Well, I can see your dilemma, but fyi, blur has a foxy blond lead singer and Pulp has a foxy brunette lead singer (and a girl on keyboards). And neither should be confused with Suede, featuring a foxy brunette lead singer who used to bang blur's lead singer's gf. Justine Frischmann started Suede with Brett Anderson before she left and started Elastica (who are THE BEST). Credit where credit is due, yo.

Marshall Crenshaw/Mayer Hawthorne This officially the one of these I get the least (aside from both being from Detroit which I assume wasn't a factor).

Not having seen the video, for a good while I thought Bootie Brown's verse on Gorillaz's "Dirty Harry" from Demon Days was Jay-Z.

Both have waspy surnames-as-given-names starting with M, both share surnames with major boulevards in South Los Angeles. Anyhoo: Paul Oakenfold/Paul Manafort

Waco Brothers / Avett Brothers / Palace Brothers / Pernice Brothers Isley Brothers? Naw, the Isley Brothers are absolute soul legends. The others are just a bunch of white indie dudes playing banjos, as far as I know.

S.O.D./M.O.D.
But I think that's kinda the whole idea there.

S.O.D./M.O.D. But I think that's kinda the whole idea there. Somewhat along those lines: P.O.D. - Puddle of Mudd For many years I was automatically dismissing Puddle of Mud as a crappy Christian metal band rather than automatically dismissing them as a crappy nu-metal band. I have known the difference for years now, but occasionally the confusion will pop back up. This was a bad year for the lead singer of Puddle of Mudd between onstage meltdowns and standoff with 30 police officers. Whenever I read about that though I was immediately confused, thinking of what are those christian metal dudes up to now?

I just now realized that The Jesus and Mary Chain and Alice In Chains are completely different bands.

Many 'britpop' bands were fronted by vaguely simian men with shag haircuts.

Surely we can all agree that Liam Gallagher is by far the bigger shithead. At least the other one is something of a musician.

I mixed up Angel Olsen and Courtney Barnett the other day. Actually felt bad about that one.

I think it's the vocals more than anything. Everybody in that jangly indie rock genre has been singing with a drawl recently. It's like the new "indie folk" that sprouted up around '08, but now they can afford amps.

I could never keep The Chemical Brothers/Dust Brothers straight.
Also Dr. Hook/Dr. Teeth. Although it's easy enough to keep straight when you remember that no classic rock is going to play any thing from The Muppets. Because they are fools.

Bananarama and the Bangles. Which one did Walk Like an Egyptian again? Ooh, Bananarama, Bangles, and Go-Gos for me. This probably means I'm deeply sexist... All I know was this was deeply impactful to a young chalkdevil:

For a while, I had a hard time telling Seether, Breaking Benjamin, and Three Days Grace apart. My confusion got worse when my local rock radio station advertised a concert tour that included all three bands.

Reading through Stereogum's list of NYC rock resurgence bands reminds me of the following:
The Faint / The Bravery The Hold Steady / The Walkmen Stellastar / Starsailor

I recently discovered that most of my favorite Avril Lavigne songs were actually Michelle Branch songs. Now I'm not sure I ever liked Avril Lavigne.
