This plan may change. Over at the AV Club WOT, I've been posting season 3 reviews, and I'm currently at the finale. I'm going to be revisiting 6 season 1 episodes in between seasons 3 and 4 and writing a post about season 2 as a whole. I'm thinking I'll put up the stuff here from seasons 1 and 2 first, then follow with the rest (including reviews of every episode in seasons 4 and 5). Also, I only have half the season 3 reviews: 7-13. If any of you would like to contribute or fill in the blanks, I'll make you a moderator.
Here are the season 1 episodes I plan to cover. Feel free to suggest changes to the list. -Pilot -Eyes Wide Open -Full Hearts -I Think We Should Have Sex -Mud Bowl -State
Anyway, expect the pilot review to drop sometime this weekend, unless any of you would like me to post my season 3 stuff first. It's all fairly complicated, so here's a picture of Coach Taylor calling time out to distract you.

Maybe I'll offer to review an episode if I think I can do it without being an emotional mess, but more likely I'll look at the DVDs and decide that I can't just pick one out of context. Regardless, I'll be here and try not to be obnoxious (no promises).

I'd love to have you do a review, and obnoxious is good. Would you like me to make you a moderator?

Pear I'd say to hold off for now. I'd rather undercommit than overcommit, I think, and the next month is going to be very busy for me with school. I'll let you know if I change my mind, though.

I have not seen one second of this show, and am looking forward to geeking out all over it.

I'm only going to review a part of season one, though; I'll probably do an open thread if you want to talk about the rest of the episodes. It'll be kind of hard to keep up with me; I'll be skipping over a bunch.

I will participate. FNL is my favorite TV show of all time, and I have all of the DVDs. See?

Look, we all wish that writers' strike didn't happen, but it's time to move on, and not keep carrying a torch for that lost 'second season' that we never got. I'm disappointed, too, but let's not get carried away and pretend there was a 'second' season; I'm sorry we had to skip a season and go right to Smash and Street not being part of the Panthers any more, too. But the truth is that there ain't no second season, and there never was. We're probably better off, who knows what that second season would have been like. *Closes cafe shutters, which read "Friday Night Lights Season 2"*

I can't really digest this information unless it's preceded by a "Let me tell you somethin'".

Lemme tell you how this is gonna go:
We're gonna watch FNL. We're all gonna fall in love with Coach an' Mrs. Coach. We're gonna swoon over Riggins' hair, an' Tyra's butt. We'll laugh. We'll cry. We'll say "Texas Forever", an' almost mean it. We're gonna do this together, as a team. As one. Ready?
Clear Eyes, Full Hearts.

With no malice at all, I have to ask...
So many folk I respect adore this show. My problem is; I despise team sports intensely, the lionization of those who play them incomprehensible and the fanaticism of those who support them truly scary.
Is there any point in me even trying to watch this?

Is there any point in me even trying to watch this? Yeah, because on the one hand it shows some of the nastier implications of team sports culture (though I'll grant it often basically is like these people bad, our people good, it's not blind to this), and on the other hand the heart of the school is a drama about a small town in Texas (centered by the best marriage on TV).

Douay-Rheims-Challoner is right about the show being clear about its sympathetic and unsympathetic characters, for better or worse. Still, FNL is largely character-driven and the sports aspect of it is more of a backdrop than anything. Some of the best characters and storylines in the show have very little if anything to do with football, and while it's still a television show, it doesn't shy away from the negative aspects of sports. It might not be for everyone, but I don't think I can really tell you more without simply encouraging you to watch a few episodes and see what you think.

There are some exceptions to this rule, though. I could argue that Buddy Garrity, Lyla Garrity, Tyra, Tim Riggins, Billy Riggins, and hell, even JD McCoy shift from sympathetic to unsympathetic or vice versa at varying points in the series. But, Post-Lupin, I would definitely recommend it to anyone, even those that despise team sports. It's really great drama, and football basically just plays as the thing that ties these people in this town together. As a born and raised Texan, I can say with certainty that the show gets a lot of the little small town Texas details 100% correct. I would find your perspective on that quite interesting, seeing as how you're from across the pond. Cheers!

Honestly, you might be better off watching if you're not a football fan, since the actual football tends toward the "entirely out of the realm of possibility."

I'm not much into team sports, and American football probably least of all, but I really like the series. I think it is softer on the toxicity of the town's football obsession than, say, the original book was, but it certainly spends some time on it, and fundamentally it's just a really good drama about people in a small town.

Watching FNL for the actual football is kind of like watching 70's / 80's porno for the acting and stories.
