Charlie Munger has collected his death benefit.
Super dug his Musk takedown from a month ago: "We're pitching in behind Build Your Dreams. Damn owner's a genius. Musk ain't got it." (that was a paraphrase) This article-interview in Forbes or The Guardian echoed Buffett's recent wisdom of "We have a golden goose laying eggs for us (humans). Somehow. Some way. We have to redistribute this opportunity to capitalise on the mechanism without displacing wealth already obtained." (again, a paraphrase)

Damn - Shane MacGowan, 65. Amazing lyricist. Sad to say, I must be on my way indeed.
I once knew someone in the music industry, on the album cover design side, who went out boozing with The Pogues once or twice. He said there was always so much going on around them that you didn't realise how much you were drinking, until it all caught up with you at once.

Unconvicted war criminal Henry Kissinger at 100. I recently rewatched Diamonds Are Forever and couldn't help myself from yelling back at the screen when Jill St. John says "What will become of me, James?": "You'll fuck Kissinger, that's what!" Also, I bet Colbert is thanking his lucky stars that he's out this week with appendicitis and won't have to face people posting that unforgivable clip of him dancing with Henry on Report.

Former Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling at 70. He'll probably be unknown to most of you, but he took over as Chancellor in 2007 when Gordon Brown became PM, just in time for the 2007-08 financial crisis. Probably best remembered for blocking the Barclays takeover of Lehman Brothers.

Probably best remembered for blocking the Barclays takeover of Lehman Brothers. In Andrew Rawnsley's second book on the New Labour years, The End of the Party, he mentions a time Gordon Brown was briefing against Alastair Darling for whatever reason. Darling's wife, Maggie, is quoted as saying: 'The fucking cunts are trying to stitch up Alastair! The cunts! I can't believe they're such cunts!' Why that story has stuck in my head when so many others have vanished is something I'll have to reckon with one day.

Why that story has stuck in my head when so many others have vanished is something I'll have to reckon with one day. What's especially funny to me is that the story that stuck in my head, by comparison, was how Alistair Darling told Hank Paulson he had "some concerns" about Barclays buying out Lehman Bros, and Paulson failed to pick up on the understatement. Edit - I think probably because there's something very Richard Curtis about that whole scene, with excruciatingly nice Scottish chancellor Alistair Darling(!) very politely saying "no" to his American counterpart, a massive unit named Hank Paulson (Hank Paulson fer chrissakes! I mean c'mon), who can't wrap his mind around what's just happened.

Sandra Day O'Connor, an undeniably historic figure and, if I may, a still wildly rare example of a SCOTUS justice from west of the Mississippi--the only current one is Gorsuch.

This is a massive headline on the state newspaper today. Basically the entire front page is dedicated to her. Very happy to see her get this level of respect.

Unconvicted war criminal Henry Kissinger at 100. Reading about his collected war crimes reminds me that our Allies have Always Been Assholes (sung, a la Willy Nelson) and that as long as they're genociding the right minorities, we don't really care.

Reagan wanted to put a woman on SCOTUS. At the time, there weren't a lot women on the bench to choose from, obviously. It is unthinkable nowadays that a nominee would be 1) from a state court or 2) a former electoral politician, though it shouldn't be.
O'Connor deserves credit for keeping Roe v. Wade mostly intact for a few more decades. Then she was the swing vote to throw the election to her preferred presidential candidate in one of the most poorly-justified court decisions ever. She would have retired earlier in the W. Bush administration, but she hung on for a few more years to save face, letting the 2004 election cover for her. She then retired to hand her seat to someone from the hard right who would undo whatever legacy on Roe she had, which Alito has done. That's not to say she wasn't hard right herself, having gotten her start as a tight ally of Goldwater, it just goes to show how far the party has shifted.

Denny Laine, dead at the age of 79, guitarist with Wings, The Moody Blues and other stuff but let's be honest, that's what he'll always be known for. Amazing to think Band on the Run is 50 years young today and he was such a key part of it. I'll admit I've never been much of a Moody Blues fan but I find Wings have a sort of ragged glory to them, despite being so massively inconsistent in terms of quality, and Laine was a part of that (and also a significant part of Tug of War, McCartney's best not-McCartney-II 80s album). www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-67630264

Poet Benjamin Zepheniah, 65. I can't say I got round to reading his any of his work, but he could always be relied on to tell the government of the day to get fucked, and that's good enough for me.

Andre Braugher, way too young at 61. I found out right before bed last night when I opened Instagram for an idle scroll-through and saw three posts in a row about him from former B99 castmates. I actually gasped in shock. And then I went to sleep still crying a little bit.
