Eggs Benedict is my greatest weakness, so you nearly killed me with the thought of BBQ Eggs Benedict. Jesus. It seems that potato cakes would kind of be gilding the lily, but since the report is that they were somewhat lacking, that might be for the best. (I'm pissed we won't be in Dallas for a weekend in October, because I want brunch, dammit!) (This thread is my slow-burn, anticipating-long-in-the-future-vacation food porn thread, just as an aside. I'm taking copious notes.) You simply must, must, must do Pecan Lodge. It will change your life. Just don't plan on doing anything except laying on your bed in an ill-advised food coma that evening.

This actually reminds me. Hey, Liz n Dicksgiving, how's your beef game currently? It was you who was slowly reintroducing it to your diet, right? Will you be ready for proper central Texas brisket come September?

Will you be ready for proper central Texas brisket come September? Good recall! The beef game is going quite well -- in fact, Hugs and I were discussing our BBQ plans for our Texas visit and there was much excitement about being up for brisket. I should probably get some lame-ass NJ brisket under my belt before we go, so I can get a real sense of how good the good stuff really is.

Shit!Oak Lawn's Scotch & Sausage turned into a taco joint so quickly, we all noticed immediately. S&S was on my hot list to visit, and now I'll never have the chance. Not that Le Taco Cantina, which replaces it today and is by the same folks, doesn't also look pretty tempting. I hope they kept that tap list.

On one hand though, it did sound a little too much like Blind Butcher, but on the other, an upscale taco lounge ain't exactly bold new territory in Dallas either.

Dallas Observer gave a thumbs-up to my new plan (with my co-critic/friend): we're going to sit in the Cheap Seats at a Rangers ballgame, and try to find food on the upper deck that isn't shitty burgers, gloopy nachos, or gigantic hot dogs.

Ron Howard Voice MarkInTexasThis Sunday the Snapes will be doing brunch at Smoke in Plano. We're also inviting a couple of our friends, but they have a 95% flake rate. Anyway, it's an open invite if either of you care to join. Kinda pricey, but we've been eager to check out the Plano location. We're fans of the original. Time is TBD and open to suggestion. Probably 10 or 11. I belatedly apologize for not getting back with you, but I went to Fort Worth that day, so I wasn't able to make it (as you probably noticed by my absence). I'm still recovering from Mother's Day Brunch (at Stampede, which was excellent), but trying out Smoke (and those eggs Benedict) is definitely on my to-do list now (as is the Blind Butcher. Every report I get from that place makes it sound more and more incredible).

Weekend is shaping up nicely.
Saturday, Memorial Day festivities with the full fam at Sister Snape's house. Carne asada and Baja fish tacos, ceviche, my grilled esquites, guacamole, my homebrew, their homebrew.
Sunday, nine-year anniversary dinner at The Meddlesome Moth. I feel slightly bad for not taking the rare opportunity to try some place new on a liberal budget, but only slightly. The heart wants what it wants, and it wants the Moth. I can already taste the duck wings.
Monday, lunch at the new Cane Rosso in Fairview followed by playtime with Toddler Snape. They have a cool water feature and some nice play areas up there.

Just learned that George W. Bush was at Rise, in Dallas, eating a crab souffle, when Obama called him to tell him that Osama bin Laden was dead.
In related news, I'm going to Rise tonight and the special is crab souffle.

Daniel Vaughn, the BBQ Snob and BBQ Editor for Texas Monthly, on the scene in Dallas: www.dallasobserver.com/restaurants/texas-monthly-barbecue-editor-daniel-vaughn-talks-dallas-cue-7288360It's funny how singularly obsessed we are with Pecan Lodge. Deservedly, but still. Even the interviewer was like, "What's up with that?" Edit: Random side note that didn't deserve its own post. There's a new show on Cooking Channel where a BBQ chef from New York travels to cities known for their BBQ, learns some tips on the local style from a known pitmaster, and then challenges another local pitmaster to a BBQ-off. The debut episode was in Dallas. The New York chef trained with Jack Perkins of Slow Bone and Maple & Motor fame, and then challenges Cousins BBQ from Fort Worth. I thought to post this now, because in the B-roll of people dining at Slow Bone, I'm sure I saw a quick cut of Daniel Vaughn, but then he wasn't used as a talking head or anything. I didn't actually watch the whole episode and don't know who won. Jack Perkins recommends a sparing rub, like a thin single layer instead of caking it on, and more surprisingly to me, a conservative hand with the salt.

Wow, Vaughn lost weight.
Pecan Lodge, like Franklin in Austin, is a convenient bellwether of when things decidedly changed for the better. Not too terribly long ago, you had to drive to Ft. Worth to get good barbecue in Dallas. Then Pecan Lodge and Lockhart opened pretty close in time to each other and things turned around. And everyone started getting in on the game or upping theirs if they were already around.
I wish Vaughn would give Hutchins more love. I don't think he's been since they really set about being a topnotch joint, and he hasn't been to the Frisco outpost yet AFAIK. Plus they also serve dinner.

Saturday 6pm dinner reservation at Underbelly in Houston. Very excited to get their goat and dumplings and some rotating specials. We have to drive to the 'burbs after, so I can't drink too much, but on the other hand, everything on their capacious wine list can be bought to go for 40% off the drinking-it-there price...

Blind Butcher tonight!
We have a date night tonight, and the Mrs. and I were waffling. I figured we'd end up at the Grail, because when do we not, when she e-mails me: "Fuck it, let's do the Butcher."

EDIT: Also if they have Stiegl Radler on tap I bet the Mrs. would like it. My guilty pleasure beer.
