Pretty self-explanatory. Which bands do you frequently confuse, or have you confused in the past, much to the amusement of others? For me:
Capital Cities/Big Data - The most corporate sounding modern rock band names I've ever heard. It's like they both flipped through a Malcolm Gladwell book and just pointed.
Fuck Buttons / Fucked Up - Sound nothing alike, but came out in the same wave of 'expletive bands' that also gave us the similarly confusing Shitdisco and Shit Robot.
Pale Saints/Pale Fountains - I wonder if they ever played a double bill? I still confuse them.
The Wedding Present/The Birthday Party - The latter had Nick Cave, so that helped me sort it out.

Beach House/Real Estate - They sound pretty different (the former is heavily produced dream pop, the other is a mixture of low-key surf and yacht rock), but they're both LA-based, both prominently featured on our local NPR station, and have both been around for five years or so. Purity Ball/Purity Ring - I'll admit to never having listened to these. Amazing Rhythm Aces/Atlanta Rhythm Section - Not my choice, but still worth a shout out.

For a long time I thought "Sonny" was Henry Rollins' nickname, and not a completely different artist. Oops.
Also I still don't think Cake and Cage the Elephant are different bands.

That's almost as bad has how I was convinced that John Cale and J.J. Cale were the same person until my 20s. That reminds me: Warren Zevon / Boz Skaggs / J.J. Cale Cage the Elephant / Young the Giant - the latter band is actually pretty good IMO, I like the lead singer. El Perro Del Mar / Pedro the Lion - neither is spanish, I think both are Scandinavian Gossip / The Make-Up - This was embarrassing. Clinic / HEALTH - both are good The Thermals / Matt & Kim / Mates of State Mercury Rev / The Mars Volta The Horrors / The Kooks Alkaline Trio / Aluminium Group - This one used to be quite embarrassing in my early days as a wannabe Chicago hipster. Vivian Girls / Dum Dum Girls - for obvious reasons Beach Fossils / Beach Slang - Don't even get me started on all the Captured Tracks/Glassnote bands that are different configurations of the same people.

Couple more:
The Jesus Lizard / Jesus Jones
Babylon Zoo / Magnetic Fields - thank god this confusion only lasted a few weeks in high school, until I heard some Magnetic Fields and became a lifelong convert

I used to get Talking Heads and Teenage Head confused all the time, until I realized that (*hands in TIF membership*) Teenage Head were the band I liked and Talking Heads were not.

I used to get surprised when I'd see someone talking about how well respected Godflesh are because I'd mixed them up with Godsmack.

LALALALA I CANT HEAR YOU! Between this and that other thing you said about the Talking Heads, you are slipping in the ranking of sexy bearded TIers. In college, the drummer for the Dead Milkman lived in an apartment above my best friend, and he complained constantly about her music being too loud.

The Brits may not like me for this, but I can never keep the Stereophonics and Spiritualized straight. I think I like one of those two...
EDIT: Add Super Furry Animals to this. I think one or more of these groups are Welsh???

Pulp and Blur. Frankly, I wouldn't be able to identify any britpop band.
When I was young I used to get Bruce Springsteen and Rick Springfield mixed up.

Super Furry Aminals and Spiritualized are both outstandingly good. Stereophonics are plain fare, very plain, making Oasis sound like Brian Eno.

Pulp and Blur. Frankly, I wouldn't be able to identify any britpop band. Well, I can see your dilemma, but fyi, blur has a foxy blond lead singer and Pulp has a foxy brunette lead singer (and a girl on keyboards). And neither should be confused with Suede, featuring a foxy brunette lead singer who used to bang blur's lead singer's gf. Many 'britpop' bands were fronted by vaguely simian men with shag haircuts. Plus you had some bands that were so derivative of other bands in sound and style that it sort of lapsed into self-parody. Menswear en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_Dad

I'm 87% sure Deacon Blue, Dire Straights and Simple Minds are actually one band.

I'm 87% sure Deacon Blue, Dire Straights and Simple Minds are actually one band. Early Simple Minds (first 6 albums) were nothing like famous Simple Minds, and are well worth your time. Start with Empires and Dance. Electro-pop, Krautrock, Eno homages - it's all in there.

Orb and Orbital. Whichever formed second was just asking to be confused with the other.

I'd say Jawbreaker and Jawbox (who I actually saw play together one time) but I wouldn't be fooling anyone

I sometimes think my three most-typed words on this site have been 'Early Simple Minds'. I'll shut up about them now.
