Well, I'm kind of proud of myself. Over the past 24 hours, I've managed to go to my local movie theaters twice for two very, very, very different features.
Last night I caught Tusk. Poor decision on my part seeing it that late in the evening, since some of that disturbing (and I do mean disturbing) imagery kept me up last nigh, but damn what a movie. Now frankly, it's got a few scenes that are overlong and feel like they're just there to add more "gross humor" or bawdy gags to the picture, but honestly it's one of the best horror movies made in recent years and the way it keeps tension going consistently through the film is astonishing. It actually reminded me of Zack and Miri Make A Porno in that a really "out-there" subject matter has a surprisingly potent emotional finale. I also feel like Michael Parks needs to be in everything for all-time.
A few hours back I caught The Maze Runner which was....OK. For most of it, I was actually really impressed, it reminded me more of The Twilight Zone than some Hunger Games knock-off. It's interesting mysteries and emphasis on character interactions really made it entertaining....then the finale comes. These guys just had no idea how to end this, with at least FIVE different potential endings popping up. It becomes some sort of joke by the time the actual conclusion arrives. Doesn't help that the last few minutes of the actual film just become a preview for the next movie. C'mon guys, save it for after the credits.

Got any good recommendations for my upcoming horror movie marathon also known as October? Oh gosh, so many! Jacob's Ladder (we're watching it for this month's movie club here!), Don't Look Now, The Changeling, The Thing, the original Haunting of Hill House are some great classics just off the top of my head. More modern ones I love: The Inkeepers, House of the Devil, Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (for horror/comedy), Pontypool, The Conjuring, The Host, and Lovely Molly. All of those modern ones are on Netflix, btw! There's TONS more that I'm not thinking of, I'll add if I remember something I think of as a must-see. I always throw out In the Mouth of Madness. It doesn't get enough love. Carpenter does Lovecraft!

Nerd: really?!? Wow, that love for "Tusk" surprises me. That being said, I am a huge fan of "Zack and Miri".
What did you think of "Red State"?

Cloud Atlas. I have not read the book, but I thought the movie was pretty good. Not every segment worked, and the Neo Seoul make-up was pretty jarring, but it was still enjoyable.

Hmm, one of my coworkers also said Tusk was pretty good. I'm interested, but my commitment to not giving Kevin Smith any of my money will keep me from seeing it until it's on video and I can borrow/steal it.

I saw The World's End in a hotel in China a couple days ago. I had zero knowledge of the movie whatsoever so when it suddenly went from being a fairly straightforward albeit comedic movie about middle aged men embarking on a pub crawl to suddenly becoming a movie about middle aged men battling robots/alien invaders about 40 minutes into the runtime I was kind of perplexed. It was still pretty good though.

I agree with the AV Club on the Tusk grade of C- the tone was just too uneven. The first half was great camp with Parks giving some amazing monologues. I actually enjoyed the surprise cameo, maybe because I had no idea who he was until today. That part fit in very well with the earlier camp, it was the walrus reveal that really slowed the movie down for me. It was trying to be campy but disgusting and for whatever reason it just fell flat. I was thinking the ending might have been able to save it, but that just felt really dumb.

I saw I Saw the Devil. Korean cinema, always so wonderfully weird. The direction and cinematography was top notch, and there was actually some fun to be had from such a dark and horrific story. It's not the best film, but it certainly rises above most horror or thriller films that can be likened to it, there is some point to violence in it. The acting was also phenomenal from both the main leads. A solid B+

Well, it is more Thriller than Horror. I would say it is more scary in the vein of say something like Zodiac where it comes from a few scenes in particular. And the antagonist in the film is just one truly evil prick.

My son and I watched the Secret of Kells last night. We'd seen it before but he didn't remember much, and he absolutely loved it. What a unique, breathtaking, magical movie - think I'll get him the blu-ray for Christmas so we can always have it.

Watched "Revolver" with Ma Freshenmeyer last night. Typical over-stylish Guy Ritchie pablum that looks like every god damn student film I sat through from senior year of high school all the way through senior year of college.

"Diary of a Country Priest." Meant to watch it for years and found it to be fantastic. The influence on Taxi Driver is obvious, with the inner monologue of the haunted male loner. Now definitely among my favourites. I certainly want to see the rest of Bresson's films now. Now planning to watch the latter half of "Into Great Silence," a lengthy, non-narrated documentary about the Carthusian monks at Grand Chartreuse. songstarliner That looks really worthwhile. Unusual, interesting topic for a children's film.

Just to alert the human race, I just got back from a 7 PM showing of The Boxtrolls. I'll be writing my full review of it tomorrow, however I will say the movie was plenty charming with fun animation and a wonderful performance from Ben Kingsley. However, the film is saddled with a script that's waaaaaayyy too long and a bit of a mess in terms of handling it's characters and tone.
I would also like to note that before my feature was preview for for Alexander and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, which had a PG Rating for.......reckless behavior?? What the hell does that even mean?

Point Break in a shitty resolution on youtube, after looking for a Point Break clip earlier, and then finding the whole movie sitting there, and probably appropriately channeling some taped off the tv on an already well-used tape vibe, which I feel is the true spirit of action movies of it's time.

Space Station 76: sweet, occasionally dark, daft little oddity. Probably helps if you survived the actual 70s decor. Little Kylie Rogers as Sunshine was brilliant, Liv Tyler's surprisingly deft at slapstick and Matt Bomer is still unfeasibly pretty.

There's considerable difference between the US and UK prints... but you probably won't care. I liked it, but blunt Qaballistic metaphors are my bag. Love the score, too.

Finally watched Edge of Tomorrow. Pretty good, fun military SF. Thought the romance was a bit forced and the entire ending sequence was lit so poorly it was impossible to tell what was happening. It was like Pacific Rim all over again. Let's see some combat during the day, eh? (Yes I know the beach was during the day. I'm still complaining.)

Well, The Equalizer was.....not terrible, awful? It's kind of a weird production, because there's very little to say that's actually good in it, but admittedly there's also not a ton in the movie that renders it horrendous. I was a little disturbed by Washington's protagonist though, thanks to how casually he doles out graphic violence that the audience is supposed to cheer for. How the hell he got away with even half of his violent shenanigans is anyone's guess.
I suppose it's worth a watch in theaters if you like Denzel Washington, but otherwise this is something to watch when it's Sunday afternoon, it's 20 minutes until that FXX Simpsons marathon, ya need something to watch until then and then, hey, waddya know, there's 20 minutes left of The Equalizer on TNT.

It was so refreshing to see an action movie with color such as this one, rather than varying shades of beige or split-toned orange and blue as has been popular since the Bourne movies.

I'm not saying it wasn't colorful. I'm just tired of all non-Marvel blockbusters having their epic, sweeping climactic battles at night. It's probably because it's easier to animate, but good lord, it's hard to tell what's going on (especially with the notorious quick-cutting that all action movies do now). It's muddy and confusing, and by extension, dull. The scenes of battle on the beach during the day were great. It was just the last sequence that was bad. Didn't ruin the movie, but after seeing what had come before, it was a huge bummer.

Since it was my birthday I had the chance to make my family sit through a movie they normally wouldn't because they do not have the range of taste that most AVClubbers have. This year I chose Snowpiercer, they were puzzled by the fish scene to say the least.
