None of you told me there's a Twisted Metal TV show with Stephanie Beatriz!!?? Shame, shame! I watched the first episode of this. Stephanie Beatriz doesn't get to talk, just scowl a bunch. Also, it's "by the makers of Deadpool and Zombieland" so you have Anthony Mackie doing a bunch of self-referential humor, which, you know, your mileage may vary. That was an intentional car joke which let's you the readers of this post know that I too am in on the joke and that we're all just having fun here in this forum post about a tv show based on a 90s car fighting video game. Anyway, the show was fine. Seems like there's a bunch of in-jokes and stuff and maybe the game has a bunch of lore I don't remember, but yeah, it was fine. It could push to annoying a shit pretty quick though.

For anyone that misses the heyday of MXC on Spike, the revival of the original Japanese show “Takeshi’s Castle” is now on Prime.

Taskmaster (S5:E1)
Working back from mature show to "adolescent starting to thrive" show is a touch too much for me. I'm not enjoying this series and may have run out of patience until Season 16 appears.

Most of our way through season 4 of a Friday Night Lights re-watch, and I'm very curious about the demographics of Dillon, Texas. You don't often see a tiny rural burg and...what appears to be East St. Louis just of kind smushed together. Seasons 4-5 are some great TV but finding out that there's been a whole East Dillon, complete with urban blight and gang warfare, just kind of there the whole time does stretch credulity a bit.

I thought Prime had inexplicably added the original series to their library and through the powers of the algorithm thought it might be something I'd want to watch.
I think I'll wait for the reboot of MXC to make fun of the reboot of Takeshi's Castle.

I think this whole season of WWDITS has been disappointingly mid so far, but "Nandor the Relentless" being misheard as "Nandor De Laurentiis" is a fucking chef's kiss of a joke. How long have the writers been sitting on that one?

How long have the writers been sitting on that one? Hahaha that was perfect. I also liked the reveal that Guillermo's been coming by to say goodbye to his mom like, every week. That guy needs some freaking boundaries.

The biggest thing I've learned watching it with subtitles is that the mocking tone of MXC probably wasn't that much of a departure from the source material

Based On A True Story: (Peacock, Season One): Someone noticed true crime podcasts are a thing and thought to make a sitcom based on that. No, not that one--this is different. The basic premise is the killer himself is co-hosting the show through some elaborate blackmail plan cooked up by some friends who crack the case and decide to profit off it rather than turn him in. It was . . . underwhelming. There are a few okay jokes here and there poking fun at the pop cultural obsession with murder (two episodes center around a Las Vegas convention for serial killer "fans"), but in general I found the characters to be too bland and uninteresting and there was too much other shit going on that the whole premise was largely being pushed into the background. The worst aspect was a heavy reliance of "it was just a dream/fantasy sequence" fake-out reveals that got extremely tiresome as the story wore on--by the third one you know what you're watching isn't "real" and you want to just skip back to the narrative.
I haven't heard anything about it getting renewed (although with the whole production industry being shut down I don't think it's any indication it won't be), but the ending clearly set up a second season. Plenty of room to improve, but I don't see the show realistically correcting any of its major flaws.

Reservation Dogs is back for its final season. Such a great show. I applaud Taika Waititi and Sterling Harjo for ending the series on their own terms, but I will always wish for more and I hope these young actors get to go on and do more great things.

I watched the opening two episodes of S3 of Only Murders in the Building
So far, so good. Lots of funny lines. Really liked Martin Short in these two episodes. That was a much bigger role for Meryl Streep than I imagined. She was really good, shockingly. Paul Rudd also is giving a fun performance as an asshole actor.
The premise here is not nearly as funny as the S1 true crime parody was. But, it looks like it should be fun.

Good Omens S2E3: David Tennant sliding into a Scottish accent is fun enough, and then I realized he was basically doing his Scrooge McDuck voice.
We're also watching S3 of Only Murders, S3 of Reservation Dogs and S5 of What We Do In the Shadows - which honestly, WWDITS was a little off its game last season, it felt like, but this season has been GREAT.

Finished Good Omens S2. Agree that it was largely inconsequential but enjoyable, and that ending...oof. Also entertained by the setup for S3, I hope it gets made.
(I did notice how often Crowley called Aziraphale "Angel" as a seeming term of endearment and not just an address.)

Reservation Dogs is not remotely in the neighborhood of fucking around Christ almighty.
ALSO I sure would like people to stop referring to it as “a Taika Waititi show” when they mean “he made it up and is super deeply involved in every bit of it.” I’m a Taika* fan, but he’s written one episode(the series premiere). He hasn’t directed any. I’m willing to bet he’s credited as a creator because of contract weirdness, or because it only got made because he vouched for it and threw money behind it. IMO it’s obviously Harjo’s show, so maybe actually mention him when talking meta about it.
*I am getting burned out on his personal schtick tbh

There was even an Arab guy! As were the girls’ vocalizations. I do revisit MXC episodes now and again but while they still make me laugh there’s the odd joke that really hasn’t aged well. I’m also definitely curious about the originalmoverall too. I’ve found the original on Internet Archive (don’t trust my phone to do straight quotes and don’t want to go into desktop mode so I’ll boomer link it archive.org/details/003-1986-05-16) but no clue whether they’re subbed.

