After several months we re-join with the Belchers for this... Gayle episode. Buckle in, it’s going to be a long bumpy ride as we freeroll downhill with “The Cook, the Steve, the Gayle, & Her Lover” where Bob gets a new friend and Gayle finds romance with someone unexpected.
Gayle deserves happiness... there, I said it. She does but not because she’ll be happy, she needs it because she’d be institutionalised if she never got it and as down as I am on Gayle and the holy show she is, I wouldn’t want that of her. I do make comparisons between Tina and Gayle a lot mostly because I still see her as once being like Tina, very much in love with the concept of love rather than the actual practicalities of it. After years of false leads and bad dates though, the bloom has kinda gone though Gayle does still retain the concept of love completing her in some way in her heart and that to be swept away in a flurry of true love is still something that can happen to her.
The episode itself does make good though on that, Mr. Frond is about as good as a partner she could have with both being high-strung neurotics with a loose grasp on social normalcy and I think it works, it’s probably terrible for the Belchers to have that guy in their lives but it’s worth it to keep Gayle above water. Was it funny? Sure was, Bob’s complete infatuation with Steve, Teddy’s jealousy and subsequent defence of Bob to his new archaeologist friend was a nice delight, Louise’s song of basic Spanish hiding a tale of the dangers of love and guidance counsellors was also a great piece of work and H. Jon Benjamin taking his Jason of Home Movies voice out of storage is great. Of course, Bob’s Burgers runs mostly on heart and weirdness so this checks all the boxes you could hope to need when it comes to the show and of course welcome back Belchers... again!

B | Solid as you could hope for, sometimes I want the show to be more deeply cynical or mean-spirited but I think it’s better they keep with this affectionate heartfelt story thing they got going. |
