Tiger Woods might actually be back!
I know this is the baseball thread, but no way an actual golf thread will get posts.

I like the idea of an ace pitcher/hitter double threat, which is why I'm pretty mad that they're going to throw Shohei Ohtani to be eaten alive by major-league talent this early in the season. Dude NEEDS a few months in AAA. Hell, maybe AA for a while to shake off the rust. He doesn't look remotely ready for this. Hope they don't break him.

Happy Opening Day everyone. It's the most wonderful time of the year! Happy Opening Day! Yay Baseball!! WOOOOO! Edit. And Yay! Dbacks win! Undefeated! Dbacks are currently in 1st place, using run differential as the tie breaker. Works for me! I love Opening Day!

I honestly hope that this is just going to be one of those temporary things where the hotshot flamethrower learns some control and temperance one of these seasons. As soon as he started getting those first-inning jitters it all seemed too familiar. C'mon guy. You're too talented for this. Ubaldo's a free agent now isn't he? Sigh.

I don't know about Gray. It seems like he should have it figured out by now. Could just be opening day jitters. Or, he could go the way of many previous Rockies pitchers, and let pitching at Coors Field mess with his mind to the point where he's useless. (At least I assume that is what happens.)

With the few exceptions being 2-3, sometimes four good seasons each from Astacio, U. Jimenez, Cook, Francis, Chacin, Jennings and De La Rosa (and that's really about it in twenty-five years of existence)... yes, that is usually what happens.

OH, and D-Dweller, welcome to the Humidor Club. All of your pre-humidor offensive talent will now be viewed as inherently disqualified for the Hall of Fame, although it does make Randy Johnson look like even more of a badass.

Randy Johnson is my favorite player of all time. He was awesome. I mean, one way to stop players from hitting HRs is to strike them all out.
Well, 2 Dbacks-Rockies games down, only about 100 or so left. At least it feels that way.
Rockies starters looked like garbage in the first 2 games. Their bullpen looks pretty good though. Looks better than the Dbacks bullpen, which is still a mystery, for the 3rd season in a row.
Arenado looks just as good as last season. Parra's hair is crazy. Story still K's a lot. Offense may be a bit worse than last season, but should still make them competitive. Just gotta find a way to not have starters blow the game.
And Nick Ahmed laughs in the face of your humidor! WTF? Ahmed can hit a HR with the humidor in effect? YCPB.
Corbin looked okay. Ray had a truly WTF pitching performance tonight. Velo is noticeably down. It's still March, so not going to panic just yet. But, that is concerning. He was also clearly having a mechanical issue. Kept missing in the exact same spot. Maybe he's not ready for the season to start.
Interested to see Greinke pitch tomorrow. Everyone here is a bit worried about him.
Finally, LOL Dodgers! Lose 1-0 two games in a row. To HRs by Panik. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Wait, one more thing, I'm going to a game on my birthday! Just got gifted a ticket for the Apr 19 game vs the Giants. May be my first game of the season. Yay!

My opinion about the first three days of MLB is that I think it's fucking horseshit that the sport isn't called basesball. Because there's like three different bases and homeplate. And all the stadiums have to follow those rules, even if they're allowed to make the field whatever size they want it, they have to have three bases and a homeplate. So the name "baseball" is egregiously false advertising when you think about it.

This just in: Clayton Kershaw is officially human.
2 HRs off Kershaw tonight by lefties. That has to be encouraging to the rest of the teams in the league.
Take that, humidor!
One of those HRs off Kershaw was hit by Daniel Descalso. #YCPB
Edited to add: This is only the 2nd series of the season, but it's already memorable. Last night was a 15 inning game, which featured the Dodgers blowing a 3 run lead with 2 outs and no one on in the bottom of the 9th. Both teams used their entire bullpen. Jeff Mathis got the winning hit. LOL. If he hadn't, he was going to come in and pitch the 16th. Kinda disappointed we didn't get to see that.
Today's game had Kerhsaw giving up HRs to lefties, and the Dodgers walking in 3 runs in the 7th. The Dodgers walked the Dbacks relief pitcher who was trying to bunt. Granted, it was Jorge de la Rosa, who used to be a starter. But still.
Wacky stuff, I tell you.
Oh Dbacks, why can you beat the Dodgers in the regular season, but not in the playoffs?

Just saw a golfer's ankle pop out of place, and then he popped it back into place and walked off. This is the baseball thread, Matt. May as well talk about golf here. Can't really generate enough for a golf thread. And golf is just about as slow a sport as baseball. At least it must be according to Manfred. So glad to get an alert today that Tim Tebow hit a HR in AA. (I got a notification for this?) Watched Adam Wainwright pitch the Cardinals opener today. Sadly, he looks like he just doesn't have the stuff anymore. I'm getting old! I hate seeing players I've followed for so long have such a weak game. Booo. Although, good for the Dbacks. Dbacks now 6-1 to start the season! Woo! They have zero power. Goldschmidt has 2 hits all season so far. Lamb is on the DL. Souza's on the DL. They're winning with small ball. It is weird. Chris Owings is suddenly a good hitter? What? I have no idea how they are winning. But, I'll take it. Goldy has to start hitting sometime. Lamb will come back. Going to have a real offense at some point. Right? Robbie Ray is still an extremely frustrating pitcher. Looks great one inning, can't find the strike zone in the next inning. Aaaah! Line tonight: 6IP, 2H, 1R, 9K, 5BB. Sigh. His fastball was all over the place. He was having noticeable mechanical errors. The booth was able to illustrate the problem in the 4th or 5th inning using replay. Hello, trainers? If the tv hosts can see what is happening, can't you fix it? Gah. It is so frustrating. Every damn start. This game notably featured two players achieving the Golden Sombrero: DeJong of the Cardinals and Avila for the Dbacks. MLB scheduled an off day for these teams on Friday. And it is supposed to snow in St. Louis this weekend. Would bet at least one, maybe both, of this weekend's games won't happen. Snowstorm! LOL. It is 90+ degrees in Phoenix.

