Delightful!
"One Step At A Time" - Pretty straightforward blues, but with accordion. What is this harmonica at 1:50? It's clearly accordion up to that point. At 2:30 both accordion and harmonica are playing, but there is no credited harmonica on this album according to Wikipedia. Too bad, because it's a very cool combo.
"Sa M'Appel Fou (They Call Me Crazy)" - Rollicking, but I sure can't speak any version of French. Let's take a moment to note the percussion, specifically the rub board or frottoir invented by Clifton Chenier and played by his brother with bottle openers. Also, traded solos from sax and accordion.
"Quelque Chose Sur Mon Idee (Something On My Mind)" - Slow dance. Again, just love the rub board, it's such a unique sound.
"Ride 'Em Cowboy" - Yackety Sax tone instead of your regular supporting sax.
"Ma Mama Ma Dit (My Mama Told Me)" - Another kind of dirge. I know have to understand French to know what these lyrics are saying. That rub board, really, so great.
"Je Me Reveiller Ce Matin (I Woke Up This Morning)" - I swear at first I thought this was a cover of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore". Actually it's two songs with different tempos which swap back and forth occasionally. The bass is a little higher in the mix and it's a party.
Hmm there's 13 songs in this YouTube playlist and only 11 listed on the Wikipedia article. The album cover says "the complete session" so I guess we're hearing a re-pressing. It's all good..
"I May Be Wrong" - The sax again takes the solo. Slightly different lyrics that the expect "won't be down always / sun's gonna shine in my backdoor someday".
"Take Off Your Dress" - Sexy title, and this one is really getting down with the guitar and bass. Electric guitar licks aside, the accordion is center stage here and the sax is very much supporting. I think this is my favorite track so far, actually, and it wasn't on the original release.
"Allons A Grand Coteau" - This has a distinctly different sound. Simple beat sounds like it's played on a cardboard box, rub board getting down, accordion hopping.
"Je Suis En Recolteur (I'm A Farmer)" - Another slow number, so let's think about the vocals. It's soulful, and I like my party singer to have enthusiastic yelps like on the fast tracks. OK it's in French, and the English isn't the most intelligible. The second verse here proclaims being a cotton picker, potato digger, cane(?) cutter.
"Ti Na Na" - Heavy bass on this one. Being in love with a married woman is a classic. Sax and accordion play off each other.
"Come Go Along With Me" - Guitar picks in the intro, and the uncredited harmonica is back. No accordion appears until 1:30. Who plays this harmonica? Well Google says Clifton played it on other records, so I must assume it's him playing here. Does that mean he was playing harmonica and accordion simultaneously on track 1?? Sure they could have multi-tracked it, but I wonder because that would be awesome.
"Bogalusa Boogie" - It's a sweet little boogie already. Bass solo! The tempo is slowly turning up and it's very cool. Whoa, the Bogalusa Boogie!
