I had to go out today for my chiropractor's appointment and holy fucking hell, it was like having a wet, hot wool blanket thrown over my whole body the second I stepped out the door. It's 94 degrees here and we're not due for a thunderstorm until at least Saturday. Fuck this fucking sweatbox weather. But that reminds me: Shulkie, what's that chub rub powder you like so much? Lush's Silky Underwear dusting powder! I hear good things about BodyGlide, too.

Monistat's Chafing Relief Gel is also very good. (The active ingredient is dimethicone, so you can also use a basic makeup primer in a pinch.)

Yeap, just your average everyday snowstorm in July. Nothing to see here.

We're having a heatwave this week. It'll be our longest stretch of 90+ degree days since 2013. Friday, high of 97 with a heat index expected around 110. OOF.

And here I was about to post about how the very very very teensiest first signs of tipping past the midpoint of summer are showing -- our dogwood has its first two or three red leaves, and our sugar gum tree is dropping the odd yellow one. They're our bellweathers, so they always go first, but still. (We've had a scorching summer, with no sign of abatement. It's not like I think fall is on the verge. Just saying that the first few indicators that it will be happening again this year are clearing their throats, is all.)

Last night we had a thunderstorm that knocked out our power for several hours, which meant I used my phone as a wake-up alarm rather than my usual clock radio. I was pretty surprised when it hit, because we weren't supposed to get anything at all. I was mostly just happy nothing happened to my car, because I have it parked under a tree.

It's supposed to be 98 and 97 this weekend, and in the mid to high 90s for the foreseeable future. I can't stand it. You walk out of the building and just get hit in the face with the heat and the humidity. It's killing me!

Hit 113 today. Supposed to be 115 tomorrow. I just spent several minutes on my electric company's website trying to calculate which would be cheaper: Staying home all day tomorrow and running the AC, or hitting a couple of movies at matinee prices.
I think running the AC is cheaper. But, the movie theatre will be colder....

It's not even Fire Season yet! It's supposed to still be Riot Season!
Granted, we haven't had a riot in 24 years. Thanks, Global Warming.

I was looking at the Sand Fire pics on Twitter, including one of Santa Monica pier/beach, and TWBE accidentally invoked Everclear.

The Queen Anne's Lace is blooming all along the sides of the roads here! As sure a sign as any that we're in the tail end of summer. Going by the official calendar of stately Dick n Hisses Manor, the end of summer is actually only three weeks away. Then we enter the micro-season known as "Back To School", followed in two weeks by the next micro-season, "Baby Fall". I'm kind of sad to see it go this year, even though it's suddenly ridiculously hot out...

Well now a rain pattern has settled in and it's 60% chance of rain every day for the next 10 days. This is the Houston summer I remember.

Today's signs that we're in the back half of summer:
-- Bright yellow goldfinches have taken up in the garden to eat the seeds in the catnip. -- The basic, run-of-the-mill cicadas are out now (not the asshole raucous 17-year variety), so there's a constant soundtrack of steamy August in the background. -- I am planting carrots this weekend. (They rarely work out, but that never stops me.)

Today's sign of the impending end of summer:
The sycamore leaves are turning brown and starting to drop. I mean, yes, sycamores are totally lame trees that get their leaves long after everyone else and shed them long before everyone else, BUT STILL. My walk through the stand of sycamores at the edge of the parking lot this morning was positively autumnal (ignoring that it was 82 degrees already at 9 in the morning).

Since Vegas only has two seasons (not-hot and deathly hot) I tend to forget about the seasonality of products. I went to get a pool skimmer since the last one disintegrated, and not only was pool stuff gone, back-to-school stuff dominated the store with Halloween decoration boxes looming on the top of the storage shelves.
Which served to remind me of how depressing and out of place Christmas is around here.

You guys are out of the Sonoran desert, though, in Vegas, aren't you? Do you have saguaros?

You guys are out of the Sonoran desert, though, in Vegas, aren't you? Do you have saguaros? Only around the airport. I think the trend around the 80's to 90's was to plant them, but the really large ones are like large trees in that they're really old and have large root systems, and they're now protected (or the land is, IDK). But the big problem is that in the winter it will occasionally dip below freezing, and saguaros are temp sensitive. So come November the ones around the airport get wrapped up in blankets which makes me irrationally happy at the cuteness of it. Now there's other cactus that are frost or even freeze resistant (had plenty around my house in Utah), but they're small and not dramatic looking.

Have to march to and from schoolhouse on base in full ABU's in a Mississippi summer next to a beach which makes humidity worse. Yay!
There are mornings where we do pt at 0445, and it is already in the 80s and the sun isn't out.

I'm hoping this recent brutal heat wave will be our last, but I'm not holding my breath... I think it's usually cooler here (NC) in August, based on my admittedly limited experience. I absolutely cannot wait - this is the hottest summer I've lived through here.

They're designations we invented at stately Dick n Hisses Manor to make the interminable wait for Fall seem that much shorter. Mind over matter! If you can tell yourself that summer's over on August 15, because now it's "Back To School", then you're winning, right?

If we didn't have September, and the start of the Best Times, waiting at the other end of it, August would be the worst month of the year. All the cool summer stuff is over, the movies suck, you're just waiting for school to start and GET THE KIDS THE FUCK OUT OF THE HOUSE YOU'VE WATCHED TV FOR 9 HOURS TODAY
