Once upon a time, way out in the 36th century, there was a war. It wasn’t your standard anime space war. Sure, one side was an aristocratic empire clearly modeled on the second Reich, and the other side was a pan-nationalist take on the United States, but they were way more complex than those reductive takes would make them seem. Mostly because their show refused to present them as amalgamated wholes, but instead took special effort to portray the various personalities on either side of the war, some good, some bad, some terribly misguided.
Welcome to Legend of the Galactic Heroes, the anime that puts the opera in space opera. Based on a series of novels, LoGH relates the climax of the war between the Galactic Empire (space Prussia) and the Free Planets Alliance (space America), who have been at war for decades and serious I promise are more nuanced than those names make them sound.
Against this backdrop, two diametrically opposed tacticians are on the ascent. On the side of the Alliance is Yang Wen Li, an aspiring historian thrust by circumstance into the role of savior of his people. On the side of the Empire is Reihard von Musel, a poor noble from a disgraced family who sees military success as his only path to power.
Over 110 episodes, three movies, and a series of supplemental stories, Legend of the Galactic Heroes pits the clash of these two personalities as those around them try to survive in a galaxy beset by war.
More shit to know:
-Yeah, so none of this stuff was ever translated into English, officially. There are fan subs out there, and since DRC has seen the series before I guess he knows I’m gonna have to tell people to go look for those. Make sure it’s as recent as possible. Some of the old ones are super crappy.
-LoGH is famous for having a huge cast. They do title cards to keep you basically up to date on who’s who, but it’s sometimes still confusing. To that end, I’m gonna keep a thread going called “Wait, Who the Fuck Was That?” to keep track of basic personal detail. I’ll try my best to keep it spoiler free, but it will be affected by certain changes. I’ll make sure people know what point it’s current up to.
-So my plan is to cover things in the order they were released. That means the first post will be the movie My Conquest is the Sea of Stars, then the first two parts of the series, then the flashback movie Golden Wings, then the rest of the series, then Overture to a New War, which retells the start of the series, then the gaiden volumes.
