Ok, had a couple of days to digest, but just a few closing thoughts.
Favorite season? 4, the kids just killed me. Favorite scene? All "Fuck" crime scene with Bunk and McNulty Did it live up to the hype? Mostly yes, I would recommend the series to just about anyone and I cannot say that about much else in pop culture. I would put it on par with Breaking Bad. Neither are perfect but they do represent some of the best of what TV can be. What do I wish had gone differently? I wish season 2 was more closely integrated with the rest of the series. Syndor was underdeveloped. McNulty needed to face more consequences of his actions throughout. The newspaper team was underdeveloped. Biggest gut punch: Michael leaving Bug followed closely by Carver leaving Randy Biggest surprise: Wallace (after that murders of main characters was less surprising even if they were not expected) Favorite character: Omar Most satisfying moment: Omar selling the drugs back to Prop Joe.
I don't know what I am going to do with myself now that I am not writing these a couple of times a week. I liked the process of thinking closely about the episode in order to write about it, but I do not think my forte is writing. I do much better reading and commenting. Sorry if the reviews lacked too much depth. I just did not have time to write a lot about each episode. Thanks to whoever turned me on to the Sepinwall reviews at the start. I never read each one until after I finished mine for that episode here, but they did shed a lot of light on things I missed.

I have to agree with most of your superlatives. I didn't even learn Sydnor by name until season 5. The biggest gut punch for me was Duquan, though; Bug is getting an aunt and Randy is getting at least some kind of crappy structured system, but Dukie is just out there. Omar's death was the biggest surprise for me, as I said earlier, but that was mostly because I knew he would live at least as far as that episode.
How do you feel about the final montage? I know the message that nothing really changes is the whole point, but the pains to show how Character X is the new Character Y was a bit much.

I think they had to make it a little too obvious just to seal the deal with the majority of the audience. I think the season 3 finale was a bit more subtle and really the series could have ended there in a satisfying manner. I am glad they did not, but seasons 4-5 did kind of have to start over again. I agree with Sepinwall that the kid playing Michael was bit too much Omar in his robbery scene, but that had to be fun for the actor and the writers so I can forgive it.
