So I got to see this in a packed theater yesterday on Christmas. It was different than I expected, but I liked it a lot. It's not quite a musical in the way I expected, in that there aren't really any big musical numbers after the first two. It's mostly dances set to instrumental pieces, and a few short songs. Instead, it uses the music more as an accent to the story, going from an exuberant, theatrical opening to a more sedated and melancholy middle, before rebounding to a fantastic, rawly emotional ending. I can see how this may work less for some who are less invested in the characters and story, but I thought the leads were extremely charming with excellent chemistry, adding some real weight to an otherwise typical story. It looked absolutely gorgeous, too. While most comparisons are appropriately to the likes of Singin' In The Rain (I'll also throw in a bit of West Side Story, too), the recent musical this reminded me a lot of was Once. (Alternately: a less-twee 500 Days of Summer.)
