From March 3rd to March 6th, my town will be hosting the 13th annual True/False Documentary Film Festival, which features the foremost in new documentary films. I attended it last year where I was able to see The Look of Silence months ahead of public release, and HBO/Nick Broomfield's Tales of the Grim Sleeper, among others. This year, one of its big showcases will be Kate Plays Christine, the most recent film by my professor Robert Greene, which was previously featured at Sundance and then at the Berlin Film Fest this week. Some of its other films that take priority for me in trying to get to see include one about Norman Lear, one about Helmut Berger, Cameraperson, about documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson, Sonita, about the young aspiring Afghan rapper who's struggling against her social circumstances, and The Pearl, which follows four middle-aged, Pacific Northwestern transwomen in their lives. Here's the full list of films:

I lived in Columbia for 4 years, the latter two of which held the first T/Fs. I've been so happy to see the festival take off hugely, drawing national attention.

Fun fact: I live not far from where the Grim Sleeper killed people, and it's been said that he managed to kill so many people because locals were afraid to call the cops. I've been telling Minnie about Rampart, when Police were basically working for the Bloods while killing unarmed civilian literally for sport; and even now I'm afraid to call the LAPD. The LAPD is so famously horrible that native Angelenos I know take a kind of perverse pride in it.

I could have sworn that True/False started before I graduated, but apparently the first one was held a bit over a year after I did. I'm always happy to hear it's doing so well, and wish I could have been around for at least one or two of them.
