40 years ago, on the week ending March 5, 1983, "Africa" continued it's slow descent down to charts and fell to number 27. Men at Work's "Down Under" fell slightly slower to 14. After 2 weeks at number 1, the Patti Austin-James Ingram duet "Baby, Come to Me" fell to number 6, replaced in the top spot by Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean". "Dirty Laundry" managed to stay on the charts, but fell to number 91. The top new song that week was the Psychedelic Furs' "Love My Way" at 73.

I vote we just end it here, with the superb "Billie Jean" at the top of the charts.

We have to wait at least a month for Come On Eileen to take the crown.
ETA: Looking at all these old charts makes me wonder what week had the most Top 40 songs that inspired Weird Al parodies?

40 years ago, on the week ending March 12, 1983, “Africa” plummeted to number 69 on the top 100. Which, nice. But also 2 places behind another Toto song, “I Won’t Hold You Back”, which was the second highest new song for the week, just 2 spots below Kenny Loggins’ “Welcome to Heartlight”. MJ’s “Billie Jean” remained at number 1 for the second consecutive week, and “Down Under” continued to dominate the battle of continents by only falling to number 15, 54 places ahead of “Africa”. It’s like much of the US woke up this week and thought “wait, why the hell is ‘Africa’ so popular? There’s much better songs out there.”

40 years ago, on the week ending March 19, 1983, "Africa" continued it's fall down the charts, landing at number 93. "Billie Jean" remained at the top for the third consecutive week. In the battle of the continents, Men at Work's "Down Under" also continued to drop, although not nearly as fast, landing at number 22. Toto's other song, "I Won't Hold You Back", rose to 51 this week. The top new song was Laura Brannigan's "Solitaire" at 65.

Somehow, I'd never heard this until yesterday and thought it was new.
Do you hate it more or less than Wheezer's lifeless cover?

In fact the song Africa by Toto is bad, and the thread isn't wasted because I hate this song and this is a thread for songs that people hate. Thus is qualifies.
I was actually at a comedy gig on Wednesday and they played the bad song Africa by Toto before the gig started. I was THIS close to just walking out. It's actually the first time I've heard it in a good few years and it confirmed to me everything I think of it - it's fucking terrible. Sorry, y'all.

40 years ago, on the week ending March 26, 1983, Prole Hole's nightmare ended, and Toto's "Africa" fell out of the top 100 completely. Their newer song, "I Won't Hold You Back" rose to number 35, still 11 behind Men at Work's "Down Under", which demonstrated in the battle of the continents, Australia had way more staying power. In the meantime, Desert Dweller gets her wish, and this ends with "Billie Jean" as the number one song. The top new song that week was David Bowie's "Let's Dance".

So, since last time I rapped at you guys on this thread, the garbage disposal broke down and I'm straight throwing stuff out. It's definitely made it heavier to get to the curb with some interactions with neighbors I didn't want but are cool, y'know? They're a bit weird about things but not trying to make it the worst, if you're not going along, and we're good on this thread. You're cool, guys on this thread?

Nice! Yay for "Billie Jean". Also, we traded "Africa" for "Let's Dance" and that is a major upgrade.

I most definitely agree with this article's assertion that "Africa" "was a critical and a mainstream success all around the world and today it is fondly remembered as one of the best bangers of the entire 80s."

I like the fact that it’s a love song to a continent none of them had been to Whereas some of us might suggest that's what's wrong with the terrible song Africa by the terrible band Toto in the first place.
