I haven't been drinking a ton of beer recently, for various reasons, but I did try some local beers in Key West that were pretty great. It's so hot that you don't want anything too heavy. I had a style I'd never had before - a Belgian Single. (As opposed to a dubbel, tripel or quad.) It was called Single in the Sun by Barrel of Monks Brewing and it was very tasty.

Carling Black Label is an historied beer originally from Ontario. It has since migrated to other parts of the Commonwealth, lodging its wort in the hearts of ZAF. I purchased this as a 750ml bottle circuitously shipped from Sandton, ZAF to Whangarei, NZ. Upon consumption doggerel ensued.
I did not pour it in a glass. It did not knock me on my ass. A champion been I made. With this golden lager's aid.

I've been purchasing 12-packs in order to limit the time spent at supermarkets, since there's a lockdown going on in NZ. It's reduced its severity in my region (i.e. not in Auckland), so it's easier to get to stuff; but not by much. And, I've been going the Red Beer route, or Michelada when drinking a beer in the afternoon. That tempers the review.
Upscaling Success
S.A. Damm is a Barcelona brewery putting out beer since 1876. They're distributed by Asahi in Oceania. They produce a fair lager named Estrella Damm having some bitterness that reminds this drinker of a 'Kiss of the Hops' found in Schlitz or the grain-fed mouth squeeze found in Tennent's Lager, but without the super-charged fizziness you come to love in American adjuncts. I liked it initially as a mixer to my michelada concoctions, but found it didn't have the bounce of a Sol, Pacifico, or even Corona to push the jugo de tomate up in the palate to make a good drink. However, alone it is decent.
Upscale Fail
Kingfisher is a brew most here who've been to an Indian restaurant have likely tried. My personal beer fave of the Indian restaurant game is Taj Mahal. Kingfisher Premium is alright. It works better alone or with food. it is not a beer to mix in to a michelada.

I have a beer I'm waiting for slightly cooler weather to drink - Off Color Brewing's Pumpkin Beer for Cafes. The original Beer for Cafes was a chai-inspired beer; this one is a pumpkin beer with rooibos tea and vanilla. It sounds like a fantastic twist on a typical pumpkin beer, but it's not quite cool enough for it yet.

Several years ago I went overboard on pumpkin beers one season, and I have rejected them ever since. But last week I saw the Voodoo Ranger Atomic Pumpkin in the BYO section and decided to give it a try. It's made with cinnamon and habanero chiles.
Really pleasant surprise. Very crisp, not heavy at all, with a nice undercurrent of spice from the chiles. I could easily crush a 6-pack in a sitting. I would say that despite being in the Voodoo Ranger line (New Belgium's IPA line), it doesn't taste like an IPA ... but since that's mostly what I drink my palate is so completely clobbered that I probably can't fairly judge.

Wusu
A Xinjiang beer recently acquired by Carlsberg Group. It is a 3.1% lager. Basically a valuable addition to a feed at the hot pot trough.
Investigating the beer led to the wiki-wisdom that there is such a thing as China Pabst Blue Ribbon. I hold such information in astonishment.

"Here's to good friends..."
Löwenbräu has made its presence available in NZ via 500ml cans. Had to get this artefact of nostalgia when I spotted a pale blue can in the midst of the chiller. Its flavour, body, and colour did meet Reinheitsgebot.

My most-visited supermarket of late has had a run of interesting adjuncts. I was happily surprised when I found 500ml cans of San Miguel (Pale Pilsen). I mean, I've seen their malt liquor, Red Horse, for more than a few years. To see this little gem available was a true treat.

I'm about to feel bad for this, and I already have...but hear me out. This would have been bought and paid for prior to Putin monkey-wrenching an already misshapen global economy machine, so make of it as you wish. Sibirskaya Korona is a 5.3% ABV lager beer brewed in Omsk. I got it in a litre can. I drank half cold, most of the remaining liquid at variously unpleasant temperatures. Comes in a cool can that looks interesting because it isn't some craft beer can trying to be cool.

Been enjoying LOW CARB Isbjørn, recently. I've lauded its regular and light versions in this thread. This version of Isbjørn has been recently introduced in NZ to compete with shithouse lo-carb blends from local producers bound by the global yoke of Kirin Holdings Company.
In a roundabout way filled with leagues of complaints and chips on multiple virtual shoulders, this is a drinkable lo-carb beer that is probably worth a slurp should you find yourself in need of a health-conscious lawn beer.

While in Quebec City I had Joufflue Belgian White at Microbrasserie Archibald which was delightful. Over the last couple of years I've kinda been losing my taste for beer, but it's still not completely gone since I can still appreciate something refreshing as this. Only went there because we got coupons for a free beer there from the nordic spa down the road which was the highlight of our trip (possibly unpopular opinion, Quebec City is vastly overrated. From previous trips to the Great White North we honestly vastly preferred both Montreal and Ottawa (which Canadians seem to rag on for some reason).

If I saw a litre can kicking about in a shop I would buy one for the sheer novelty. Heck, I've bought pint cans (UK 568ml version) for that exact reason. The only brewery I've seen make them, or anything else bigger than 500ml, is Arbor Ales from Bristol who are very good at making pints and putting them in cans like these ones here.

