Once when Confucius's disciple Zai Yu was sleeping in the middle of the day, the Master said: "You can't carve rotten wood, and you can't whitewash a filthy wall. But what's the use of admonishing a person like Zai Yu? I used to listen to what people said and then assume that they would do just what they said they would. But now after listening to someone, I wait and see if what they do is the same as what they said. Zai Yu helped change my thinking on this." "Fuck you, Confucius!" -Zai Yu

Humanity has its need to dream. And if you do not give humanity the good music, the good pictures, the good books that will set it dreaming right, it will dream the bad dreams that lead to lies and death.

Hey mods,
Can this thread be reassigned to active duty? Obviously there is still a want for this one, and clicking over to the "Archive" boards more or less only for this thread is boring. Let's put it back on the main thread or TMI or somewhere.
Yes?

Three of my favorites right here, with wildly different lengths:
"Harder edge pop, sometimes with very personal lyrics, coexisting with records that are nothing but fun. Sax solos are replaced by guitar solos, but they still try to do it all in three minutes. It was the moment when pop became rock, straight became hip, innocent became conscious, and then self-conscious. AM radio became FM. Mono became stereo and 2-track recording became 4-track, then 8, then 16, then 24. Before rock split into a dozen subgenres, it was the last of the purity, with truly timeless rock and roll classics being played by thousands of local bands, all sharing the common ground of the thrill of discovery, exploration, and the unprecedented liberation of living out one's fantasies, in addition to, at least temporarily, experiencing the relief of released frustration, confusion, humiliation, pain, and suffering which no teenager can really escape. It might be because of some uncontrollable genetic compulsion by the bands, or an unfulfilled need by the audience, but all I know is, this music we used to call rock and roll and now call garage rock is still being produced. It continues to possess the one profoundly important common quality it had forty years ago: it is cool."- Steve Van Zandt, on the relevance of rock music '65-'68

Ali quotes:
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact; it's an opinion. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing."
"Only a man who knows what it is like to be defeated can reach down to the bottom of his soul and come up with the extra ounce of power it takes to win when the match is even."
“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up.”
"I got speed and endurance./You'd better increase your insurance."
“I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.”
"It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up."

No. He's a very minor character, only on a page or two. That quote just reminded me of somebody I used to know.
