As August was for musical duos, September is for musical singularities. The theme this time are albums and artists based on a singular vision. You can nominate any solo artist if you want, but I'm really thinking of of auteurs and multi-instrumentalists who are a singular driving force. I'm going to rip the text straight from TV Tropes: Sorry, I'm too busy to think of a theme on my own. (I go on vacation in two weeks; I'll post the poll next Thursday or Friday but pantsgoblin can you post the thread for winner?). Two nominations each!

Fan though I am, this one has already been nominated in this month's Anniversary Record Club. Please choose a different Beck album, I will vote for it.

João Gilberto: João Gilberto [1973] So Brazilian artists aren’t evidently so hot on actually naming their albums (there are multiple Caetano Veloso albums named Caetano Veloso, too) but this is probably the most João Gilberto of the João Gilbertos. He’s infamously focused—he’ll often request that HVAC be turned off during performances—and this is a very quiet, intimate, minimalist album, mostly guitar and voice with just a bit of percussion.
Isao Tomita: The Planets João Gilberto’s minimal sound was actually engineered by Wendy Carlos, but her stuff is basically impossible to find on youtube and even dailmotion/metacafe so I’ll go with the next-most famous synthesizer interpreter of classical music: Isao Tomita. We had a VHS documentary about the planets at my house when I was a kid, narrated by Patrick Stewart and with using Tomita’s version of Gustav Holst’s The Planets as the score—it was basically a narrated visual album. Anyway Patrick Stewart begins by talking about the music and he says in his very Patrick Stewart way “The Tomita Planets is performed by one man,” which blew my mind as a kid. One man as orchestra, one person in control of an array of otherwordly sounds arranged in a classical melody. While Snowflakes Are Dancing might be more groundbreaking and influential, The Planets is Tomita’s masterwork.

Not sure if I'm fuzzy on the criteria, but...
Nine Inch Nails -- The Fragile
I could probably come up with a few more interesting options if my brain wasn't so damn sluggish.

"I, Jonathan" - Jonathan Richman -- I think this should count as, despite the fact that it's attributed to Jonathan Richman, it's closer in spirit to the Modern Lovers.
"Ram" - Paul McCartney's second solo album after 'McCartney.' Perhaps picks up and continues the stylistic approach of 'Abbey Road' more so than any other post-Beatles Beatles album.

Greg Graffin - American Lesion ( link) Solo effort from the Bad Religion frontman, showing off less of his punk rock side and more of his Todd Rundgren-y influences. He recorded all the tracks himself at his basement studio in Ithaca. Critical opinion is largely negative, including an entry on this inventory back in the Old Country, but I'm still a sucker for the 'lidge and any of their related side projects. The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs ( link) Stephen Merritt is credited as songwriter on all 69 tracks. While there are additional band members performing with him (and Lemony Snicket on accordion, at one point?), Wiki credits him with vocals, Digitech vocalist, Roland harmonizer, vocoder, ukulele, baritone ukulele, Kaholas ukulele, Admira classical, acoustic-electric 12-string guitar, lap steel, fado guitar, bass, mandolin, autoharp, marxophone, ukelin, tremoloa, violin-uke, sitar, zither, violin, musical saw, keyboards, synclavier, Moog Satellite, piano, harmonium, Wurlitzer electronic piano, organ, rhythm units, recorder, ocarina, pennywhistle, Maestro wind synthesizer, Hohner melodica, Paul Revere jug, rumba box, xylophone, kalimbas, Radio Shack 75-in-One Project Kit, drum kit, cymbals, rain stick, chimera, maracas, conga, bongos, triangle, bells, tambourine, washboard, steel drum, Chicken Shakers, finger cymbals, springs and Slinky guitar, pipes, bamboo harp, spirit chaser, sleighbells, fingersnaps, thunder sheet, cabasas, cowbells, and gong.

Todd Rundgren "Something/Anything" (the first three-quarters are Todd on everything, the last quarter full band performances with other musicians).

Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do (1995). This is the first Aphex Twin album I ever heard.
Think Tank - Skullbuggery (1996). Paul Robb (of Information Society) does industrial-ish EDM, and well.

Last call, I'll put up the poll sometime tomorrow. Sea Change is not going in this poll because I will not have conflict with the Anniversary Record Club. Feel free to nominate a different Beck album.

Remember when you got all mad that pantsgoblin just decided to make some band droning album the Anniversary Club album of the month because it wasn't fair? Not allowing my nomination to even be eligible for voting is 193,938 times more unfair than that was. There's no rule that says a dog can't play baseball and there's no rule that the same album by Beck can't be nominated for Record Club and Anniversary Club in the same month.

No, I remember when that album won fair and square, and so I listened to it and hated it but that's how it goes sometimes. We have a longstanding rule against nominating repeats from the previous month, and this is a logical extension of that. What's the big deal?

Change my nomination to Beck's full album cover of Yanni Live at the Acropolis or disenfranchise me from the musical political progress, but know this, Beck Sea Change will NEVER win any Record Club poll while I draw breath!
