It's that special time of year again. Last year's April Fools edition of Record Club got us all to listen to a pretty rough album, which was the point. This year features a new twist: not only are you invited to nominate a stinker, but it has to be something you currently enjoy. What's more, you are expected to show up in the final review thread and defend your selection. "Why are you doing this to us?" we will cry out. And you will answer. Of course, you don't want to nominate something too awful, otherwise no one will vote for it. Aim for a record that may or may not have been popular but at least made enough of a splash to face a fair bit of derision today. You should probably provide some evidence that this album is a bit of a joke these days, unless it's completely obvious. You get two selections.

I'll lead with a record that I still love, that I guarantee I have listened to at least once in the past 12 months: Spin Doctors, "Pocket Full of Kryptonite". It's a great record, you guys! But it got name-checked by AVC's Hatesong feature and in last year's Deadpool as terrible.

Jason Mraz, Mr. A-Z.
I don't even care, you guys, I love this album. It's fun and stupid.

P.M. Dawn - Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience
The one with "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss". Successful in its time but nowadays these guys are remembered as an example of early '90s granola fluffiness, continuing to be hyped to this day by Robert Christgau and absolutely no one else. Regardless, I think the album scratches a Native Tongues itch successfully enough and would be interesting to revisit in light of the "cloud-rap" trend of recent years.

I was in a record shop one April Fools' wherein each spot on the wall racks was placed a Phil Collins record. I happen to like much of his '80s and '90s output, and I was fond of my mom's "Serious Hits... Live!" cassette as a kid, so I'll go with that.

Korn - Korn
For as bad as they became and for all the terrible, terrible shit rock the begot, I still kind of like the first Korn album (the one with the bagpipe and nursery rhyme song on it).

Pick #2: childhood car cassette staple UB40, "Promises and Lies". It's not the one with "Red Red Wine", that was a covers album, but it is the one with the cover of "(I Can't Help) Falling in Love With You". That's right, UB40.

Nu Metal Is Good, Actually
Limp Bizkit - Significant Other
Evidence this is derided these days: No one wears red caps now. Everyone laughs at me when I say I like Limp Bizkit.

Smash Mouth - Astro Lounge
Obvious reasons. But they're so much stupid fun.
Snow Patrol - Final Straw
Remember Snow Patrol? moimoi might (shout out to the Scots thread!). But yeah, this is one of those albums that I hate in theory and then I hear it and I can't help liking it.

I always forget that Snow Patrol started out in Dundee due to the singer being from Northern Ireland but yeah, good one. Spitting Games is a great song.

Dammit, Phil Collins solo and Genesis output back then was so good it's almost cheating to categorize him this way. Stupid Bret Easton Ellis.

I don't hate myself or anyone else here enough to do worse. You're right though, and those albums weren't universally panned; I suppose it's more that he's been looked down upon by certain groups/critics who account themselves - and may - discerning listeners. But if he/it wasn't execrated enough, I can try to think of something else.

Continuing with the genre of maligned '90s alt-rock, I nominate Blind Melon's self-titled debut, featuring the hit single "No Rain".
I don't even hate that song, but it's definitely an outlier on an album that's otherwise loaded with some solid grunge-influenced Southern rock.

Boston - S/T
They get derided as one of the worst of the 70s-80s antiseptic corporate rock bands alongside others like Foreigner, Chicago and Journey. But the debut, man. There's not a bad song on it. I guarantee that right this second, every single one of these tracks is being broadcast on a classic rock station.

I just barely enjoy this currently. Crispin Glover, The Big Problem ≠ The Solution. The Solution = Let It Be (1989) The title is a riddle that Glover asked listeners to solve. The "songs" are fun. The readings are painful. Topical to current events in that recent passing of Bill Paxton raised awareness of song "Fish Heads"; Paxton directed its video. But, somehow I didn't see Paxton's participation in Martini Ranch as frequently name-checked after his passing. Producers of this record are writers/producers of "Fish Heads". Ta-da!No one will enjoy this. I won't enjoy defending it. And, we'll all feel fully fooled by its contents.

An erstwhile friend of mine who was a devoted prog rocker regarded Genesis' pop turn, at least somewhat fatuously I thought, as an unforgivable betrayal, but Gabriel went in the same direction if more 'artily'(?) so, and incorporated some of Collins' innovations in his own solo output. And, actually, "A Trick of the Tail", sans Gabriel, is arguably one of Genesis' better pre-pop efforts. But I won't say more lest it win and I've exhausted my thoughts on the subject.

Is this an official nomination for A Trick of the Tail? If not, I'm happy to take it as my number 2 pick. Heck of an album.

Does Andrew WK's I Get Wet qualify? It's pretty much derided as a joke, but it legitimately changed my life.

Does Andrew WK's I Get Wet qualify? It's pretty much derided as a joke, but it legitimately changed my life. Isn't it now critically acclaimed and universally loved? I know when it first came out the No Fun Club was all like, "Boo, Casio keyboard sounds and 80s party rock guitar heroics. LAME!" but I think everyone was retroactively like, "Nah mang, I Get Wet is a solid rock album."

I wouldn't admit this in public, but I quite like the Danzigless faux-Misfits American Psycho album. I like that album a lot too... It's no Walk Among Us (even though it features a song called "Walk Among Us") but it's a fun, trashy pop-metal-punk record. It would be held in much higher regard if it was credited to anyone but The Misfits Now, Famous Monsters and whatever dreck came after it, that is some straight-up garbage

This is kind of a hard question. I'm assuming this would fall under the category of "guilty pleasure"? If I'm right, maybe I'll go with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
