Cool, thanks! I've always wondered--down here in Tennessee our Christmas drink of choice is boiled custard, which is basically creme Anglaise served as a drink instead of as a dessert sauce. I believe the T&J is at least somewhat regional. Wisconsinites love their hot alcohol. Also, beer.

Had some really good wines over Christmas. Arista Pinot Noir, probably my favorite wine ever. Drank it way too fast as always. Last night we killed a bottle of Laetitia Pinot Noir as well.

After work I had a few beers at the local brew pub, I'm not good with beer so I don't know what to compare it to. They call it Thoroughbred Red. Anyway, I got fairly drunk off of that and had to take a little nap. Now I'm having a Coke. I wonder if it's an Irish Red, maybe? Karben 4 in Madison, WI has an Irish Red called Lady Luck that I am partial to. Also, Central Waters has Ouisconing Red. I enjoy them. It occurs to me that this place has a huge board on the wall that gives you tons of info on every beer, so I'll give you the scoop next time I go in there!

I am hoping to get to the local Irish Pub to knock back another pint of Space Ghost tomorrow - it's a porter brewed with ghost peppers. Spicy and delicious.

That sounds terrifying to my bland palette! I never had any spicy foods growing up, so I have no tolerance whatsoever for spicy stuff now.

Some kind of mulled wine my friend made, but I think she steeped it with orange peels, complete with pith attached. It tastes like wine laced with furniture cleaner or earwax.
I think I'ma have to dump it down the toilet, pretend I drank it, and then cram my mouth full of Tic-Tacs.

I drank something called "Scotty Karate Scotch Ale" tonight that was rich, dark, creamy, and smooth. Yummy!

My current favorite beer, and one that is nearly gone (seasonal beers: delicious but ephemeral)
Capital Brewery Autumnal Fire Doppelbock.

I drank many delicious cocktails over the holidays. My favorite, which I forgot to stealthily write down the recipe for involved Spanish brandy and chinotto and I wanted to drink it endlessly. Second place involved Champagne and grapefruit liqueur.

OK, two things. Monk's Cafe: YUM. And I WANT that Jester King bottle. I have a few of them but that's my favorite.

Lavender and rose rooibos tea. So strange and delightful.
Later, whatever crappy beer they have at the CAVS game.

Aloe and wheatgrass juice from Alo. Love it so much I bought a case of that and the one that is aloe/wheatgrass/coconut. The regular tastes like watermelon and the coco one tastes like creamy watermelon. Damn, they are good.

Mrs. Snape and Baby Snape are out for the weekend, off to Austin for Sister Snape-in-Law's baby shower. Unsurprisingly, The Lascivious Snape decides to get his drink on. Southern Tier Creme Brulee Stout. I was blown away by their Choklat stout at my b-day dinner, and this might be even better. A malty stout first and foremost, the flavors of vanilla, burnt sugar and milk slowly slide their way into the aftertaste. That's 3 stouts from this brewery I've absolutely loved. (Disclosure: picture is not mine, but if I took one right now, it'd probably look like that.)

It's 9:30 in the morning here, so I'm drinking tea. Corn silk tea to be specific. Last night I drank some Apfelwein I brought back with me from Germany.

I scored on my birthday and discovered that the bar I was enjoying a speakeasy-themed concert at carries blackstrap rum. So, I finally got to enjoy a Junglebird cocktail, which someone told me about in a AVC forum over a year ago. Totally tasted like coffee an pancakes, as advertised!

I'm scaring myself by ripping through the bottle of Russian Standard vodka on Friday. It's actually made me like vodka.

This one is just for Ron Howard Voice. Valentine's Day Beer Dinner at the Holy Grail Pub. 2nd course was "oysters rockefeller" cream soup topped with a fried oyster, and served with (512) Cascabel Cream Stout. Sorry about the ugly mug. Attachments:

Yesterday went with a friend to this new place the Madison Pour House which is definitely a beer haven. I really liked the Stillwater Stateside Saison, and the Saranac NY Native Cream Ale, which is a pilot beer not on the market yet that they are testing out at this place (and probably a few others). Also the other day tried the Shiner 966 Farmhouse Ale which was insanely delicious. I'm a sucker for saisons it seems.

I had a Shiner Ruby Redbird today with lunch, having succumbed to my longstanding desire and purchased one at the local grocery. My experience with it comprised approximately two separate schools of thought.
Thought 1: "This is not great. I don't know if the grapefruit flavour really works." Thought 2 (seven minutes later): "How is the bottle already empty? Why didn't I just get a sixer of this, I could really go for another one."

I'd put it at #3 for Spoetzel, behind Shiner Holiday Cheer and of course the Bock. But I love grapefruit so I'm always happy when I encounter it.

Tonight I'm drinking from this selection: 4 beers made with the same base recipe - the only difference between them is the hop variety used. I'm just about done with the Exp 366 which is ace. Loads of grapefruit flavour from that. The Comet had a less fruity bitterness which I'm totally down with as a regular drinker of old school British bitters.

What a fabulous night you have to look forward to. We don't see a lot of Brew Dog in Texas saved for their base beers - Punk IPA, Hardcore IPA, Dogma - but I have had the privilege of trying both the Tokio (or Tokyo) and the Paradox Jura, both revelatory experiences I count among the best beers I've ever had.

I'm lucky enough to live a short walk from one of their bars so I have easy access to their wares with Punk being my go to pint when I'm out. Agreed on the Tokyo, it's a special one but I haven't had the Paradox Jura yet (I do love Jura whisky so that's bound to be a winner.)

I would probably agree with this, though I might prefer the Redbird to the Bock in warm weather. Still, Shiner Bock is a solid beer. Don't get me started on their Holiday Cheer - it's one of those things I didn't find right away, like basil pesto. A local bar came into a couple cases of it right around New Year's and nobody found out, apparently, so I was drinking Cheer until maybe two weeks ago.

Two favorite pours from this last weekend's Dallas Brewfest:
1. Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. I'll admit I don't give Goose Island the respect they probably deserve, what with the Anheuser-Busche association, but this beer knocked me on my ass. A MONSTER stout at 14.2%, the bourbon sings lead in this incredibly rich and complex brew. A perfect sipper for cold evenings beside the fire (because we have so many of those in Texas). I don't know if they actually sell it down here, so I'm glad I took a chance on it.
2. Shandy of Firewheel Brewery's Cinnamon Midnight Ninja and Caramel Root Beer. Firewheel Brewing out of Rowlette, TX has a pretty good black lager called Midnight Ninja. They also have a line of really excellent root beers (their maple root beer will ruin all other root beers for you). At Brewfest, they debuted a Cinnamon Midnight Ninja. They guy talked us in to trying a mixture of the Ninja and some caramel root beer. Revelation! Yeah, you're not going to be able to get this one yourself. Sorry.
Worst pour from this last weekend's Dallas Brewfest:
1. Samuel Adams Fat Jack. Unsurprisingly, a lot of breweries were pimping their pumpkin beers, so we tried 3-4 a piece. The Samuel Adams Fat Jack might have put me off the style completely. Overwhelmingly woody and vegetal, with almost no spice character, this was basically a harsh, alcoholic pumpkin rind in a glass. We both took one sip and poured it out. Awful beer.
