We've had our typical seasonal rain over the last week.
Yesterday, it rained overnight and into the morning, and remained cloudy all day. This dropped the temperature to 95.
When I left for my lunch break yesterday it was 92 degrees with 82% humidity. (As in, there was a slight drizzle.) This was WONDERFUL! OMG, this is such a difference from 108 and bone dry. It was so nice to walk outside and not feel like my skin was getting scorched.
In conclusion, no the "dry heat" is not better. It is worse.

I've lived most of my life within 60 miles or so of the Gulf of Mexico, so I'm used to the humidity, and I'll take it any day over the summers when I was in Arkansas and it would be 105 degrees with no rain for two months straight.

I mean, 85 and low humidity is so much better than 85 and high humidity. But once you get into scorching dry heat, they’re both pretty miserable.

I can't remember the last time we had this pronounced of a shift from summer to fall. Last week it went from 90 to 65 in two days. Our high tomorrow might not even hit 60. Granted, I can almost guarantee we'll have some more 80-degree days in October (or at least upper 70s) but it's kind of startling, actually!

I have for a long time now had a sort of rough time dealing with the transition from summer to fall. It has become more pronounced with the passing years, and the increasing feeling of time slipping away (and the severe hay fever from all the dust kicked up by harvesting doesn't help) but once that break over point has passed, I really enjoy fall. That's where I am right now. I have gotten so much more done this last week or two, with the beautiful weather we've had, that I feel like I'm accomplishing stuff again. Next big challenge: climbing the ladder, sweeping the chimney, cleaning the wood burning stove, and getting ready for that warm, comforting, wood fired heat for the winter.

We got about 2-3 inches of snow overnight. It is very unusual for this area to get snow before Thanksgiving. On one hand, I love snow in the winter. I have seen snow once or twice before Halloween, but that was extremely rare. We often had snow around the holidays when I was a kid, and the season seems a bit depressing when we just get cold, damp weather all winter, so I am kind of excited. On the other hand, I get to crawl around in the snow under the truck, working on the trailer connector wiring this morning, so that isn't as much fun. At least the truck is 4WD, although there really isn't enough snow on the ground to be much of a hazard.

It's 72 and sunny here today. How are you feeling about having the same weather as Phoenix?

(We had originally planned to drive to Kansas City on Friday, but now that's happening Wednesday instead!)

I hate La Niña winters, when it's plenty cold but also devastatingly dry here in the Southwest. I have a fireplace and plenty of wood but I only use it when there's some damp snow because, otherwise, there's not enough humidifiers in the world to offset jerkifying my sinuses.

It's supposed to get down to like 19 tonight. I know that's not super-cold for many of you, but I remind you that I live in Florida. I don't know that it's ever gotten that low in the nearly twenty years I've been living here.

When I checked the weather last night, it was -6 with a wind chill of -26, and they said it would be a wind chill of -45 before morning, but I haven't checked if it got that bad. It's up to -1 now, but still, it's real freakin' cold out there.

My apartment in LA is pretty much a quintessential midcentury one—giant sliding windows, barely-functional heating system. At the time (30s-60s) there was a thing in architecture about how inappropriate the aspirational Hollywood lifestyle was for the climate: stuff like Hollywood stars in cable knit sweaters in front of fireplaces in home inspired by Gilded Age mansions in NY. I don’t always miss the fireplace, but you need the sweater! That noted

I don’t always miss the fireplace, but you need the sweater! It can handle it - our house is brand new and up to code - but it's designed to be easy to cool, and so we're probably using more energy to heat it than is ideal.

Let's mark this down. January 2nd, 2023 is a day when Phoenix is officially ahead of its annual rainfall average. It has been raining on and off here for two days. So, our annual rainfall is officially at .54". According to the tracker, this is +.48" ahead of average.
"Average" has been re-normed. From 1981-2010 annual average rainfall was 8.03". Because of the sustained drought, the average has been re-normed, going off the 1991-2020 records. It is now 7.22".
So, we've now achieved approximately 1/14th of our expected rainfall for the year. And possibly more is coming overnight.
Gotta love rain watching in the desert. Rain comes so rarely that we all pay attention when it actually comes. Last year was shaping up to be a dismal rain year until the final week of the year. The official rain gauge still says we were 1.5" short, but when a metro area average is taken, we were only .2" low. For some weird reason, the official rain gauge at the airport is in the part of the metro area that gets the lowest amount of rain. It is very strange.

Over here in the Northeast where it's supposed to be, y'know, cold in the winter, it's 50 degrees outside at 0830 going to a rainy high of 56, and tomorrow is forecast to be 65. I do not approve.

Ten days ago we had sub-zero temps and now it's gonna be 50 today, and then get colder again (30s mostly) with a chance of snow tomorrow. Goody.

It is cold here. Not "cold" like you all think of cold, but cold for Phoenix. The highs have been in the mid-50s all week, which is about 10 degrees below normal. It has been below normal here for probably the last 6 weeks or so. Huge sections of Phoenix metro have been under Freeze Warnings overnight the last few nights. It was 36 degrees when I woke up this morning at 7:30am. The Grand Canyon and Flagstaff are expecting single-digit and possibly negative temperatures overnight.
Flagstaff has now recorded its 4th highest snow amount in January, all time, with 57.9" of snow.
All this to say, it's cold! I don't have appropriate clothing for this. I'm not even sure I own a pair of gloves anymore. All my clothing purchases are designed around the idea of keeping cool. So, now I'm cold all the time. It is cold in my work office, even more than normal. Our rehearsal room this morning was really cold. It was 42 degrees when I left rehearsal on Thursday night.
It isn't supposed to rise above 60 until Wednesday. Whine! I don't have enough warm clothes for this. Please, temperatures, please start going back up.

Update: It is still too cold. It was 56 degrees yesterday. We had a freeze warning last night. We *maybe* will get up to 60 today. I swear, it was 75 and sunny just for the Super Bowl, to trick all the tourists.
Stop being cold, damn it!
On Twitter, I asked the NWS about January because it was so abnormally cold. They sent me the data. The highs were about 4 degrees colder than average. Just missed the top 20 coldest Januarys on record. I think it came in ranked at 23rd, from what I remember. December was colder than average, January was colder than average. Now February is having many days under average.
It's also been rainy. On Tuesday we had a thunderstorm. It was 50 degrees, with an ice cold wind, and there was a thunderstorm.
Um, scientists? I don't think this was a La Niña winter.

Gale-force winds today. I'm expecting the power to go out any second.
Yep, I experienced the same thing. We were on the southern edge of that giant storm as it swept across the country. The winds hit overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Wow! There were trees down across the city. I nearly got knocked over by a wind gust as I was walking from the parking lot into my office building. The wind gusts were over 60 mph in the city, and up into the 80 mph+ range up across the north central part of the state. We had power outages all across the city early in the morning due to the wind. And of course, another thunderstorm in February. Second one this month! Loved waking up to see lightning at 6am. It was 50 degrees!!
The northern part of the state got hit hard. Lots of snow, ice and wind. I'm not sure if the conditions ever quite got there in reality, but there were blizzard warnings up across the northern part of the state. The NWS in Flagstaff is saying they can't even measure how much snow fell because the high winds caused major snow drifts. They have repeatedly asked for help from locals on Twitter. They sent out a short video clip from their offices, which should demonstrate the problem they are having:

I think we've had a grand total of 2" of snow this entire winter, including a "storm" last night that was supposed to be 5-8" but dropped like an inch of slush.
