I didn't think MLB would even be able to start the season, so getting one week out of it already exceeds my expectations.
Also, the cardboard fans are CREEPY

Yes, I find the stuffed animals less creepy than the cardboard humans

I haven't seen that, and probably(?) don't want to.

They were clothed but, no, you probably don't want to.

Creepier than the bleachers of stuffed animals they use here in Korea? OMG, I love this!!! I so wish MLB teams were doing this! The worst so far, in my opinion, was the digital fans Fox put on its TV broadcasts.

Honestly, I find the stuffed animals to be kinda cute.

For Toronto's games (in Buffalo, supposedly), you can pay to have a life-sized cardboard cut-out of yourself in the seats, and then they'll send it to when the season's over.

I’ve been wondering how all the teams have been picking who to have cutouts of in the stands. I figured it was a mix of paid fan submitted pics and possibly of employee friends and family. I’m surprised teams are only filling out the 150 or so primo behind home plate seats and resisting the urge to sell more seats for cutouts.

I put on my Chipper Jones T-shirt jersey on Monday to represent Atlanta, and figured I could get away with wearing it again on Tuesday. But it's just superstition, I can chuck it in the wash on Wednesday, right? www.espn.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=401246382Now that it's clean again, I hopefully only need it for two more days.

I don't even care THAT much about the sign-stealing thing but holy Jesus, fuck the Astros. If they limp into the playoffs with a losing record and win the World Series it'll be the ultimate asterisk next to this already mis-begotten chimæra of a season.

Ha! No. Thankfully, the correct team won. Go Rays!

I went into a local Mexican place tonight and told the manager that I was afraid for them after Spring Training was cancelled. This place is 2 blocks from a Spring Training park, in a major tourist part of town. It is always packed during February and March.
I don't know if the owners are not telling the employees what is happening, or if the owners aren't following the news, but this manager said to me, "Well, it was just pushed back. It starts in two weeks."
Um, honey, no. I told him, "No, the two sides are still in a lockout, and it looks like a deal is not going to get done soon. They are going to have to start cancelling *regular season* games if they don't have an agreement by tonight. I don't think Spring Training is happening."
He said, "Well, we still have a ton of reservations, so it looks like people are coming anyway."
Wow, that is a lot of optimism.

Also a dire sign that should be ingrained into every owner (or at least every owner that's driving this*) that even people whose business in theory should be partial baseball dependent (or at least heavily impacted) are sort of checked out. Reversing baseball's long term slide in interest should be viewed as a long term crisis they need to reverse rather than accelerate. * I suspect there are at least a handful of owners that DGAF about other owners stated concerns about smaller markets or actual concerns about maximizing net revenues without having to actually invest in farm systems/resigning homegrown talent. These would be the consortium owning the Dodgers and possibly Steve Cohen of the Mets now that he's a year in and no longer needs to hold back spending. If the bulk of owners push for luxury tax penalties to be replaced by draft penalties I suspect we might start seeing leeks about a split.

Reversing baseball's long term slide in interest should be viewed as a long term crisis they need to reverse rather than accelerate. This is not the case with Spring Training in Phoenix. Business is BOOMING here. Revenues have increased every year pre-pandemic. Spring Training is big business here. A study by the university's school of business said Spring Training probably brings in over $100M just to bars and restaurants in Feb/March. Hotels also made a huge amount of money during Spring Training. The local cities are complaining that MLB doesn't formally sponsor Spring Training, so there is no relief offered by the League if it gets cancelled. The League/Owners are taking a completely ridiculous stance, and the reports on the scene are still reporting wide gaps. Passan's article at ESPN yesterday is great at depicting the insane stance the league/owners are taking. And MLB started the day offering more threats to the players rather than any compromises. Ugh, Manfred is so awful.

At least Selig at least seemed to genuinely like baseball With the possible exception of Adam Silver in the NBA, are there any professional sport commissioners that aren’t universally despised by everyone from fans to players to even journalists?

At least Selig at least seemed to genuinely like baseball With the possible exception of Adam Silver in the NBA, are there any professional sport commissioners that aren’t universally despised by everyone from fans to players to even journalists? Yeah, I think Adam Silver is the only one who isn't hated. I loathed Selig, and I can't believe we got someone even worse as his successor. Manfred really does seem to hate baseball. He is getting slammed by baseball journalists, even ones who've been around a while. That was a completely scathing piece by Passan on ESPN. www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/33362477/inside-self-inflicted-crisis-boiling-mlb-lockout-deadline-arrivesLOL'd when MLB fired Ken Rosenthal, allegedly for negative comments he made about Manfred, so then he turned around and wrote this: theathletic.com/3078169/2022/01/19/rosenthal-the-pressure-is-mounting-mlb-cannot-afford-to-lose-games-this-season/Quote: The reporters I follow on Twitter are saying MLB is sometimes proposing offers that are WORSE than what the players have now. Reporters are saying today that MLB is still refusing to listen to the players, and that MLB has offered its so-called "best offer", which is of course nowhere close to what the players want. And here I thought Bettman was pro sports' worst commissioner. No way. At this point, I wonder what would happen if Congress intervened. Can't decide whether this would make it better or worse for the players.

While between the bad faith negotiating and the massive downsizing/disinvestment in the minors, the incitements to getting the anti-trust exemption revoked are stronger than ever before. But with baseball's declining popularity I don't know how much of a threat a rival league would be realistically.
