I watched the original Phantasm again recently, and I love it's dream/delusion like quality. It has a narrative, but as seen through the eyes of Mike, (the Boyyyyyyyyy! of the story) it is never clear what is really happening, and what is simply in Mike's unstable mind. Traumatized by the death of his parents, and further stressed by the possibility of his brother moving away, an unstable Mike begins to see signs of evil surrounding the local undertaker. But is any of it real? To me, the difference that makes the sequels so much weaker, is that from II on, it is basically accepted that the Tall Man actually exists in our reality. If you watch the first one with the idea that it might only be the struggle inside Mike's own mind to face his inner fears, and to hold onto his grip on reality, it seems to me to be a much richer story. I knew I had seen other movies with a similar tone, and tried to remember some that would make a good triple feature. I immediately thought of Donnie Darko, but couldn't think of a third until today, when the sad news of the passing of Elizabeth Pena reminded me of her tremendous performance in Jacob's Ladder.
So my Halloween "Is any of this real / Am I losing my mind?" triple feature would be: Phantasm Donnie Darko Jacobs Ladder.
What would you recommend for a Halloween triple feature, and what theme (if any, there doesn't really need to be one) might it follow?

I watched Phantasm in my 20s and hated it precisely because it didn't seem to have any coherent story or make sense...maybe I missed the point then?
Since I discovered Ti West during October last year and really like his work, I would recommend this triple feature for anyone who hasn't seen them yet:
V/H/S - Anthology film with several creepy entries. Ti West directed "Second Honeymoon". House of the Devil - Great "alone in the house with weird shit happening", and very well done 70s atmosphere. The Innkeepers - Fucking terrifying ghost story in an old inn about to close for good.
(EDIT - Jacob's Ladder and Donnie Darko are both amazing films. Jacob's Ladder freaked me the fuck out when I saw it ages ago. RIP Elizabeth Pena.)

My usual Halloween triple feature for no particular reason is: The Addams Family (1991) Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) The Thing (1982)
Since The Disolve has been doing this week's feature on Re-Animator, I am thinking of hitting up a horror/comedy block this year with: Re-Animator Evil Dead 2 Shawn of the Dead

The Ti West triple feature sounds intriguing. I've only seen House of the Devil but it was thoroughly creepy.

If you liked House of the Devil for the creepy factor, you should really like The Innkeepers. The basement scenes especially are pretty much all terrifying.

Re-Animator From Beyond Dagon

Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby would make a good double feature in the Is This Real? theme night (if we can get over the Polanski thing). I don't have time for a triple feature, sorry. Halloween's not that big over here.

Done in a grindhouse style - intoxicants to be taken before, during and after
Beyond the Black Rainbow (shown earliest so one doesn't fall asleep, or black out from the sound and art design) [interstitial] Meshes of the Afternoon [interstitial] The Ring (US version) [interstitial] Elisa Lam footage [interstitial] Lost Highway
Done in a rave-up, laff-it-up, we're havin' fun with violence style - intoxicants to be taken before, during and after

Werewolf triple feature!
Ginger Snaps An American Werewolf in London Dog Soldiers
And I think Halloween is great because it's fun-scary, and so a good combination of horror movies that hit that specific mark would be maybe:
Return of the Living Dead Child's Play Evil Dead 2
Although I feel like there are way too many options for that one. 80s horror is to me, the epitome of fun-scary.

Okay, this year, I'm thinking these three for Halloween: Peeping Tom, The Collector, and Frenzy.

I always watch The Shining and the original Amityville Horror. If I had to pick a third I guess it would be Blair Witch Project just cause I love it so much.
You couldn't pay me to watch Jacob's Ladder again. Nope, nope, nope.

In no particular order:
Nosferatu Halloween (original recipe) ์ฅํ, ํ๋ จ (which wikipedia tells me is "A Tale of Two Sisters" in English)
There's no specific theme involved other than "I have DVDs of these movies and can watch them with ease." If I'm going from a triple feature to a four-pack I'd probably tack on Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein.

Halloween's not that big over here. But, you only need add The Tenant to complete your trilogy. In fact, Polanski had early 60s outlines for his "Apartment Trilogy" that included The Tenant and only luckily had The Tenant jumped back into his lap in the 70s - kismet. Tangential Trivia: My wiki-wander unfurled the relationship between the author of The Tenant, Roland Topor, and Alejandro Jodorowsky * Scanners moment*.

You know, I've seen The Tenant, but probably need to see it again - it didn't hit me as hard as some of his films, and I can't remember a huge amount about it.

My favorite anthologies (because why stop at three stories when you can have fifteen vignettes?): - Creepshow (1982)
- Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)
- Tales from the Crypt (1972)

Re-Animator From Beyond Dagon I started Dagon the other night, and had to shut it off right as it I was getting invested in it. It was only a 24 hour rental, and I did not get a chance to pick it back up the next night. I'll take seeing it here as a sign I need to rent it again.

I'm halfway through "Cloverfield", and intrigued but kinda creeped out. Part of me wants to finish it tonight, but I know better than to finish a horror movie at night. I really wanted to see "Jacob's Ladder", but is it really THAT scary...cause if so, I'm hesitant...

Wow, this thread was from four years ago, and my thoughts on The Innkeepers are still relevant. That movie is SUPREMELY creepy.

I'm probably overhyping it now, but it was really good, and creepy as fuck. The trailer is not doing it any favors, but I'll take your word for it. "Really good and creepy as fuck" was how I felt about House of the Devil so I'm still on board. Looks like Innkeepers is on Prime.
