Do you remember summer vacation when you were young? For some you maybe went on a big vacation, for others you just hung out with your friends and tried to beat the heat. And some of us maybe were roped into working on the big summer musical. (That was me.)
Phineas and Ferb is essentially about two boys who are trying to figure out how to have a great summer. Phineas even makes this clear in the episode because he points out that at the start of the next school year, they'll be asked what they did during the summer. They need to have a great story when school resumes.
So this is the story of two boys and their friends who are constantly trying to find bigger and better ways to have the best summer ever.
As you can guess from the title of "Rollercoaster," they first build an intense rollercoaster that goes throughout Danville, where they live. (It is part of THE TRI-STATE AREA.) This involves rubber snacks, corkscrews around the interstate and a pit of mud to be overall an awesome rollercoaster that would actually provide plenty of thrills. It's likely not for those with a heart condition.
Their sister, Candace, is bent on ensuring their mother, Linda, actually catches the brothers as they're creating these crazy things that they really shouldn't be doing because of their age. In this episode she actually hunts down her mother at the grocery store to say, "Mom! Phineas and Ferb have built a giant rollercoaster!" Of course, Linda doesn't see the rollercoaster and Candace ends up looking slightly deranged.
The incredible thing about Phineas and Ferb is they still love their sister even though Candace is constantly trying to get them in trouble. In "Candace Loses Her Head," the family decides to visit Mount Rushmore and the boys decide to carve Candace's face into the side of Mount Rushmore. Although Candace spends most of the episode trying to bust her brothers, she ends up being deeply moved by the present. After all, it's better than the previous present they gave her, which was a gorilla in a birthday cake.
As all of that action is going on, Perry, the boys' pet platypus, is busy leading a double life as a secret agent. He is assigned to battle the evil Dr. Doofenshmirtz, who is possibly the most incompetent evil scientist on television. So Perry fights Doof and destroys or grabs a hold of his inventions--called "Inators" starting in "Candace Loses Her Head"--and that results in Phineas and Ferb's creations disappearing, be it the magnet grabbing the rollercoaster in part one of this episode or lava destroying Candace's stone face. (I know this is a cartoon, but would that even work out?)
Ultimately these first two episodes serve to establish the characters and the idea of the show. It's funny and enjoyable, but because it's so early in the series, there's not much else to say.
STRAY THOUGHTS
-If you notice as you watch the series, the voices of the characters evolve, mainly for Phineas and Isabella.
-There's a kid in the audience at the rollercoaster unveiling who looks like Irving, a character introduced later whom I have many, many thoughts on.
-Candace is like the Venus de Milo, but with arms and hands!
-Mr. Slushy Burger has a worker exchange program. Huh. Although it's also implied Danville isn't too far from Mount Rushmore.
-When Isabella showed up at the site for them carving Candace's face into Mount Rushmore I thought, "Wait, did she ditch her Fireside Girls?" Thankfully, she didn't.
-Running jokes and lines introduced in these episodes: "I know what we're gonna do to day!", "What'cha doin'?", Ferb doesn't talk much, "Aren't you a little young for x?" "Yes, yes I am," "Curse you Perry the Platypus!", Inators.
-Ferb's Lines: "They're the only mammals to lay eggs" and "Well it was definitely better than the gorilla in the cake."
