I, ummmm......... haven't been yet. What should I get? Most of their pastas are made in house and very seasonal. If there's any kind of ravioli or tortelloni on the menu get it. Their charcuterie board is pretty damned tasty. They often have burrata on the menu too; snap that bad boy up. I haven't been wild about their meat entrees (not bad, just not as eyes-roll-back good as the apps and pastas are). Gemma does sound neat and the kind of place that's right in my sweet spot. Unfortunately I don't think we'll get to go before we move.

So Belly & Trumpet wasn't quite what I was expecting, but good nonetheless. I had thought it was more upscale bar food, small plates, etc. While they did have small plates, alot of those were salads and soups. Then alot of mains. I had some oysters, then foie gras torchon. My wife had a hangar steak with a kimchi omelet. Our guests had the lobster and pork belly, and the burger. The burger was ungodly decadent. But I could see it getting old fast, it was so rich.

Man, just got back from a fun little outing to El Come Taco, Fitzhugh Ave.'s answer to Mexico City. Lengua taco, cabeza (beef cheek and head meat) taco, and a deluxe with meat, cactus, and grilled onions, all for $7 and I'm stuffed to the gills. The green salsa is a straight up avocado/hot pepper combo, delicious. Of course, everything was delicious.

Had an impromptu date night last night and decided to go to Blind Butcher. We should have tried to go Friday night; I didn't realize how big that place is. Had a very similar meal to yours, Snape: the snack platter to start, then a sausage platter, then poutines. That's right; poutine, plural. My wife very foolishly advocated we each get our own since I wanted the duck one and she wanted the pork belly. I lovvved the duck poutine. The gravy had that nice roasted flavor that reminded me immediately of fall and Thanksgiving. The pork belly poutine was also good, but the gravy was oddly sweet. The sausage platter had bacon bratwurst, brisket and cheddar, and merguez sausages. I liked the brisket sausage the best: it was like a barbecue platter rolled up into one. But all three were good. The merguez was wonderfully spiced and exotic and the bratwurst had me longing for a trip to Wisconsin. Drank Frankonia Kolsch with the meal; it had its usual effect of making me just want to lie down on the table. Very good place.

Even if it wasn't the best of the three, I'm jealous that they had merguez that night. Merguez is one of the best things ever, but there's no where to buy it consistently in the area that I've found. I think you can special order it through Central Market. I heard that at least. Between your self-described loginess from the beer and all that food, it's a wonder you made it out the door at all.

One weird thing about Dallas is, there isn't many great Middle Eastern/Arabic/Mediterranean markets that I'm aware of. Yeah, there's little mom and pops, but if you've ever been to Phoenicia in Austin or Houston (one of many reasons I'm so pumped to move there) you'd know what I'm talking about. Where they bake the flatbreads on site, they have a halal butcher, and make their own merguez and other sausages, for instance. I can't believe Phoenicia hasn't move up here yet. Set up shop in Richardson and just watch the money rake in.

Dallas has tons of Pakistani, Indian, and East Asian grocery stores, but nothing Turkish or Lebanese.

Here's the best market I've been to. More Lebanese than Turkish, and more around dry goods and imports and stuff, not so much on meats, sausages, etc. I think they just did a big overhaul, so maybe it's better in that regard. I hadn't been there in a few years.

I'll be there ASAP.

I didn't mention that I went to FT33 last weekend (Father's Day weekend) for my birthday. It was really good. I know when they opened they were really touting their molecular gastronomy leanings, but they've consciously walked that part back over the last year, and there was almost no trace of it on the menu. Started with the enormous charcuterie platter, all housemade, with many interesting pickles on the plate. I had a field lettuces with ham vinaigrette salad, with a whole poached egg that had been coated in breadcrumbs and deep fried, and then finished with a pork belly and skate main. No complaints about anything. Great, fun evening.

Also went to Jack's Mack grill for a work outing last week. This is on Preston, south of Bush, in the same shopping center as Lavendou. It's a funky place. Total stoner food (chicken and biscuits pizza, for instance). Lots of good beer and house-infused liquors available. Seems out of place for where it is, but it's getting good crowds, which is nice.
Also went to Sushi on McKinney's new location in Plano, on Parker and 75. It's BYOB for now, unfortunately. The crowds have definitely not found this place yet. We were there on a Friday night and only one other couple came in. Very sad. I know they were a Dallas institution before they had to move due to skyrocketing rent at their old location, it's a pity they haven't been followed up to Plano yet. Give them some love if you're in the mood for sushi; everything we had was great.

Going to Blind Butcher tomorrow night with friends, assuming we can get in. Excited. The place is deceptively huge. Provided you get there in the 6 pm hour you'd probably get a seat or not have to wait long. Also, I didn't realize the Food Truck Yard was right next door too.

Yeah, Ron Howard Voice let us know how you like it. I doubt you'll have trouble getting in. I pretty much loved the place. I've been wanting to check out the Truck Yard as well, even though I hate Jason Boso. Seems like a fun place to bring the bebe.

Dallasites: this goes back to the eighties, but... Do you remember a restaurant called The Dixie House? I just remember it being near the hospital that my grandfather worked at, and it had deep fried corn on the cob, which I still haven't found anywhere else.

Did you have an opinion about aught-era Cowboy Chicken? Their chicken now? No opinion on what they're putting out now, but when I had Cowboy Chicken 4-5 years ago is was pretty tasty, if a little greasy. The real star for all at the table was the twice baked potato sidedish. I think they're famous for that as much as the chicken. Anyway, obviously didn't make a huge impression, because I was less than 10 minutes from one for the last 4 years, and I never visited. Not once.

Going to Blind Butcher tomorrow night with friends, assuming we can get in. Excited. Did you go? Oops! I forgot to post before going to France. Sorry. Yes, and it was not perfectly even, but at its best very, very good. Its best was the brisket cheddar sausage - we ordered seconds and still wanted more. An English banger was pretty good, too. The poutine my friends settled on was the shrimp poutine with white wine instead of gravy, which is mighty peculiar, but still pretty tasty. I think I got whichever beer was on $3 special that night, which wasn't a great decision, and the interior was very very very loud, but still a fun meal.

Ron Howard Voice Go to Javier's, tell him Zach says "hi" (he's my uncle). Ceviche or grilled quail Pepper steak or Snapper Veracruz Chocolate kahlua cake, or crepas de cajeta, washed down with Cafe Pierre. The black bean and tortilla soups also make great openers, and it's my grandmother's flan recipe on the menu (it's really funny to eat with her, and hear her tell EVERYONE within earshot that it's her recipe. Everyone. Multiple times.). Filete de Cantinflas is a cheese-stuffed steak that, while delicious (back in the seventies, whenever Led Zep played Dallas, Robert Plant would always make sure he got some), is just too rich for my blood. The smoked chicken is tasty, but usually too dry. Every now and again, there will be cabrito on the menu. It's rare, but a total score.) Also, please wear something nicer than bluejeans! Doesn't have to be a tux, but it's kinda fancy.
