Yahoo, Daveed Diggs triumphs over U2!!!
Thoughts on this album to come. Is this the most recent album we've listened to as part of Record Club? It's gotta be.

I dug it. It's spooky, sparse but not too experimental, or at least the burning piano comes at the end and nobody's making you listen to it (though I did leave it on because I was analyzing data at the time).
Of course, the best parts of the album have the most actual rapping: "Nothing is Safe", "Club Down", The Show", "Blood of the Fang". The latter in particular is puts some serious speed on the delivery and mixes a little contemporary politics into drug-deal-gone-wrong horror stories. Definitely more impressed with Daveed Diggs than the guests. Googling...oh ha, this is one of the Hamilton cast guys. Wow now I have an excuse to recommend this to Wifemate, approximately the polar opposite of her typical musical tastes.
I would love to hear the group try on some heavier production. Not that it should go pop or mainstream, just a little more substance. I need to listen to the new album.

I don't think I've ever seen an album cover more in tune with the musical contents of this album. So sparse, so direct - fifty straight minutes of you hovering inches from the spike pit.
There's no melodies or syncopation or even rhythm on this album - no real hooks to speak of (unless you count "you ain't scared, is you?" as a hook) - the most "musical" the backing tracks get is on "Nothing is Safe," a song with a plunk plunk plunk one-note piano line that Soulja Boy would think beneath him. This is, in other words, an album that is riding exclusively on the talent of the guy rapping. Good thing Daveed Diggs is a talented motherfucker, or this record would suck ass! For real though, it's impressive how Diggs manages to imbue such personality into this record while doubling as a human metronome - he hits juuust the right note of menace for this material, while not laying it on too thick or ever losing his cool.
I am not quite smart enough to decode all the lyrical references or samples, although I did catch the references to both Fred Astaire and the Memphis horrorcore scene this album is (de/re)constructing. (No wonder he jibed so well with LMM.) I think some of the characters carry over from track to track - there's a couple mentions of a Cynthia, for instance - but I'm not entirely sure. I think it might hit a sort of weird bitter spot where it's not a casual listen but it's a bit too monotonous to hold up to repeated scrutiny, but that doesn't mean the album is bad in the slightest.

Whoa! This won?? Yay!
I listened to it around Halloween 2019. I also find the backing music a bit too sparse and monotonous. However, Daveed Diggs is so excellent that I ended up enjoying it quite a lot. Whew, I love listening to him rap. His tone is great, and I love his clarity at high speeds.
Like ganews I also prefer the tracks with the most rapping. "Nothing is Safe" is I think my favorite. "Blood of the Fang" is my #2.
Pretty cool. Horrorcore is not normally my thing, but I do enjoy listening to non-mainstream rap and hip hop.

I need to listen to the new album.
I am planning on listening to it this weekend. I did hear the track they released last week "Pain Everyday". I quite enjoyed this one. It is all kinds of fun to listen to Daveed Diggs rap in 7/4 meter.
