2001-2017 "Wes Anderson only makes movies about white people! The monster!" 2018 "Wes Anderson made a movie about non-white people! The monster!"

So I borrowed The People vs. Larry Flynt a while back, largely because I pass by various Hustler-related buildings on a pretty regular basis and I checked out Ebert’s glowing review. Knowing Ebert, I read between the lines and saw that he gave the film a glowing review for some percentage of the three reasons:
1. It’s actually good 2. It has lots of boobs 3. It’s a classic Hollywood liberal film
And, to my surprise, I think the percentage was something like 32%-3%-65% (really surprisingly non-booby for a film about seventies sleaze). That said it’s not bad at all—it’s just what I’d call a very “meat-and-potatoes Hollywood” movie that had an extra punch for Ebert because it was so exactly his politics. But I have to admit as propaganda it was pretty of successful and I have a little “That’s our Flynt!” thing go off in my head whenever I see his name pop up in the local news, which is usually for some political cause.

Ok A Quiet Place isn’t home invasion, right? Cause it looks fucking awesome, but home invasion gives me massive panic attacks.

I'm watching Boogie Nights now, and as always, the performance that really bowls me over is John C. Reilly, who miraculously manages to portray being on the exact same intellectual wavelength as Mark Wahlberg.

Upon re-watching the first two Stepfather films recently, it struck me as really unfortunate that the producers of the remake didn't cast Will Forte to take the reigns from Terry O'Quinn.

Rewatching The Avengers (because Infinity War is coming and I'm so hyped). One thing that really struck me this watch was its use of The Real Heroes (warning: TV Tropes link) during the invasion of New York. Yeah, Hulk punches a giant flying monster and Thor has a magic hammer and Hawkeye is... shooting his arrows, but the film also makes sure to note that cops are setting barricades with their patrol cars and shooting at alien invaders with their handguns, and firefighters are rescuing people from buildings and giving first aid. Midway through the battle the National Guard shows up and starts firing at aliens with a giant mounted gun. Just a really awesome depiction of the everyday people that also run headfirst into incredible danger when shit's going down.

New trailer for Venom looks a lot more interesting than the first (boring) teaser did:
I still think a standalone Venom movie totally separate from both Spider-Man and the MCU is an ill-advised idea, but maybe they can work that out later.

I don't call him C.+. Dowd for nothing!

Damn, I just posted many similar thoughts in the actual Infinity War thread. I'm with Dowd on this one. Though, I'm not really a comic book movie fan. I've now seen 4 other MCU movies prior to this one. I only liked 2/4. My friends had to really nag me into seeing this one. Dowd is definitely right that Black Panther and Thor:Ragnarok are better films. I'd give those films B+ ratings. So yeah, C+ sounds about right. I'd maybe even go to a C. One comment of his, however, I am going to take to the Infinity War spoiler thread, because I have something to say about it.

I woke up this morning and realized that the 1984 "Starman" movie is pretty much Peter Quill's origin story as remembered by his mom (before...you know). It had to be an inspiration in creating Quill's character.
It's a really good movie, too, by the way, although now that I have this idea stuck in my head, and knowing the revelations of GOTG 2, I don't know how uncomfortable it would be to re-watch.

The first time I noticed him was when he gave that same score to Iron Man 3. I like that movie quite a bit, so I feel good about this.

I think the best spider man suit in film is the amazing spider man suits. I think the embelm on the MCU spider man is too small, same with the eyes.

Reading the latest Age of Heroes at TOC made me realize that I'm not sure if I know the difference between Judge Dredd and Demolition Man in the pantheon of Stallone movies. I'm also not sure I want to figure it out...

I didn't know the difference between Survivor and Lost until I watched Lost after it ran. Perhaps in the end they were not so different. Throw a bunch a characters together and let them work it out.
