Purple Rain. I'm going to have a lot to say for PCW.

The last movie I saw was Planes 2 with my 6-year old son. We have to judge these types of movies by whether or not he wants to lie down and go to sleep in the movie theatre; in this case, that was true for about 90% of it. The big rescue part at the end was slightly more exciting.

Insidious was a lot better than I was expecting. James Wan knows how to set up a scene all right, though I wish he could rid himself of the need for booming sound cues whenever there's a fright. Part 2 tomorrow night. What should my expectations be?

A double feature: Mulholland Drive and Weekend, two of my favorite films.
The last film I saw that I hadn't previously seen was Darling, starring Julie Christie. She deserved her Academy Award.

"Wish I Was Here" last week. Still angry about that one. I feel like I have to ask: why? Zach Braff anything feels like an exercise in buyer's remorse. Well, it was a free screening, so I give myself a little credit for not being out money to see it.

Tonight, I completed the Shaggy Dog-a-verse with the Shaggy D.A. Again, a movie I hadn't seen in 30 years, but was still enjoyable.
I also watched Jack Reacher. I thought it was a pretty good actioner. I never want to like Tom Cruise, but I pretty much always do (I never read any of the Reacher books, but I understand Tom Cruise was woefully miscast. 6'6", 290 he's not).

I finished the Battered Bastards of Baseball on Netflix. Better than I expected. Got to learn about Kurt Russell's dad. It was about on par with a good "30 For 30".

The second half of Red Cliff. It's pretty great, if definitely an example of printing the legend rather than reality - the protagonists are so brilliant you might wonder if this may be based on some period propaganda - but it's entertaining.

I finally watched Hunger Games: Catching Fire tonight. I liked it better than the first one, but so much of the actual HungerGames was filmed so darkly. And I still am not sure what happened during the last 15 minutes,

Using this weekend to catch up on 2013 titles. American Hustle last night. her the night before. 2013 was a really good year for movies, IMO, and I haven't even seen the Oscar winner yet.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Mrs. Snape picked it as much for background noise as anything else as I finished cleaning up the house after a big party on Saturday. I joined her about 30 minutes into the movie, and while neither of us felt a need to see it (again), neither of us felt a need to change the channel either. Baby was in a good mood, so we kinda just kept watching it.
Since Nia Vardarlos' career didn't exactly explode, it's kind of a footnote of a movie now, but I was reminded of what a funny, sweet movie it is. And for better or worse, remarkably conflict-free.
Woman objects. Man says one line. They're making out.
Dad objects. Next scene, boy asks girl to marry, she says yes.
Next scene, we're already well into the planning process.
Etc.

I just watched the Evil Dead remake/sequel or whatever it is. Pleasantly surprised. Really liked the over-the-top gore. Apparently they didn't use any CGI in that movie, which blows me away. That's a lot of fake blood.

Last week I finally got around to seeing the recent Casino Royale. Wasn't that wild about it to be honest. It went on far too long, while the chase scenes were good they got repetitive, not giving a shit about poker the tournament parts were boring and I didn't buy that Bond fell for Vesper Lynd b/c Craig and Green seemed to have 0 chemistry. Of the Craig Bonds Skyfall is the only one I liked. I don't think he's bad in the role, I'm guessing it's just that he's ill served by the directing (Haggis and Forester are kinda shitty at this).

I liked Casino Royale OK, except for the problem with most movie poker in that all of a sudden everybody at the table has improbable hands and no one is bluffing at all.

That's a lot of fake blood. My husband and I went to see the matinee on a weekday and we were the only people in the theater - so we could talk as loud as we wanted and look things up on our phones and crack wise mst3k style - it was great! Pleasantly surprised is a pretty accurate review. I think any sane Evil Dead fan probably had very low expectations going in, so when the movie turned out to be, well, not completely awful it was a relief.

I usually find chase scenes kind of boring, but I thought the one at the beginning of CR was fantastic. It actually told you a ton about what kind of character the "new" Bond was going to be. Also, your comment about Green is crazy. She'd have chemistry with a coffee table.

I watched it alone in my room and my opinion of it slowly grew to the point where Jane Levy finally picks up the chainsaw and I actually said out loud "Oh FUCK yes." Also any movie that allows me to have this exchange with my roommate: "What are you watching?" "Evil Dead. Basically a possessed girl killing some white boys." "Oh, nice." Is good in my book.

The Hunt is just heart breaking. Gotta love the kindergarten teacher who says "I believe children never lie." What universe does she come from?
Of course D'Angelo gave it a B-. I really do dislike that guy.

World's End. Somehow, I had managed to stay unspoiled on this all this time. I liked it, but I probably liked it less than Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Amazing Spider-Man 2, I felt it was better than most people said. Not great, but there was some nice stuff in there. Kind of a mess though.

Frozen
My buddy has been bugging us to watch Frozen with him since the day the blu-ray came out. We also had a grandparent begging us for some babysitting time. So the small child went to hang out with grandpa, while the three 30 year-olds piled on the couch to watch a Disney movie.
Verdict: Yeah, it's good. Of course it is. Very entertaining. I'm not sure I understand why it was such the mega-hit that it was, but no doubt an enjoyable flick.

Magic Mike. Liked it. I enjoyed the naturalistic acting, and that it wasn't a particularly high stakes drama. Sometimes that's what you want, something that feels pitched at real life rather than the hyper-life of most art. I'm not saying my real life revolves around male stripping, you understand.

These are my thoughts on Frozen exactly. I'm also kind of perplexed that its cited as a "feminist" Disney movie. I mean, I guess the main characters ultimately solve their problems without the need for male help, but I think you could also read the movie as "crazy emotional broads can't be trusted with superpowers!"

Guardians of the Galaxy
Really good, though not on the Avengers/Cap 2 level. It had two cameos that made me very happy.
