Well I am going to accept Rainbow Rosa 's present. The only time I heard of this band growing up was this one kid in high school with the band name and an upside-down cross on his backpack (in 1997 in Georgia! where was that kid from?). "White Slavery" - Ozzy fans? I like the sweep of it, feels cinematic. "Everyone I Love Is Dead" - Really sounds of its time, which is fine by me. I'm not sure what to make of the vocal performance. It's not quite a yarl, not quite the Godsmack guy. Is it some kind of filter? Does the guy sound like this on every album? I don't dislike it, it's just distinctive. "Who Will Save the Sane?" - Who wouldn't want to go to the psychotropic science fair? A heavy sound and a mournful vocal, makes me think of some 90s Metallica. "World Coming Down" - An iron man reference, I am calling Ozzy fan. I like this crash cymbal/rising riff. A little monkish chant in the back, why not. Wikipedia tells me there was sitar on this track, I say needs *more* sitar. "Creepy Green Light" - Rather rolls his Rs. Church organ is always welcome. "Everything Dies" - Zombie grunts, more crash. Dark, then piano sad. Literal, depressive lyrics. Melodic too, but still hard to imagine this as a single charting in 1999.
"Pyretta Blaze" - This is probably very easy to play or something, but I don't play guitar and I enjoy it a lot. I am also also a fan of mid-song tempo changes, and in cases like this it's like the band put on a different hat (twice!). My favorite song here.
"All Hallows Eve" - Once you get to the one-hour mark, what's left had better be good. Love the intro. The goth rock and soaring guitar later is fine.
"Day Tripper (Medley)" - Ha ha oh man. Pretty cool. Am I to understand that, in this context, "got a good reason / for taking the easy way out" should refer to suicide? Oh cool, George was always my favorite. An impressively straight cover, that bit. Oh SHIT, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is my favorite Beatles song or at least my favorite to play super loud. Good effort, but the only real contribution is the guttural "she's so". I'm surprised a bassist/vocalist didn't take a crack at the full song with McCartney's excellent line.
(I listened to the interludes too, I just didn't bother to type them.)
Very goth. A most Christmas-y choice, Rosa.
