This is not a bit. This is a total glow-up.

I don't know why a doom band covering a song from Vitalogy makes sense to me, but it does

If this contained the electric piano jam at the end, I would consider it superior to the original in every way.

The original by Chris Isaak is amazing, but I really love this gothed-up version by HIM (whom I saw play their very first show in the United States, way back in the ancient year of 2005).

You don't know how happy it makes me to learn that there's another HIM fan on this forum! I always liked their Neil Diamond cover, too:

I have a poster I ripped off the wall of the Bowery Ballroom, which I got the band to sign just by not leaving after the concert was over. I had to look it up because I couldn't remember the venue - it was apparently 2004. And I was also wrong about it being their very first U.S. show; it was their first show in NYC, and Kill Hannah and Eighteen Visions opened. Somewhere in the archives of KH's website are photos of me with the lead singer, both of us in all of our elaborate emo-goth glory. (I legitimately can't recall who was wearing more eyeliner, him or me.) I saw HIM again at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C., in November 2005, but I don't recall who opened.

I never got to catch them live (one of my greatest live music regrets). They were great live! I was in college at the time, and my friends and I sneaked in little airplane bottles of booze that we downed in the ladies' bathroom when the doors finally opened (after we'd waited in line for a good two hours). I remember that we were very determined to meet the band afterward, so we just hung out and let some guy pay for the drinks we ordered once we realized the Bowery Ballroom did not give a single fuck about serving minors. Bam Margera and some of the lesser-known Jackass dudes were there as well - I'm not surprised to hear about his current drinking problems, because he was blackout drunk while everyone else was buzzed at best (including us, because we wanted to remember the night). He wasn't rude or gross or anything, but we were a little weirded out that he was so drunk by like 9 PM. One thing that still annoys me, though, is that Ville's girlfriend at the time stuck her damn head into our photo with the band. I'll have to find those photos. We took along a disposable camera and one of us scanned them at our college's computer lab, and I know I have the scans somewhere.

I kind of love how the only time Frank Zappa allowed himself to be sincere rather than arch was in his covers of the doo-wop songs he loved in his youth
The Mothers of Invention covering the Four Deuces' "White Port and Lemon Juice"

We don't have Unpopular Opinions for music, but. Here's a cover that has something meaningful to say besides "hippies suck".

This track is a perfect example of why I always wanted to like Disposable Heroes more than I could. It's catchy as hell but imagine still being angry about Pete Wilson's administration in 2021.

Fun fact/Unpopular opinion: This is the version of California Uber Alles I heard first and I STILL prefer it over the DKs

The original is a ten out of tenner but this is also a ten out of tenner while being a completely different take on it.

Not exactly "improve" but this is really impressive and fun: "Weird Al" Yankovic plays Sparks' "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us"

I love Flight of the Conchords, and Carol Brown is my favorite song of theirs, so it speaks volumes when I say that this cover is legit wonderful - even if he is an Aussie.

I love Ray Charles, but I've always thought the Ronettes' version blew his out of the water:

I have no appreciation for the original song, but acoustic Coheed makes everything sound good:

TMTLN does a lot of good covers but I can't stop listening to this one.

The one I can't stop thinking about is the cover of GnR's "Rocket Queen" where the "Axl banging the drummer's girlfriend sex sounds" are replaced with "Jordan Olds' attempting to pick up and drink a too-hot cup of coffee sounds". I haven't really gone back to re-listen to it but every time I hear the original I'm reminded what an improvement that is
