"What is this? Why are you doing this? We've got new Doctor Who and classic Doctor Who already at the AV Club!"
Hi to you too. I'm not trying to take over for Christopher Bahn or Alasdair Wilkins, I promise.
I asked our esteemed admin to create this section not so much for the show, but for the spinoff media it has produced. Over the last year, I've been diving into the expanded universe of Doctor Who via Big Finish's audio dramas and the various novels based on Doctor Who. You may have seen me talking about them over at the Old Country in the comment sections of the new and classic Who reviews, as well as the occasional Pop-Culture Weekend. I thought it would be a good idea to have a place where I could save those in a more permanent and easy-to-find fashion, as well as expanding on what have been until now fairly brief thoughts.
"So you must be a Doctor Who expert."
I am nothing of the sort. I am missing huge gaps of the classic series. I am only now going through Tom Baker's era, because he terrified me as a child. The only Doctors I've seen the whole of are 3, 8, 9, 10, and 11. I didn't start watching Doctor Who in earnest until the 2005 reboot. I've watched bits of everyone since then. I may not pick up on various bits of continuity because of this. Please feel free to fill me in on things I have missed.
"What are these subject lines?"
Right, well in order for me to cram in as much information into the subjects, I'm going to be using some shorthand. So if you see something on the main page like "DWA MR 058: The Harvest", you'll know that means "hey, there is a new review up of Big Finish's Doctor Who audio from their main range." If it's "DWN EDA 07: Kursaal", that will mean "the seventh novel in the Eighth Doctor's Adventure series" (that one in particular will also signify "christ what a tedious book"). So, to help you out:
ACRONYMS
DWA: Doctor Who audio
DWN: Doctor Who novel
MR: the main range of Doctor Who stories by Big Finish
EDA: the Eighth Doctor's solo series of audios or books (which have frustratingly been given the same name)
CC: Companion Chronicles
(I will be adding to this list as I go along, if I decide to branch into the Gallifrey series or Sarah Jane Smith's TV/audio series or K9 or the comics or whatever. But I think this should get me started.)
"Do you have a schedule?"
I'm going to attempt to write one thing a week and post it on Tuesdays. Novels will be less frequent than audios, just because they take longer to consume.
