He was responsible for two utterly brilliant shows. This really caught me off guard.

Ben Grimm, it was the DVD Extras on the Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders Show that swung me back into his camp. He's a very deep, philosophical person with some engaging compassion, despite his public persona as neurotically self-absorbed. I watched his show on Fox back in the late 80s, IIRC it followed the Tracey Ullman Show. I didn't get all the "meta" then, but it was still engaging - I knew something of comic value was happening. I also passingly watched Larry Sanders as first run on HBO between 1992 - 1994. I remember loving it then. Came back to the show via the previously mentioned DVD about 4 years ago. I missed so much back in the first-run, but appreciate much more today. Great work from Mr. Shandling!

The Larry Sanders Show was on at differing times on differing nights in the UK, with nothing as basic as publicity behind it - such were the ways of the BBC in the '90s. It used to be paired up with Seinfeld, which looked very much the junior partner in comparison. It felt about as modern as a sitcom could be, back then, and sharp as fuck. I should look into the DVDs. RIP.

"It's Garry Shandling's Show" may be the most appropriate holder of the "ahead of its time" title in sitcom history. Brilliant and able to do meta better than anything that came after it.
