Episode 13: “Postgame Mortem”
I feel like the last few episodes–while fun–have downplayed O’Dell’s death a bit too much, so it’s nice that we finally get some personal connection here with Veronica. Aside from that, though, this episode is all about Heather, the girl Logan spends some time with as a result of Dick heading off to Vegas with her sister. On paper, this storyline sounds like a total mess, but it actually works out quite well because it’s hard not to like Heather. That elevator scene in particular is glorious.
Episode 14: “Mars, Bars”
Veronica in jail makes for some really hilarious moments throughout this one, and it’s entertaining watching the Keith-Veronica-Lamb game play out one last time. And on that note, although I was spoiled beforehand about Lamb’s death, I’m still surprised at the way it happens here. It just…happens, and it comes across more like a vehicle moving Keith into the Sheriff role rather than the final episode for a supporting character. Even though Lamb was more minor than most of the supporting cast, it’s still a really rushed way to write him out.
Episode 15: “Papa’s Cabin”
After three mysteries that ended with intense confrontations between Veronica and the Big Bad–as good as they were–it’s pretty refreshing to see the O’Dell one end with some good ‘ol detective work. Considering the lack of supporting character involvement and time to make us care about the case’s subjects, the arc overall has a bit of a detached feeling, but I’m fairly satisfied with how it all concludes. And although Tim being the one behind it all isn’t exactly a surprising development, the classic “explain everything as everyone watches” setup works for me here. It’s a shame we only have a few more episodes left to watch Veronica Mars do her thing.
Episode 16: “Un-American Graffiti”
I’m definitely not opposed to standalone mysteries, but it’s a strange decision to end the season with a series of them. While there are some over-arching storylines here to carry us toward the series finale, they mostly concern the characters’ dating lives, which I have to say don’t interest me much at this point. And as for the storylines this week, they’re pretty heavy-handed with their messages, but I do find the new Veronica-Keith dynamic to be pretty compelling. Him as Sheriff changes things quite a bit both in the office and around town, and new perspectives are bound to result from the position.
