So, Peter Capaldi is gone at Christmas this year. He's been great, but ratings have slipped a little, so I'm afraid his successor will be another youngish handsome man in the Tennant/Smith mold (both of whom were fantastic, btw, but I really don't want to go back to that paradigm just yet). So, who would I like to see?
Tilda Swinton - the bookmakers' favorite at this point. Of course she'd be amazing, but is a move to full time TV for the next few years a move she's willing to make?
Freema Agyeman - not in any conversations I've seen, and her past as a full time companion complicates things, but there's a charisma to her that I think would work in the role
Haley Atwell - a lot of chatter here as well, and another potential home run. Almost seems too perfect
Ruth Wilson - can she pull off the warmth and goofiness I believe Chibnall (new showrunner) may be looking for after Capaldi's pricklier take? Still, she would kill the alien, hyper-brilliant aspects of the role
Chiewetel Ejiofor - has been rumored the past couple of times, similar pros and cons to Wilson
Patterson Joseph - reportedly was in the running for Eleven, magnetic performer who I believe could handle both the lighter, fun side and the intensity of the Time Lord
Indira Varma - another Luther alum (along w Ruth Wilson) who interests me as a possibility. Not exactly sure why, just a hunch
Paul McGann - not as 13, but one actual series as 8 (to break in the new production team?) is always a dream. Also was on Luther. Not happening, but I really wish it was. The glimpse we got of his fully realized Doctor in 'Night of' is so damn good.
Idris Elba - And finally Luther himself. Even less likely than McGann, but this bloke is dream casting in everything for a reason.
So, my picks. As you can see, I'm very much in the 'new Doctor should be a woman and/or person of color' camp. Moffat has opened the door wide, will Chibnall follow through? Really hoping so.

Of the names I've heard bandied about lately, I like Haley Atwell and Richard Ayoade the most. If they chicken out on making the Doctor a woman, a minority, or both, I'd probably pick Dylan Moran, though I haven't seen his name mentioned.

RICHARD AYOADE
He is the one who I think could most convincingly pull off the alien vibe I would like the doctor to have. I haven't seen him do drama before, but the look and the energy he could bring to the role is something I believe would work with who.
Any other time I see other people's choices I just can't see it. You need something other than just "good actor who is from the uk".

For a real change of pace, how about pick a different IT Crowd/Mighty Boosh alum and go with Matt Berry. He could even just wear a modified John Pertwee ruffled shirt and velour jacket costume. Bring back Venusian Akido. Go for goofy macho Doctor, as a change from goofy nerd Doctor and brooding nerd Doctor. Or I guess if you cast Elba, then you could have brooding macho Doctor, but that actually sounds a lot less fun.

A few years back, I daydreamed a mockumentary-type thing where Michael Grade put the show on hiatus in 1985 to drastically retool the series and named Garth Marenghi as the showrunner. The cast would have included Noel Fielding's glam-rock take on the Doctor and Matt Berry as the new head of UNIT. Upon seeing the first episode of the retooled series, which featured a cliffhanger involving a Dalek and a closeup of the Doctor's bejeweled codpiece, Grade scrapped the project and eventually allowed the JNT/Saward/C. Baker iteration to continue. I'm fully on board for a woman/POC as the Doctor, but Berry would be a hell of a lot of fun.

Another one I could see working is Tamsin Greig. Not sure if they'll want to go with someone in their 50s again right after Capaldi, though.

I've heard rumors about Sue Perkins. Not totally sold, but somewhat intrigued. I know some folks tend to prefer non-comedians in the role (my namesake, Syl McCoy, and apparently Ayoade notwithstanding), but then again I'm an unapologetic fan of the Cartmel/McCoy era, and somehow there's a whiff of that kind of anarchy in casting Perkins. Then again, I'm only familiar w her from the Bake Off, so feel free to disabuse me of that notion.

Seems like a real stretch, given that her only actual screen acting credits are from sketch comedy from over 20 years ago. She's a host and panelist. That doesn't disqualify her, of course, but just based on resume, Jeremy Clarkson would be as likely a choice.

Been saying this ever since the first episode of Utopia... Fiona O'Shaughnessy. She can play utterly alien.

Noting that the guy McCoy pipped to the post for the gig was his mentor Ken Campbell, who was considered too weird and menacing for the role. (There's a Liverpool-based fan project to use archive recordings of Ken found by his daughter Daisy to make a series called The Lost Doctor, which is a lot of fun.) Here they are back in the day.

They should take the show in a new direction. I'm thinking hardcore pornography - is Ron Jeremy busy these days?

How pissed off would people be if, hypothetically, they cast the lead from Birdemic as the new Doctor?
Also, on a more serious note, I have seen exactly zero episodes of Dr. Who all the way through, but if Richard Ayoade were cast as the next Doctor, I would definitely start watching the show.

But seriously, new showrunner and either Fiona or Ayoade would probably get me to start watching Doctor Who again. Most of the people mentioned in this thread, really.

That episode never happened. So I changed your picture to more accurately reflect that episode.

Oh, I certainly have my trepidations about Chibnall. He doesn't have it in him to be the kind of auteur figure Davies and Moffat were, but I'm hoping he can surround himself w a good team and great writers.

I've never seen Torchwood but that is terrifying. Torchwood is wildly, wildly inconsistent. There were some good episodes in the second season (and I think a few in the first), and the third "season" was a five-episode miniseries that was excellent. And the fourth season was basically taking an idea that you might have been able to make a decent single episode out of and stretching it way past the breaking point, to ten episodes, until it becomes actively unpleasant to watch.

I would love to see Hayley Atwell or Richard Ayoade as the Doctor.
If they are going to stick with white and male, it really needs to be Noel Fielding.
I could definitely see Indira Varma. She was on Torchwood as well, and made the best of a terrible decision when she was added to Season 2 of Human Target as a character actually named Poochie.
Love Sue Perkins, but can't really see her as the Doctor. Maybe a companion though. But if we're picking from the female comedians pile, I would love to see Aisling Bea as the Doctor!

I thought Ben Whishaw (is that his name? the current "Q") was the most oft-suggested name?

Richard Ayoade - absolutely not. Love him, but wrong for this. Patterson Joseph gets my vote all the way. Haley Atwell is my female choice, Tilda would very obviously be brilliant but I dont see her putting her movie career on hold for the next three years for Doctor Who. But I'm more than more than more than happy to be proved wrong.

Sean looks just like Jon did during his tenure. Maybe they should just slap a wig on him and make some lost Third doctor serials.

Sadly, despite a penchant for dressing up in his father's costume, Sean has made it very clear that he won't do the Third Doctor on screen. Which means we have to return to our familiar stomping ground of Big Finish, who have done two full-cast Third Doctor sets, with Tim Treloar taking over from Jon Pertwee.

Children of Men Earth (the third season miniseries) is worth watching. Capaldi is in it playing a government official, and it's one of the best performances I've seen out of him. And it's got a huge gutpunch of an ending. Don't watch Miracle Day unless you hate yourself and think you deserve to be punished, and not in a fun way.
