We're expecting more wind tomorrow. Wind advisory is up warning of 50+ mph gusts. Looks like the worst of the wind and rain is supposed to hit right at 5pm-6pm as we're all leaving work. Yay.
Another couple days of sub-60 degree temperatures. Average for this time of year is around 75 degrees. There is not a single day in the 10-day forecast that gets up to 75. Continuing this trend of being cooler than average. I'm going to ask the NWS for the February data on Twitter, just like I did in January.
Gotta say, I had not expected several months in a row of cooler than average temperatures. I don't remember what November's numbers were, but it is possible we've had 4 straight months that turned out cooler than average, and now March is starting out looking cooler than average, too. This is very strange.
The rain and snow, however, is quite welcome.

Saw in the paper that La Niña is officially over. This was a cold and wet winter, so something went screwy here, and La Niña didn't act as it was supposed to.
Speaking of, we got about an inch of rain today. This is causing flooding problems all over the state. The northern part of the state was buried under snow due to a record-breaking snow season. But this storm is bringing only rain. So all that snow is melting and draining into the rivers.
The rivers were already at max, and the reservoirs were at 90% capacity. Just yesterday, the state's water board started releasing water from the reservoirs into normally dry riverbeds. This still caused flooding, but it was expected. The water flows into the normally dry riverbeds, and this helps replenish the aquifers. But there are roads that run over those dry riverbeds since, you know, they are normally dry.
Now we just dropped an inch of rain on top of this. It starts to flood at .5" so this is a major concern. There are already evacuations being conducted in the northern part of the state, where rain has caused rapid snow melt, and the rivers are rising.
When I drove home from rehearsal tonight, the freeways and surface streets were starting to flood.
So... the non-Colorado River part of the state's water management is looking great! We will have full reservoirs and have water left over to seep into the ground to replenish the aquifers. The state is no longer classified as being in drought conditions.
Hopefully we have rain over the Summer this year.

I saw the mountain snowpack in CA is at like 215% of its average and there's more snow coming.

The weather in the southwest and California has been absolutely bananas this year. I saw the mountain snowpack in CA is at like 215% of its average and there's more snow coming. It really is crazy. Flagstaff, AZ was approaching all-time snow records. I think it ended up #2 in the last 100 years? Back on March 1st, they said they had 140" of snow fall since the end of Summer 2022.
My best estimate of rainfall data for Phoenix says that from December 1, 2022 through today, Phoenix has had 4.81" of rain. This is a LOT. And not at all what anyone expected when meteorologists said it was going to be a La Niña winter. The only explanation I've seen about this from a climate scientist was "Well, the normal La Niña pattern moved further south." Okay, then.
And wow, it has been a LOT colder. As I said above, we've been below average high temps since October. March looks like it will also come in below average highs. It is 67 degrees today. Average is around 79.

It's pouring down rain and thundering. I'm very glad that this is supposed to stop before I have to go and let my friends' dog out this afternoon, because I don't want to drive in it and he's not going to want to go outside either.

Tuesday it was 80 and we had the windows open. Tonight it's going to be down to 35 and I built a fire.

The NWS confirmed on Twitter that it really was as cold here as I thought. Jan-March saw high temperatures nearly 10 degrees below average highs. The last time it was colder in Jan-March was 1979.
Going by high temperatures, it has been below normal highs here starting in October.
Going by overall average, we've been below normal starting in November.
And I love this - Tuesday, April 4th high = 64 degrees Forecast for Tuesday, April 11th = 99 degrees

After a very very dry June (and my town not getting rain that hit a lot of the area Thursday to Saturday) it has now been rising all.damn.day here. The front is just hovering over us.

Last winter we only got about 20" of snow all season. I'm kind of surprised it was that much - we got a lot of rain; parts north and south got more snow but our temps seemed to always be above freezing. Average is around 40 inches.
Anyway, we got about 2 inches Saturday and now are due for 5-8 more tomorrow. And possibly more next weekend. Let's see if this trend continues...
Update: We are also potentially looking at another 6-7 inches on Friday. Whee.

We have had snow and extreme cold for over a week now, but today it warmed up enough that we had freezing rain. There was some melt off, but now there are reports of random patches of black ice causing chaos on the roads. In icy conditions, just stay the fuck off the roads unless it's an absolute emergency. Ice, especially black ice, will happily kill you or fuck you up really bad. I know this from personal experience. Learn from my mistakes.
Don't risk it.

Yeah, we’re getting rain right now that will turn to ice overnight so that’s fun. I agree, avoid icy roads as much as possible.

We just had two solid days of rain. This dropped nearly one inch of rain on Phoenix. This is notable because last year we had a grand total of 4.4 inches. So, this was nearly a quarter of last year's rainfall.

It just rained for three solid days here in Maryland, and I'm currently enjoying a brief window of clear skies before more of the wet, cold bullshit rolls back in.

We got snow yesterday! It didn't really stick, but it was snowing and blowing for several hours yesterday morning. Ugh. At least it should be more springlike next week.
