Teti replacing O'Neal as Editor-In-Chief, which is apparently a thing that just happened.
Expecting a bunch of Good Sports, Internet! posts and an even greater drop in Newswire quality.

O'Neal was never EIC, just senior editor, the same position Teti had until this promotion. Modell is still largely in charge of the publication and has been since Phipps left/was convinced to leave.

I was going to say, if O'Neal was EIC, there would have been a lot more snark.
If this means Teti's mom joins the writing staff, I think we can all agree it will be a big win.

No one gonna say Disqus? I've now commented over here probably more than I had in the fiveish years I was registered at the AVC so it's not like the mechanics were upsetting or anything, but it sure seems like the nature of Disqus as a platform allowed for the influx of of trolls/misogynists that otherwise never would've found that place. The Breaking Bad and Walking Dead reviews probably led to some of that as well.

Yup, to me this is pretty cool news. Then again, I like Teti. And no one has to read sports stuff on the AV Club if they don't want to (I don't), but it certainly has a place there and many people enjoy articles about it.

Yeah I'm very non-sports-ie, but I'll skim a Teti article to find anything insightful. (like the discussion on the worst team uniforms)

I know this is the complete antithesis of why Great Job, Internet even exists, but it would be a great feature if they did it once a week. Every Friday, post the best 10-15 links of the week with a little blurb. Like Videocracy. Or just bring back Videocracy, I loved that feature.

Apparently all Teti is known for is sports stuff? Cause he writes one article a week on the nfl and does articles for the big global events?... He's easily one of the site's best writers who always does a variety of things. Hell even if you concentrate on the sports stuff its always written in a way even people there who don't like sports enjoy them

Don't like his reviews of non-sports stuff ( hated his game reviews - in an area including the likes of Jim Rossignol and Leigh Alexander, he's a third-rater at best), and I'll never forgive him for the If You Don't Watch NFL, You're An Asshole article. He might do a good job, but I'm not predisposed. At all.

He writes insightful articles and reviews, even when I don't always agree with him. I think he'll make a great EIC! Also, he's charming and a snappy dresser.

I like his reviews (though no, I don't always agree with him) but I think his overall vibe is good news for the site, certainly vs. some of the other potential candidates or someone from the outside. I'm not sure how you're extrapolating that to a drop in newswire quality either Lupin but shrug.

Teti's Six Feet Under recaps were easily some of the best writing the site ever saw. I'm happy for him, though I don't see his promotion really affecting the current issues the site is facing.
I already mentioned this in the AVC heresies thread, but I was never a huge fan of Sean O'Neal. I think it's incredibly appropriate that he's leaving to run a celebrity gossip site, even if it is a slightly snarkier than usual celeb gossip site. The problem is now they have a lot of newswire writers who are blatantly trying to copy his style. I still maintain that Katie Rife is by far the best of their writers right now.

I like Teti, even though he's kind of a try-hard when it comes to video game writing and his idiosyncrasies are often too precious by half (we get it, John, you like 70s game shows). He's the kind of guy I like to see succeeding though. I really like Block & Tackle. Watching sports stresses me out but I still like to be conversant in them, and I like that it has snark but isn't mired in cynicism.
For me Pierce is the biggest blunder. My memories of it are kind of fuzzy, but I recall getting the impression that it really hurt Keith to have to pull the trigger on that one. Not to say firing him was too harshāI think it was in line with the deed. It just kills me not just that a dude that intelligent succumbed to the temptation to do something sneaky like that, but that he ended up paying for it the rest of his life and counting. I still regularly read his blog. He hasn't lost a step. While I understand that he is where he is by his own hand, it's still a shame that a guy that talented will never have anything resembling real reach as far as an audience.

I don't understand this line of argument. If John Teti really really likes 70s game shows, what's wrong with that? If it's coming from a sincerely meant, honest place of "that's just what he loves," why should we criticize it as being "too precious"? I'm really sensitive to stuff like this because a lot of what I really love is not cool. Not the "comic book movie" kind of not cool that actually is incredibly socially embraced, but stuff that is genuinely not cool. And are you gonna come along and judge me for being too precious, or too snooty, or too hipster, or too whatever, just because I like the stuff I like? Sorry to take it so personally. You didn't really ask for an argument over this.

You're right. I'm probably not in a position to judge uncool subcultures. I like jam bands, for God's sake. I wouldn't begrudge you or most people their hobbies and interests. Sorry to have touched a nerve. It's a feeling I have specifically about Teti that I haven't entirely worked through.

This is actually a blunder made by the commentariat, but:
The comment section for the recent Rick Moranis article. Isn't it funny how his career died after he chose to put family ahead of his career because his wife died of cancer? HAHAHAHAhahahahaā¦

A good EIC doesn't need to be a good writer. A good EIC needs to have a clear vision and understanding of the (site)'s voice, an ability to manage a range of personalities in a collaborative environment, and be able to balance creative and business demands.

The place would be a poorer place without all those classic reviews (which will be ending soon, IIRC), weird dives into TV history, DVD reviews of forgotten arthouse films, and Frankoās WOT reviews.

I know it's been said time and again how bad "Great Job, Internet!" usually is, but today I was struck by just how much it has taken over the site. Some days, depending on when you load the site, it can appear that the majority of the content is just brain-dead GJ,I posts.
Between the proliferation and general badness of that feature, the increasingly thin/uninteresting to me music coverage and my declining interest in Undercover lately, I'm finding I'll just not read the site for several days in a row sometimes.

Making the side-bar and ads take up almost 50% of the fucking page.
