It's almost Record Store Day. The theme this month is independent record labels - any record released on an indie label is fair game. There are a lot of to choose from. Two nominations each until the poll goes up late next week. ETA please be sure to name the label too!

Ben Grimm and MrsLangdonAlger can you also state the indie labels your nominations are on? Sorry, I forgot to say that in the original post. And Ben, are you sure you want to split the vote with the same band twice?

It was a Chicago independent record label that was the first to release American cuts of two bands you may have heard of: The Beatles and the Four Seasons. Vee-Jay Records was founded in the 50s by a husband-wife team who knew the business and had an ear for what the kids liked, respectively. They had some great R&B success even before the 60s. Vee-Jay released the first Lightnin' Hopkins album to be called "Lightnin' Strikes" in 1962. Another album by that name came out on another indie label, Universal, a few years later, by which time Vee-Jay was about to file bankruptcy because someone was racking up gambling debt with company money.

Let's talk selling out!
Green Day – Kerplunk (1991) – The band's last with venerable punk label Lookout! Records before signing to a major and moving on to much bigger things
Jawbreaker – 24 Hour Revenge Therapy (1994) – The band's last with Tupelo Recording Company/Communion Records before signing to a major and imploding under the weight of expectations

I had the great Americana label Arhoolie in mind, but in browsing their lists I came on someone whose best-reviewed records were elsewhere. Any fans of Treme here?
Rebirth Brass Band, "Do Whatcha Wanna" (Mardi Gras Records) 1997. A label so small it didn't make the list above, but they've been going since the 70s.
