Piggybacking on recent ' commenter vs. topic' threads as well as this season of polling and voting on things, I'm putting it to the forum to help me plan a new thread: moimoi vs. the Scottish music scene, or perhaps "moimoi's wee world of scottish music". In order to better explore and appreciate the country with what I will argue is the highest percentage of good bands per capita in the world, I plan to review one album a week from different bands/artists. I've pre-selected 13 Scottish bands that I'm most excited to review: Belle & Sebastian, Cocteau Twins, Donovan, The Fire Engines, Franz Ferdinand, Glasvegas, Jesus & Mary Chain, Josef K, Momus, Orange Juice, Primal Scream, Simple Minds, and Travis. I need your help selecting another 13 acts, for a total of 26. The plan is that in the first week, I'll review the most notable album from one of the pre-selected artists. In the following week, I'll either review another album suggested by comments or a 'wild card' totally random album from among those not selected. So in total, I'll cover somewhere between 26 and 52 acts from old Caledonia. Anything is fair game, as long as it's identifiable as from Scotland and available online (unless you guys want to send me music - I'm cool with that!). And if I've missed anybody from Wikipedia's exhaustive list of Scottish musicians, feel free to add below. 'Ta

Idlewild produced two absolute belters of albums around the turn of the century. 100 Broken Windows and The Remote Part are worthy of any indie rock aficionado's attention.
Their releases after that veered too close to trad Scottish folk for my liking but if that's your thing you could do worse than give them a go.

Big Country, naturally.
The Skids, because they're great (and feature Big Country's Stuart Adamson on guitar).
Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, also, as they were a good little group who fell through the cracks. Though they did give the world Shirley Manson, and should be better known for that.

I'd also suggest Sons and Daughters, but it looks like you've got a pretty full slate already:

MOGWAI - MOGWAI YOUNG TEAM
Also maybe Frightened Rabbit if you have room, but Mogwai is essential.

Yay for bis (among other fine Scottish pop rock bands), though I'm a little sad that there's no The Yummy Fur. And what of The Krankies?! Surely there's room in this grand project for the duo that gave us "Fandabidozi."

Speaking of Bis - I found out this week that their guitarist has a new band called Batteries and they're good (and Scottish) if noisy post-punk that's equal parts Devo and Queens of the Stone Age is yr thing.

Nice, Big Country in the lead. You might hate them, though. Eh, should be all right. First 3 albums hold up exceptionally well.