An adequate brown ale with a few bright terpene notes plopped on but few shelves. Quaintly crafted by a town crier and former mayor for the 175th anniversary commemorating the village of Howick's establishment.

Monsuta Okinawa Dry Premium Draft This is a spot brew beer, truly brewed by Orion Breweries. Maybe they chose or ordained a slightly different hops mix to make something a bit different? Still a great beer if only made a little more unique by its kaiju giant sumo wrestler.

If you've had the Premium, you're probably going to try the Supreme. Another Orion Breweries Limited spot/batch brew with cool can art. I haven't had the Premium and Supreme side by side to compare colour, taste, head, and so forth. Note below that the words "premium" and "supreme" appear. Still, a worthy buy at the exorbitant Oceania prices. 6-pack reduced to an affordable $16.

On second beer, I will offer my personal rebuke of Monsuta Supreme. It's got a higher IBU, meaning there's "fancy" hops input into the wort. I much prefer the revved-up rice beer flavours of the Premium.

I do get "fancy" beer when I'm out at restaurants. This one's a real low profile local beer called, Jerry Rig. It's a Helles beer. Amazing in its subtlety. Really nice. They even made it look nice on their website. Choice.

Yebisu Premium is a Sapporo Breweries offering of special quality. This is a golden lager with a strong twinge of bitterness at first wash across the tongue. Namesake of the Japanese god of fortune. Developed with German oversight in 1890, it is still brewed according to mandates of Reinheitsgebot. If your Japanese restaurant has this, order it. It means you're in a high-quality place. If your beer stop has this, you'll want to try it at least.

Not titled "Adventures in Low Carb Beer Drinking"
Steinlager is a storied brand of New Zealand beer. So stories of meandering way and questionable value appear herewith.
Not that many in North America would know, but there is a variety of beers within the Steinlager brand; Tokyo Dry and Pure being examples. All in purpose of seeking to retain a market that has evaporated like the alcohol in a dynamic wort boiling. The Asahi Breweries-owned Lion NZ manufacturers the slabs on which many young people over the years have slipped, fallen, got up, and done the same over again. Like Waikato Draught, DB Draught, DB Export, Tui, Steinlager, and others. To see the largest Zero Carbon brewery in NZ at Lion NZ HQ in East Tamaki, Auckland is a sight to behold. All glass and metal, panes and tubes. All pomp and circumstance like the title of "Largest Zero Carbon brewery in NZ". To wit, this sentiment of "biggest, bestest, brightest in NZ" is a part of the national psyche that prides itself on "punching above its weight" on the global stage.
Some media wags have published thought pieces in the past few years about losing NZ heritage with waning brew consumption. The marketing arm of this media published an imploration to drink the new offering I am about to pillory when it first appeared on shelves back in September 2022.
Ultra Low Carb Steinlager is a fizzy malt drink nearing zero carbohydrates and containing 4.2% ABV. It is only to be drunk cold, and by that I mean, "very cold". Otherwise, it turns to a tepid vitamin drink that reminds one of spoonfuls of castor oil.
Stay tuned, gentle and feral readers, for the next post that will crown a new litre of the pack in the Bamburg beer, Kaiserdom.

Ah, but a brief interlude before visiting the bierhall of the king. Not titled, "Further Adventures in Low Carb Beer". Seeing the double overhead of a macker in the future of beer consumption that leaves bellies potted and toned abs weakened, a group of bros struck on the idea to somehow make beer better. And what's better than your dad and brothers' 4X-VB piss? Your own piss without carbs. They came up with Better Beer. Full stop.If you're wanting piss without the trouble of stretching your billabong board shorts, piss without too much alcohol, piss that pisses clear, then this is your piss, bros.

Guys, they got me. I done been got good. Yes, my parsimony was appealed to when I bought that group of cans that had lost their packaging for less than a sixer. Yes, it included a soda-like concoction using cider as its base alcohol. Yes, the makers of this cunning beverage chose to include a low amount of carbs and calories. And, the makers of this drink put the chef's kiss of a blackberry syrup into its admixture.
As I further regress into a fog of nostalgia tinted with hopes of a better future that looks like the present remembering the past, I will be drinking alcohol made for young drinkers. Occasionally, that can will be Rekorderling Ultra Berry. No more Scrumpy for me, Apple Jacks. Just smooth, low-cal, fruity, fizzy alcohol beverages.
Beer, I'm so sorry. I know we can still be friends.

So there's increasing evidence that nonalcoholic beer could be good for you, especially in fighting inflammation and in immune response. It seems to be associated with the polyphenols, which are present in both alcoholic and nonalcoholic but the alcohol neutralizes the health benefits. So, good news as I've been dabbling in alcohol-free lately. My current favorite is this:

SnowAs a person once sang, "A licky boom boom dem", so too does this beer inform one of a need to "Break a car troo". But not a need so overwhelming that it's a situation "Where dey look down me pants". Now that I've snowed you in, I sincerely like this beer as a food accompaniment. Comes in a sweet blue bottle in its 600ml form. Never mind that there is English script saying this is SuperX; The photo below does indeed represent Snow beer.
