The two hour premiere is tomorrow night!! As someone who thought Hayley Atwell was one of the best parts of the Captain America movie all the way back in 2011, it's a dream come true to see her get her own TV show! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

Interestingly, neither Channel 4 nor RTE2 have picked up Agent Carter (the British and Irish channels respectively which air Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.).

From the link: Cry me a fucking river. One of many head-scratching statements in that review, such is Slate.

Much as I enjoyed it, I was somewhat miffed that they went to great lengths to get period details on the props right, but put Peggy in modern faux-seamed stockings instead of actual period-correct fully-fashioned nylons. A small detail, but one that pulled me out of suspender suspension of disbelief.

They just showed a rerun tonight I happened to catch (was just gonna wait until it came on Hulu). But I loved it, I've been familiar with the name James D'Arcy but hadn't seen him in anything and well he is just so damn charming. That last scene between him and Peggy where they talked about Steve was really sweet.

From the link: Cry me a fucking river. OMG noooooooooooooooooooo not bad guys who are consistently visible from episode to episode! We demand resolutions at the end of each episode and brand new bad guys every time! We do not understand how to process the concept of MacGuffins and actual period costuming! Dude, seriously. It's not actually complicated. PEGGY IS AWESOME AND BEATS UP EVERYONE. I'm pretty pleased.

Agent Carter looks pretty slick in black and white, as someone on Reddit demonstrated. The resolution is too high to be mistaken for something from the 40's, plus there's something about how the close-ups are framed that make me think it's 21st century, but the lighting and general look definitely recalls the era's visual style.

That was a pretty weak ending, though. Trite dialogue, kidnapping Stark required everyone to carry the Idiot Ball, the Peggy/Dottie fight was underwhelming (nice use of Thai scarf fighting style by Peggy though) and she really should have shot Dottie when she was down. Don't even get me started on Ralph Brown's revenge plot/accent (I love the guy, but I seriously think he was cast mostly because of how much he looked like Hopkins' Hannibal in the mouth guard).
I like the show, most of the cast are splendid and I do hope it gets renewed. But it needs something stronger than this.

I like the show, most of the cast are splendid and I do hope it gets renewed. But it needs something stronger than this. I think the finale was a good wrap-up of the series in general, and had the pacing, action and emotional heft of the first two eps. But you're so right about the Idiot Ball - Dottie missing Stark at the press conference immediately seemed off, and Jarvis not bothering to interact with the driver seemed slapdash as well. I do give some credit to Peggy for not really knowing just how deadly Dottie was, as their only interaction had Peggy overcome by the poisoned lipstick, not crazy parkour assassin moves. Since it looks like the finale followed almost immediately after Dooley's jump, there wasn't much time to pull all of the pieces together between Peggy, Thompson & Sousa. But perhaps I'm making excuses. The fight was underwhelming to me, too, because I wanted Peggy to keep out of range of Dottie and out-smart her somehow, rather than charge in once she lost the rife (and we knew she would lose the rifle).

How sexy was that movie theater, though? (not the dead bodies. the architecture)

I'm really enjoying this season a lot so far! I absolutely adored season 1 and thought it was a great set-up for seasons to come, but season 2 is really knocking it out of the park. I love seeing a Peggy who's no longer weighed down by mourning for Steve Rogers, who's still strong and funny and snarky and tough but who is gradually allowing other people into her life because it's not a life worth living if you're doing it alone. It's a natural character progression. I'm also really happy with Rose's expanded role, the introduction of Ana Jarvis (who is a pure delight), the resurgence of Dottie (I love her weird SWF-style crush on Peggy), Sousa getting over putting Peggy on a pedestal (not a huge fan of the hints of them being in love though), Sousa's adorable nurse girlfriend who is probably going to get whacked in a few episodes for emotional resonance, and Thompson still being a weaselly little prick.
However, I'm annoyed with Oliver Sava's reviews. As you all know by now, I'm quite liberal and progressive, and I push for more gender/sexual/racial/ability diversity in comic-book properties than most people on AVC because I think it's important to remember that straight white people aren't the only ones who made history. It absolutely would be super easy to represent other people by simply hiring fewer white background extras and putting fewer white people into minor roles - this is a world where we have Vita-Rays giving men super-soldier strength and where zero matter swallows dudes whole and zaps them into Whitney Frost's face, so no, I don't think the argument that it was the 40s and segregation existed really flies. This is a world very similar to our own, but it isn't ours. That said, I understand the hesitation on the part of the writers and producers to portray historically accurate acts of racism, whether single acts or institutionalized, beyond what they've already done - this is not The Wire, it is a television show based on a movie series based on comic books. It's supposed to be fun and bright and entertaining and not spend 100% of airtime on heavy shit that can easily go wrong if not approached with subtlety and care.
But every single one of his reviews of this show spends several hundred words complaining about the lack of diversity. Like, people are already going to talk about it, and the racial themes of the show, in the comments section; you don't need to bang on about it for the hundredth time in a row in the actual review?
And no, Agents of SHIELD isn't better because it has more diversity. It simply has more diversity. That's not the same thing and I wish Oliver would remember that, along with a lot of the people who prefer AoS.

And the problem is, too, if you do want to have these discussions in the comments, some asshole has to come along and go "I'm so sick and tired of politics being brought into my entertainment!" like they live in a fucking vacuum. And as a lesbian woman I get very frustrated, because no, we don't live in a vacuum and these issues are relevant. But there's like, two sides here - you have Oliver who wants to turn every single review into a discussion about how bad Marvel is at diversity (like those of us who are comic book fans don't already fucking know??) and you have a section of the commentariat who wants to scream about "historical accuracy" as an excuse for why there shouldn't be any Latinos in the background in 1947 Los Angeles or whatever. I feel like I can't win no matter what I say or do because it's either not enough or it's too much. I just want to talk about the show! In all of its aspects, not just the ones I've decided are personally important or unimportant to me. Also, mostlyharmless23 showed up in that comments section and didn't say anything else, he just went in for the attack on me, and when I told him he was a condescending asshole who targets feminists on the AV Club and I wouldn't be engaging with him anymore, he went berserk. I'm so sick of him and of people like him.

I'm holding out for her being a secret SSR or FBI agent, but she's probably evil and/or gonna die. Too bad, because Sarah Bolger is just the cutest and I'm so happy she's found more work after The Tudors. Come to think of it, they ought to revive that with Mary's reign - she'd be an incredible Queen Mary.

They really stepped up their game this season. Peggy and Jarvis make the best team. And I hope they'll give Lotte Verbeek something more substantial to do, even if she's already wonderful.
