Because sports, Christmas has arrived far far too early for us but just in time for the Belchers in this, episode five of season six, "Nice-Capades"! The Belcher kids have crossed a mall Santa, of course not the real Santa but one that can report badness back to the Santa Santa, can they save themselves from a Christmas of coal?
Oh Louise! Out of everyone, even Bob, Louise is the most realised in terms of who she is and is a genuinely complex character in a way both Linda and Tina come close to being. They’re good but not like Louise who has something special there, a certain something that allows her to be who she is. Possibly it’s her fearless outspokenness that allows her the right to wear the bunny ears because they communicate something about her character that her personality alone doesn’t. I think they represent that for all her hard-nosed cynicism and drive to win she’s as soft as any of the Belchers if not the actual beating heart of them, that is what makes her more than a self-interested gladhand artist after all, the ears are her compassion and love and that mall Santa at least saw that she is perfectly suited to lead be that the family, Wagstaff or beyond that even.
Anyway, this was an actual honest-to-goodness good Christmas episode! Usually they’re kinda meh affairs but this one did allow for so much in the way of guest characters but the core of course was a Belcher kid adventure mostly driven by Louise and not wanting to end up on the naughty list. It all plays out well and given the last two seasons have had absolutely god-awful Christmas episodes, this one did its best, showing off almost everyone in a great light especially Louise who as usual is fantastically written when she shows that she still has the desires of a kid and they got to do a family story without being too preachy, now if only we could do something about Gene, still one dimensional after all these years and more’s the pity.

A+ | Unexpected for a Christmas episode but it really did knock it out of the park which is pretty good for a show that ran through three holidays in the space of a month. Fischoeders as usual were fantastic, Linda got to sing and I think for as great as Linda episodes are, Louise episodes do wonderful things when they explore who Louise is and the mask she puts on to the outside world. Easily a classic and far better than last year's cold offerings. |
