John Oliver's 'I will not correctly identify a Latin American country' never gets old.

While I wish his reporting on the Pope's visit was a bit more substantial than just joking about Brian Williams' touch obsession and that weird Congressman's water theft, the end of the main segment gave me some hope for humanity.

The Prighlofone It's just Oliver being consistent; he usually only gives the major news subjects of the day a couple of minutes coverage before his in-depth stuff. Also that ending was the sweetest fucking thing.

Most recent episode of Last Week Tonight began with John Oliver implying his first story would be about Justin Bieber's penis, before promising his viewers he wouldn't do that to them and immediately launched into Syria. It was hard - if unfair - for me to not think of the first segue Trevor Noah did on the Daily Show, where he implied his very first bit would be on Syria before shifting instead to Pope Francis' American visit.

I'll say what I did on FB: that meme segment was my fucking salvation. I've been thinking about how much this aggravates me for a long time and I couldn't have said it better. I'm even starting to see the smart people I'm friends with fall for the same old shit (NO, Donald Trump did not say anything about the Republican Party being "the stupid party" on FOX News in 1998 - a time before the channel became the truly iconic conservative parade that it is now). I'm all for sharing actual quotes of wisdom, but we cannot simply reduce history and its most important people this way, even if especially if you have a hunch that your beliefs vindicate their ideals. You cannot believe every single thing you see on the Internet! We cannot tolerate the constant dissemination of misinformation and continue to complain about the country going down the tubes as if we have no part to play in it! From now on, EVERY time I see a stupid reposted quote that people did not check Snopes or even Wikiquote for, I will be rewatching it, so I expect it to ascend to "Gangnam Style" level views in the next couple of weeks.

Yes, online daily fantasy sports is obviously gambling, but I see no difference between that and playing the stock market: money wagered on the performance of independent, external organizations news about said organizations used to speculate exploitation of system by technology users and predictive algorithms majority of money won by professional players/traders annoying commercials (Draft Kings/Fanduel, E-Trade)
I suppose the stock market isn't a zero-sum game like daily fantasy is, although I don't know enough about the latter to be sure, but I wish John had highlighted this.

I'm actually surprised they didn't consider this comparison in the piece. Most shows, sure, but this show I would expect to go there.

Well, no TTP piece to round out the season, which disappointed me a bit - but a very satisfying finale nonetheless.

Well-done commentary on the refugee situation, but I'm disappointed they spent a boatload of time on such an old saw as the penny. Even 60 Minutes has done that one! No new episodes until Feb. 14th? Weeeak.

No new episodes until Feb. 14th? Weeeak. It's gonna be a cold, lonely winter for late night viewers; as their King is in hibernation.

The funniest and angriest I've seen John in a long, long time. This episode was a Godsend. I very much needed the laughs after watching Lady Gaga's Oscar performance. And the strategy involved with how he ended it...it was Machiavellian, it was marvelous, it was genius.
The only thing I could have possibly asked for to make it better was an anti-Trump song, featuring some of the biggest musicians of the day who are horrified to see him overtake the polls (obviously including Mac Miller.)

OK, so why didn't he do a segment on Trump last season? Might have made more of a difference.

Lone Locust of the Apocalypse He had a contempt for the media interest in Trump. He said on Colbert last year he had absolutely no interest in covering him (which is why Trump called his show boring and erroneously claimed he'd turned down an offer to guest on it.) Oliver's made his focus tackling Serious Issues in longform last night fashion, and I guess Trump only became sufficiently serious for him after he became apparently unstoppable.

Meaning this segment will probably change nothing and basically amounts to preaching to the choir.
