'm wondering in your opinion what the biggest NEVER FORGET mistakes/blunders/ill conceived judgments are, over at the AVC.

The Neko Case album review from 2 years ago. Since their search function also seems to've turned to shit, I can't link to it. It was dreadful in every way, but mainly for calling Neko out for not interfering with the subject matter of Nearly Midnight, Honolulu.

"Great Job, Internet"? It seems like the antithesis of whatever virtue the site has as a whole.

I think the recent Salman Rushdie review has to be up there. Note: if you can’t make it through “wordy” books and know absolutely nothing about the broader Muslim world, perhaps you should not be reviewing Salman Rushdie. It actually made me want to read it to spite the reviewer, plus I think Ibn Rushd (not just a pun, but also a famous philosopher!) was pretty cool. Jellybeans wasn’t a great moment in Nabin’s career, but it was such a funny mistake I have a hard time holding it against him. I voted for Castro. I’d actually nominate Eakin’s “ Nico wasn’t the sharpest tack in the musical box or whatever” (yes, she wrote the “whatever”) as pretty damn awful. This coming from the site’s music editor is pretty ridiculous—disliking Nico is one thing, but I think she’s too important to dismiss. “Dr. Hibbert's Critical Condition” also deserves an honorable mention.

It’s usually pretty interesting to tell which ones are good or not—the Ma Bell logo redesign by Saul Bass—obviously cool. Some tumblr mixed quotation thing or mash-up—not. It’s easy to ignore, like I do with most TV show reviews, a fair amount of newswire, &c.

The Eakin line about Nico was the first thing I thought of. Ms. "If You Criticize Taylor Swift, You're Anti-Feminist" thinks it's OK to casually blow off another female artist's two-decade career. Marah has had some really egregious writing over the years. Her review of M.I.A.'s Matangi contains this ham-fisted chestnut: It’s not that M.I.A., a musician, should have to solve the problems of the world. No one expects her to do that. What is expected, though, is that the rapper produce a thoughtful, cohesive dissertation on her beliefs, and to date, she hasn’t really done that.
What? If you want a dissertation, read a goddamn dissertation.

Her review of M.I.A.'s Matangi contains this ham-fisted chestnut: Marah's probably the Old Country writer with which I have the biggest love-hate relationship. She's rarely boring, she often makes really good points (and writes really good pieces, thinking especially of her essay on Sesame Street), but she just as often seems to embody everything I can't stand about a lot of modern-day pop-cultural attitudes (makes sense she'd be the main Hatesong interviewer). I don't want to know about the Castro thing (okay, yes, I do). Co-signing JLL's mention of the Rushdie review. WTF indeed.

About the Rushdie review. Why does he think Ibn Rushd is a pun? What is the pun there? Is it because Rushdie?

The music review of Lana Del Rey's album where the reviewer basically spent more time talking about how her album sucks because she positions herself as whatever contrived indie-pop gun moll/blow-up doll instead of, I don't know, actually critiquing if the album worked or not despite Del Rey's persona.

The comments are doing a good job pointing out how boneheaded the review is. Also, this: "The jinn or jinni are 'creatures made of smokeless fire'—which is Rushdie’s way of using flashy rhetoric to overcome the lack of mythology built into the story" Like, this is literally the definition of jinni in Islam.

She was interviewing some neo communist musician about why he loves Fidel Castro so much. She says to him 'Yeah, but he's dead." or something almost as confident. He instantly agreed with her which was pretty funny. I always forget the guy's name, I'll have to see if I can track it down. The weird part is she seems to have done some homework on the topic, yet is completely wrong on such an easily verifiable fact. Maybe she'd just finished using Leonard Pierce's time machine. About the Rushdie review. Why does he think Ibn Rushd is a pun? What is the pun there? Is it because Rushdie? I'm guessing he thinks the name is "funny" because "I been rushed" kinda like Anita Cock, etc. etc. Too bad its an actual guy's name.

EDIT: Here it is: www.avclub.com/article/indie-rock-statesman-ian-svenonius-why-he-loves-fi-203930I remember that comments section, and find myself in it, 'defending' Marah - since Castro is referred to in the present tense, I thought some kind of editing fuck up had happened, and the 'he did die' line was meant to refer to someone else. I won't defend this very hard, though.
