seven Year Ache for his then wife, Rosanne Cash the year before). ETA - I guess this is technically a cover as well, since Crowell released a version the in '81. Seger has a better voice for it though.

40 years ago, on the week ending Dec 25, 1982, "Africa" moved up to number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "The Girl is Mine" rose to number 3, and "Dirty Laundry" to number 4! (Again, I had no idea that "Dirty Laundry" was a top 10 hit, much less top 5. I remember ever hearing it until years later on "classic rock" radio). "It's Raining Again" held at number 11, while "Down Under" past it, and rose to number 8. The top new song that week was the Stray Cat's "Stray Cat Strut" at number 43, while at the top of the charts, Hall and Oates "Maneater" held on for its second week at number 1.

Does Billboard take the week off between Christmas and New Years? For the week ending Jan 1, 1983, every song remained in their exact position as from Dec 25, 1982. "Maneater" is still at number 1. No songs changed position in the whole Top 100, including "Africa", which remained at 14, and of course, no new songs entered the charts. What the hell?

40 years ago, on the week ending Jan 8, 1983, "Africa" moved up to number 12 on the Billboard Top 100. For the first time, it ranked higher than Supertramp's "It's Raining Again", which fell to number 19. "Maneater" remained at number 1 for the fourth week in a row. "The Girl is Mine" rose to number 2, and "Dirty Laundry" to number 3! In the battle of the continents, "Down Under" rose to number 4. The top new song that week was Chaka Khan's "Got to Be There" which entered the charts at 82.

40 years ago, for the week ending January 15, 1983, "Africa" entered the top 10 for the first time, moving up to number 7, just behind Toni Basil's former number 1, "Mickey". In the battle of the continents, Men at Work's "Down Under" took the top spot on the charts that week, while the previous weeks' number 1, "Maneater" fell to number 4. "The Girl is Mine" and "Dirty Laundry" were between the two, at number 2 and 3 respectively. Supertramp's "It's Raining Again" plummeted to 52, 3 spots behind this week's top new entry "You Are" by Lionel Richie.

40 years ago, for the week ending Jan 22, 1983, "Africa" moved up to number 5 on the Billboard Top 100. It's continental counterpart, "Down Under", remained at number 1. In between, in descending order, were "The Girl is Mine", "Dirty Laundry", and Marvin Gaye's last hit song "Sexual Healing". "It's Raining Again" fell all the way to 83, although I have to wonder if there was some confusion at radio station request lines as "It's Raining Men" entered the charts at 88 that week. Easy to confuse the two title over the telephone. The top new song that week was Christopher Cross' "All Right" at 29, which entered ahead of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" at 47. That's something that Cross can no doubt include in his list of top 10 accomplishments.
