Hey everyone! Oscar nominations are out! For the most part, they aren't that horrible (except Carol missed out on best picture and best director, every actor is white, my least favorite film of the bunch, The Revenant, seems poised to win it all...). Last year, I held a pseudo AVC/TIF poll to determine the best film performances of the year. It involved sending me PMs of your five favorite performances, and then once again voting on the nominated performances. Participation was pretty good (but not as good as it could have been). If people enjoyed that process, I would be happy to do it all over again (it's pretty much no work at all). If not, feel free to just talk about your favorite performances in this thread. Either way, I'm happy (that last sentence is a lie because I'm a graduate student and all graduate students are dead inside). I just enjoy these sorts of discussions!
My favorites: -Cate Blanchet & Rooney Mara in Carol -Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road -Saoirse Ronan in Brooklyn -Brie Larson in Room -Alicia Vikander in Ex Machina -Maya Taylor in Tangerine -Kristen Stewart in The Clouds of Sils Maria (I wasn't intentionally excluding men, the ladies just killed it this year).

I actually just finished making a list!
HONORABLE MENTIONS (there are a lot): Sylvester Stallone/Michael B. Jordan (Creed), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), David Thewlis/Tom Noonan/Jennifer Jason Leigh (Anomalisa), Steve Carell (The Big Short), Michael Shannon (99 Homes), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Emily Blunt (Sicario), Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Matt Damon (The Martian), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl), Not Eddie Redmayne, Carey Mulligan (Suffragette), Joel Edgerton (The Gift), Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Kitana Rodriguez/Mya Taylor (Tangerine), Marion Cotillard/Michael Fassbender (Macbeth), Rest of the Spotlight cast, Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), Paul Dano (Love and Mercy), Elisabeth Moss/Katherine Waterston (Queen of Earth), Juliette Binoche/Kristen Stewart (Clouds of Sils Maria), Bel Powley (Diary of a Teenage Girl), Jack O’Connell (’71), Greta Gerwig (Mistress America), Geza Rohrig (Son of Saul), Tom Hardy (Mad Max)
Paired some up so as to get more in the top 15. Why didn't I just make a top 20? I don't know.
15. Michael Fassbender, “Steve Jobs” or Saoirse Ronan, "Brooklyn", or Benicio del Toro, "Sicario", or Sam L. Jackson, "The Hateful Eight". Depends on the day. 14. Mark Ruffalo, "Spotlight" 13. Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, “The Revenant” 12. Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay, “45 Years” 11. Charlize Theron, "Mad Max: Fury Road" 10. Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett, “Carol” 9. While The Hateful Eight wasn't my favorite, Walton Goggins and Jennifer Jason Leigh rocked their parts (and I'm pretending Leigh's Oscar nomination is retribution for egregious snub for Georgia) I plan on seeing 45 Years this week, but regardless I'm SO happy Charlotte Rampling snuck her way into those Oscar nominations.

Oscar Isaac, Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson - Ex Machina. Oscar is the best of the trio, but they were all just fantastic. A shame I don't actually like the movie.
Charlize Theron - Mad Max
Michael Fassbender - Steve Jobs
The Hateful Eight - The Hateful Eight. All eight of them were that good and each had a moment to shine.
Joesph Gordon Levitt - The Walk. Most people will skip right over this film and it is a shame. Yes, the accent is a too much, but once you get into the film it doesn't matter anymore. JGL is able to pull you in and pulls off a great performance that is full of sincerity and quite a bit of insanity.
Emily Blunt and Benecio Del Toro - Sicario.
Rebecca Hall - The Gift.

Wait, so who were the Hateful Eight? Because there were well over a dozen characters, and I don't think that any eight of them could be considered the objectively most important ones.

The best performance of 2015 was definitely BB-8.

The big contenders have already been covered, but I'd like to add Jessica Chastain in Crimson Peak, Rachel Weisz in The Lobster (not a very flashy performance, but a subtle one, she is very good at that), Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes (the movie was not that good, but worth seeing for his performance). I also loved the comedy ensemble in Man from UNCLE. Yeah, the movie was superfluous fun, but without the hilarious performances of the 3 leads, it wouldn't have been even that.

I hope you love 45 Years. Rampling is exquisite in it. And while JJL definitely should have been nominated for Georgia, I thought her work in The Hateful Eight was terrific enough to merit its own nomination. It didn't feel like a career nod for me (although the fact this is her first is flabbergasting). I do hope she or Mara win.

I just want to pretend it's not her first nomination. Part of me wants her to win over Mara because Mara should be in the lead actress category. Still, I'll be rooting for Mara because she is so good in Carol.

Beatrix Kiddo 9000, I'd like to play, as I did last year, unfortunately I have not seen all that many movies from 2015 as of yet (I'd say it's probably around 10-12, several of them being documentaries.) So if you forgive the fact that my own list is heavily actors rather than actresses, I hope you accept my ballot - it is not intentional sexism as much as it is me having seen more movies where men play starring roles this last year. I promise I will try to see all those that look interesting, which is a sizable number, as soon as I can. Michael Fassbender, "Steve Jobs" Jason Segel, "The End of the Tour" Seth Rogen, "Steve Jobs" Leonardo DiCaprio, "The Revenant" Kate Winslet, "Steve Jobs" Paul Giamatti, "Straight Outta Compton" Alicia Vikander, "Ex Machina" Matt Damon, "The Martian" Steve Carell, "The Big Short" (And I'll also add the voice work in "Inside Out" if it counts.)

Beatrix Kiddo 9000: I'd love to do the voting again, but I need to fit in more 2015 films first. I did just add an important one to my watched list last night, though. Carol was so great.

For me: Paul dano in love and mercy charlotte rampling in 45 years fassbender in steve jobs will poulter in revenant adelle haenel in les combattants (a freaking delightful movie if you can get past its stupid english title)
Special mention: Arianne labed as the maid in The Lobster (also while i was checking her out on imdb i saw shes gonna be in assassins creed and the main picture is strangely hilarious, its fassy doing his best Arrow pose)
E.T.A michael pena in antman made that movie for me so i'll include him. it may not be a great role but like everyone else on my list i was left feeling like i should go watch everything else he's in.