My MLB team for the year might just be the Angels. Trout and Ohtani? Hard for me not to love.

My MLB team for the year might just be the Angels. Trout and Ohtani? Hard for me not to love. I'd be for this, because I really want to see Trout in the playoffs. I mean, who wouldn't? Anyway, there was some terrible umpiring in the DBacks/Cardinals series this weekend. DBacks got a call in their favor where the Umpire called a Cardinal pitch right down the middle a ball. It was insane. Today, the ump twice called strike 3 on what was clearly ball 4 against the Dbacks. Later in the game, the umpire called a strikeout against the Cardinals where all three "strikes" were balls. The Dbacks manager got ejected, and threw a fit over the umpires "letting Yadier Molina decide balls/strikes". He used some very bad language which Molina objected to. Molina shoved an umpire and actually tried to take a swing at Lovullo. The benches cleared. It was ridiculous. This had nothing to do with Molina's pitch framing. The umpire was terrible, and continued to make terrible calls for and against the DBacks. Later in the game was that strikeout of a Cardinals player where none of the pitches were in the strike zone. This is ridiculous. #RobotUmpsNow

The Mets hot start is vaguely stressful. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. What's most remarkable is that their fielding has somehow gotten even worse than last year (with the exception of Lagares).

That story about whats-his-face getting chewed out for bunting against the shift a week or two ago still cracks me up. Why the hell WOULDN'T he bunt? It's not a no-no being pitched. Suck it up!

Even if it WAS a no-no, it's not much of an achievement if you get it because everyone was too busy playing the right way to try to break it up by getting a hit. On the other hand, the guy who leaned in to get hit by a pitch three years ago to break up Scherzer's perfect game was an asshole.

Ha! I'm not crazy! A baseball writer ran the data and found out the Dbacks are 2nd in baseball right now at getting pitches outside the strike zone called strikes against them. (The Astros are 1st.) I really hope this stops being so bad. That writer found almost 15% of pitches outside the zone are getting called strikes on the Dbacks. That's not an insignificant amount. That's more like 1-2 blown calls per *inning*.
Anyway, other than that, thank you baseball gods! It appears Paul Goldschmidt is finally back! Through start of play last Monday, Goldschmidt had been batting .100. As in 3-30. It was getting painful to watch. Finally had a breakout series against the Giants. Hit a couple HRs, a few XBH. Oh happy day!
In non-Dbacks news, how about that brawl between San Diego and Colorado. It featured flowing hair almost as great as the Bryce Harper brawl video from last season. It didn't have the great helmet throw like that one, but it did feature the pitcher throwing his glove. I grade it a "B" for baseball brawls.

Why the hell did so many teams try to play this weekend in horrible weather? That Cubs-Braves game, while entertaining as hell, should not have been played. That was ridiculous. Seeing Mike Trout standing there in the snow was also amusing and yet wrong.
The Dbacks leave Los Angeles with an array of crazy happenings behind them. There was the fluky Dodger hit in Friday night's games that turned a surefire double play into a 2 RBI single. There was the DBack 3-run HR that turned into a 2 RBI single when the HR hitter passed the runner on the basepath. There was Jarrod Dyson getting a pitch called a "foul ball" on him that never came close to his bat. Today's game featured an inexplicable pitcher meltdown and Clayton Kershaw getting at least 7 pitches out of the strikezone getting called strikes. Umps, Clayton Kershaw doesn't need help, okay?
Some of this was fluky bad luck and some of it was bad umpiring. That foul ball call on Dyson is especially egregious. Seriously, wtf umps? Foul ball? Whaaaaat??? But, the Dbacks won the series 2-1.
Dbacks went 6-3 on that road trip. Now have a 5.5 lead on the Dodgers, and are 11-4 overall. Gotta get as many games ahead of the Dodgers while they can.
Still on track to go to Thursday's game. Yay!

At least none of the teams this weekend decided to play on a completely frictionless field in a physics textbook after being magically shrunk down until the players were only millimeters tall.

Oh my god, Bartolo Colon almost pitched a perfect game. That would have been amazing. Houston should have just let him do it. It was the 8th inning, for god's sake. Houston doesn't need that win.
Yeah, yeah, normally I'm someone who mocks pitchers who complain about bunts to break up no-hitters, but it was *Bartolo Colon* pitching a perfect game in the 8th inning. Don't let him walk you, idiot.
Ah well. It was fun while it lasted.

With a bunch of teams having strong starts this year, someone I know asked "What is the MLB record for consecutive series wins?"
Not only do I not know the answer to that, several minutes of googling did not provide me the answer. Is this an uncalculated, unknown stat in baseball? Is that even possible?