Finished the third season of Superman & Lois. Really good stuff. The big thing I like about the show is the villains having human motivations (most of the time), and at least some conflicts being resolved by more than just Superman punching things. And amazing to have an entire season about Lois going through breast cancer treatment, and tying that into the villain's story too.

Has anyone seen the Dead Ringers show? I'm reluctant to watch it because I love the original so much, but maybe I'm missing out. Thoughts? It's SO, SO GOOD. Unhinged, beautiful to look at, incredibly acted. You are right. I'm half-way through, and I love it so much. It's even better with female obgyns: more poignant, more relatable, and despite how fucked up it is, more affirming. It belongs in the sadly rare category of film/tv where women really and truly are shown as human beings, and not just laid out for us to admire for their starring roles. More of this, please.

I watched episode 3 of "Only Murders in the Building". I have three reactions to this.
1. Aw, I love that this show is giving Martin Short an actual serious story to play, that still lets him be over-the-top, and there is a sweet romance in it, and Meryl Streep is wonderful in this.
2. OMG, why the hell would any actress stay in this doomed play rather than take a main cast gig in a network tv series?? It was MONSTROUS that Oliver even tried to block that. And it is INSANE that after he reversed that, that this woman decided to give up that tv acting gig. INSANE
3. Folks, Meryl Streep cannot sing. I love her but she cannot. I mean, she is fine for an untrained singer. But I'd never call her good. And it really hurt me, like, physically hurt me to hear the autotune and pitch correction they used to try to make it seem like she can sing. It may as well have been a robot.
OMG, sometimes I wish my ear training weren't this good, because I wouldn't notice this stuff. But, yikes.

It feels like the murderer almost has to be one of three people: Meryl Streep, Jesse Williams, or Paul Rudd's brother, and it's probably one of the first two. And given that
In the first season, it was Charles's love interest, and in the second season, it was Mabel's love interest, the pattern would make it a lock that it's Oliver's love interest this season. Which, granted, means it probably isn't, but they may lean into it rather than subvert it.

Feel free to sing in front of me! I'm mostly fine with just regular people singing. As long as they aren't claiming to be a professional trained singer!
It annoys me when Hollywood tries to say actresses who can't sing can, and then uses a metric ton of vocal processing software to make that seem like it is true. I've heard Meryl Streep sing in several previous movies. It was not good. Meryl Streep is a great actress! She isn't a singer. And that's okay! (She also couldn't sing in the live YouTube celebration of Sondheim's birthday during 2020. And it was noticeable because she was singing with Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald!)
But, holy hell, did you hear this song she did in OMITB's S3E3? This was autotuned and pitch corrected to an insane level! Like, an actual trained singer wouldn't have sounded that "perfect". It was ridiculous. To my ears it sounded like a machine. I'd rather just hear the real Meryl Streep sing slightly out of tune than that!!
This show also auto-tuned and pitch corrected Ashley Park in the same song, and she CAN sing! It was absurd. They both sounded like robots!
Please, for the love of god, Hollywood/Music Industry, stop using these vocal processing tools. Just let people sing!!!
Edited to add: We need a term like "uncanny valley" to describe digital voice creation. What these people are doing is making real humans sound like robots! It is completely unnatural sounding, and it deeply bothers me to listen to.

That doesn't really work, because the killer in S2 wasn't really a love interest of any of the main cast members. Mabel's love interest that season was just a really boring character.
I have the same three characters as my most likely suspects at this point.
I can see why in S3 they'd want to make the killer Meryl Streep's character, because why else would you cast freaking Meryl Streep? But, this does feel too easy for several reasons. And if she really was the killer, wouldn't that be MORE of a reason to take that Network tv gig in Los Angeles? Why stay there?
I know they made an on screen joke about this, but wow, it would be tiresome to have the killer be another woman.

I apparently misremembered the ending to season 2 - I guess I was mixing up the real reveal and the fake reveal.

I don't like Streep's singing either, though I'm not so bothered that it ruined the scene for me. I quite liked it and felt it was yet another example of the show being more daring and interesting than I'd maybe expect from a Steve Martin and Martin Short production in 2023. OMITB is really a neat show. But your comment highlights one of the bigger problems I have with Death Rattle Dazzle: you can't just turn a play into a musical and keep the same cast ... on Broadway. Not that it has to be realistic, but none of these performers was hired to sing in the show.

I mean, I was joking, but I would describe myself as "church good" - I can carry a tune and harmonize, I can read music (played the flute and piano) but I have no formal training and not a big range. I did watch the OMITB episode, and I will say that I wasn't that focused on her actual voice, so no, I didn't notice the autotune. But I also wasn't listening for it. I can understand why it would bother you.
