I have a friend who adores her Hello Fresh subscription. She had her doubts, but it's turned out to be great -- inventive recipes, high-quality ingredients, and the quantities are great for her family. She gave me a coupon for a free week and I really liked the idea of giving it a try, but ultimately decided it wouldn't work out for my household. My reasoning just came down to issues of cooking for a picky eater, though. If you like the recipes you're seeing on their website, and it's within your budget, I don't see why trying it out would be a bad idea.

We do it like once a month. It's kinda pricey and I don't love the amount of packaging waste, BUT! it's been great for introducing new ingredients that I don't think we'd have otherwise thought about cooking with or had the gumption to try. Quite a few of the recipes have made their way into the regular lineup and the food/ ingredient quality is consistently very very good. So for me, a tryout is definitely recommended.

If anyone wants a $30 Blue Apron gift card, HMU--I don't want it I get one of those like every other month, they're pretty widely available.

Finally succumbed to a trial box after so many friends raved about it. UGH it is so not for me. Besides ALL THAT PACKAGING, I don't need to pay $65 or whatever for 2 eggs and a splash of cider vinegar. I get the appeal for people who don't really cook or keep groceries but I already had about half the ingredients they sent me in my pantry/fridge. The first recipe I made was cod with sauteed zucchini and I didn't care for the spices they included. I did it their way to try it but in my opinion it was not good. When I cancelled (which they make it very tricky to do) they said I was obligated to my next order because it was "already being processed" but I feel like that is bullshit because I'm pretty sure I could have skipped that week if I had wanted to. This last box I treated like an episode of Chopped and just said what can I do with this basket's ingredients? Oh and the other thing that was irritating is every other fricking step in each recipe is "season with salt and pepper". I know most people like a lot more salt than I do (sometimes I don't use it all when just cooking for myself) but holy hell if you didn't know jack about cooking and seasoned it every time they included it as a step I don't understand how you wouldn't just end up with a big salt bomb.

We don't have BA up here yet, although of course there are similar businesses doing the same thing. I can't see ever doing it though for the following reasons, 1) the packaging you mention. Even though our recycling program here is amazing I'm guessing not every single thing would be eligible, and anyway there's the resources used in shipping and processing it. 2) It seems way cheaper to just buy my own food and make it. Perhaps slightly less convenient, but cheaper, and I'm all about stretching my dollars. 3) (and most importantly to me) it's too cookie cutter to fit my dietary preferences. I'm not a hugely picky eater, I'm pretty open minded to most things. It's just that I'm just turning 40 this year and can't be the human food disposal unit I was at one time without needing to buy new clothes every year, which takes me back to point number 2. Oh and I prefer to look good with my shirt off.
