There's so little drawn from the actual movie here. I absolutely believe this could have been written without seeing either version. This could be cobbled from trailers, a press release about the English dub, and spot-checking a couple other reviews.
Boy, that all seems like something ChatGPT could do with ease...

I almost forgot the followup - it's been resurrected. Paste Magazine bought it. Hooray!

Boy, that all seems like something ChatGPT could do with ease... Yeah, it definitely has that ChatGPT quality of zeroing in on something that doesn't matter, because it's not alive and it doesn't know what it's saying.

And still fighting with people with the comments section, that Hassenger kid never did say no to a tussle.

Scroll down to find my comment "Finally something I can agree with Hassenger on." And I agree with other comments on this one, it's well-written and thought-out.

They posted a list of "the best new year's eve movies" and didn't include The Poseidon Adventure. Travesty!

Yeah, that just isn't what the AV Club is supposed to be in any way. This is basically what Entertainment Weekly turned into, which is why I stopped even going to that site. Casting updates and news like that is what Deadline, Variety and the Hollywood Reporter are for.
Edited: Like, seriously, why didn't they just buy one of the zillion already trashy pop culture sites if this is what they wanted??

wrt the AVC Adam Elkus recently posted a thread on the death of criticism on Bluesky (mentioning the AVC but sparked by the demise of Pitchfork)โhere it is in tidied/up/un-threaded form: Pitchfork dying is being talked about mostly in terms of the death of online media but i think its best talked about with respect to the idea of criticism writ large. If you want to see discussion of movies, tv, books, games, etc what do you actually want? 1) consumer reports-style capsules (what is it, is it worth my money?) 2) a replacement for the cool older guy you knew in HS that somehow knew about cool stuff you didn't 3) joining in a collective hype trend about something you're passionate about 4) a subjective, graded quality assessment 5) someone that talks for hours about a minor interesting detail of a thing you know superficially about 6) inside information/gossip about the people/processes/politics behind something you consume 7) being told you're a good person for liking something, or at minimum being validated for it 8) a jovial (or cranky!) person you look forward to seeing every week talking about something they read/watched/played 9) discovery -- there's too much stuff out there and I only have so much time/money/etc. 10) info what you need to pretend to like in order to get laid or otherwise impress 11) you're a stone cold player hater and you want to see someone absolutely trash shit for the fun of it 12) a monologue (or rant) that might be enlightening but only indirectly at best has to do with the thing in question 13) to save democracy, america, or civilization by liking or not liking 14) you're not actually here for the reviews, you want a place to meet other people who like similar things 15) to gain cool points by your proximity to something cool, even if you don't get what it means 16) you're an industry pro and you want to see what other industry pros think 17) you're bored and need something to take up space, it doesn't matter if its a review or not 18) you miss being in college/graduate school/etc and reading reviews of things you associate with it continues that 19) you're a fan of a public intellectual 20) or a youtuber Many of these things are variations of each other, but they are all meaningfully separate. I left out something in particular on purpose. Many criticsโgood ones, anywayโtend to be evangelists about games, movies, whatever art they're interested in. They want to write about it because they care deeply about the medium and the best it has to offer. A smaller number of critics engage because they want to be able to make grander arguments about art, taste, culture, and politics (for example Sontag on camp, etc). The vehicle they have to do either (or both) is usually a thousand words at most devoted to some particular artifact, so the thing I left out is 21) watch a writer struggle between the article they want to write and the assignment they actually have. There's never really been a harmonious balance between these 21 (not even a remotely exhaustive list) potential audience interests, and many of them conflict with each other. Having a dedicated periodical devoted to media criticism (or even a big vertical like Onion AV Club) is a gamble that you've found a formula that balances audience preferences enough to stay in business. Casinos are very cruel places, and much of the effect of contemporary media trends is to make this really much more of a casino than anything else. [in response to a reply about book criticism along the lines of NYRD/LRB/LARB/TLS] I am not sure about the funding models behind all of these but one interesting wrinkle of NYRB is that its simultaneously a review of books, a publisher of books, and (via Silverberg found), a grant-bestowing entity. That's a rather fascinating hybrid structure that goes well beyond the platitude of "creating a community."

I still take a quick look at TOC most days, and a week or two ago, I actually commented on something. Today I noticed that my kinja profile pic was gone, and it now says I have no posts. I checked my account profile, and it is basically blank. I think it used to be linked to my twitter (which I haven't checked in years) but now it just shows connections to facebook or google for logins. Maybe this is it, and my old account is gone forever. I can't decide if it's worth trying to get back into my account or not. Makes me sad, it does. I still miss the Good Old Days.

Deadspin writer Julie DiCaro (who started there after Defector started) broke the news that Deadspin has been sold to a European startup and the entire staff was laid off. I know it was a shell of its original self anyway, but now it's REALLY dead.

Word on the street is that the AV Club and The Takeout have both been sold, to different companies (Paste and Static), and that The Onion is up next.

More info here: www.adweek.com/media/go-media-sells-av-club-the-takeout/AV Club is going to the same publisher as Jezebel, so it may live on in some form. The Takeout, hard to say, but its new owner is a food media company (they own Chowhound). And The Onion is officially up for sale.

While not everybody's favourite, Sam Barsanti's been laid off. I genuinely, honestly, did not mind Sam Barsanti's writing when he wasn't trying to do a bad Sean O'Neal impression. Unfortunately newswires were all he was doing by the end there. Still, that sucks for him and I wish him well in his future endeavors.

I've wondered the same thing each time I was working for a company that got bought. The buying company would have been better off putting the money into US Treasuries. And that's not me speaking from some hindsight. I looked at the amount they paid, the amount of cash the company was generating, and I wondered the reason at the time. I did understand why the owners of the original company sold, though.

Does this mess with the old Disqus comments too? I was using the Disqus page to occasionally read the Law and Order script people wrote in a comments section whenever I need a good chuckle.

I realize my relationship with Nu-AV Club wasn't particularly health, but man, I'm gonna miss dunking on crummy writing. Like how this author is apparently excited to read about male directors being made to feel uncomfortable and exploited by their actresses.
